Hi,

My 13 year old daughter got in trouble today for wearing a hat in class. She is a very fashionable young lady and had a black crocheted berret (she calls it a beanie) on in class. She has been wearing them off and on for two years now and has never had a problem. A boy complained to the principal that she was allowed to wear her hat and he was not allowed to wear his baseball cap. Apparently they looked it up in the code of conduct and it does state that no hats are allowed in class, she was called to the principal's office and asked to remove her hat. She did and stored it in her locker for the day, without a fuss. The boy who brought it to the principals attention razzed her about it all day and she was quite upset when she got home.

I was always taught, and have taught my children, that it is rude for a man to wear a hat indoors but proper for a lady to do so. I know there is a lot of history around why this is so, but for simplicty, I will say it has to do with respect. I'm back in college and I know that no one is allowed to wear baseball caps for tests as answers can be written along the brim. Otherwise ladies are allowed to wear hats or scarves as a fashion accessory. I think this is acceptable. To me there is a big difference between a small hat perched on the back of ones head and a large hat with a brim that covers part of ones face.

As it is school code she will not be wearing her hats in class anymore. Just wondering what other people thing about this issue. Am I being old fashion by thinking and teaching my children it is okay for ladies but not men to wear hats indoors?

It's perfectly acceptable for a woman to wear a hat indoors....provided there is no stated dress code. ;)

There are no hats or scarves allowed in the schools for boys or girls. In fact when my godson had cancer we had to go to the school and fight that he be allowed to wear a hat on his bald head! I do think its fair though if boys can't wear hats then neither can girls!

My son's school requires boys to tuck their shirts in and to wear belts. :confused3 (Not girls)

It's school policy.

Our school district doesn't allow hats or hoods inside any school building. Oh, and yes I do think you're very old fashioned. The thinking of ladies wearing hats inside went out during my childhood in the late 60's early 70's.

That's fair. Students should not be allowed to wear hats to school in this day and age unless it is a special occasion (e.g. "funny hat day", "college day", that particular school's official hats perhaps on special days, local professional team hats on special days like for the World Series or Superbowl).

And it would be totally unfair for the girls to be able to if the boys can't. The school acted appropriately by asking your daughter not to wear her hat.

No one could wear hats in school while I was in H.S. If the boys can't the girls shouldn't be able to either. To use outdated dress standards as justification for a modern double standard is both sad and pathetic. You can't pick and choose which outdated gender rules are to be scrapped and which are to be upheld.

There were days you could pay a $1 to wear a hat and it went to charity but it was usually the last Friday before finals for each semester or while a Cleveland team was in the playoffs. That last part didn't happen too often obviously.

Really? Why? (Or is that what that :confused3 is for? lol) Seems a little dorky. Is it a school uniform school? Private school? My DS lives in soccer shirts and polo shirts; I'm picturing how silly they'd look tucked in, and into belted pants.

::yes::

I teach in a MS and both boys and girls are not permitted to wear hats. It is part of our dress code.

I'd love someone to tell the older ladies at my church that they can't wear hats anymore to the service... I commented earlier, but to expand, I think it's perfectly fine for ladies to wear hats indoors, just not baseball caps. And it kills me when men are still wearing their hats at the dinner table. I want to walk over and slap them off their head.

No hats were part of our dress code in M.S. and H.S. (96-02), and probably in grade school as well.

Now at one public high school I went to, it was rules that there were no shorts allowed, however, girls could wear skirts. The usual fingertip rule applied. I always wore pants anyways because the classrooms were cold, but I never really looked over the dress code book to begin with.

Dress code books have to be so specific these days because it seems a teenager can not properly dress themselves. This was the case 10 years ago too. No one else wants to know how far below a guy's butt his pants can hang or what kind of underwear he's wearing. Girls do not need to showing off every bit of skin possible, it's not the beach or pool.

Religion is about the only excuse some one is allowed to use for bending the rules. But most religions are more properly dressed to begin with, and require more decency.

DD's school no one wears hats unless it's funny hat day-which you have to pay 1.00 to participate.

Even parents coming into the school cannot wear hats-except there are a couple parents who have taken chemo/radiation, but besides that it is to lead by example.

Kids can also not have holes in their clothes, whether it be bought with holes in the clothes-jeans, or worn down to holes, kids will get ISS.

In our school district hats all hats have to come off as they walk in the door and this includes winter hats. so as the kids even in elementary come in in the morning they all reach up and pull their hats off.

so if girls are allowed to wear knit hats should the boys be allowed? because a lot of guys wear the knit skull type hats all the time? It is much easier to just say no hats except for religious reasons.

My DD14 is not allowed to wear a hat, neither is my DD11. I have no problem with it except DD14 LOVES hats....she just takes her with her and wears it after school.

I'm in high school and all students in my school can wear hats. In middle school we weren't allowed to though.

Where I went to school they occasionally did the same thing with a hat or blue jeans ( I went to a catholic hs ) and it also went to charity. And you are so correct with the playoff thing. It has not happened very often in my 47 years.
