Beth, I have done the train across the states a couple of times. The first time departed from Sacramento up to Chicago to New York. The second time started out in Seattle, all along the northern states to Chicago, on to Boston. Both trips beautiful. Loved the observation car. Have also done the train to San Fran, San Diego many times. As you can tell, I actually like taking the train.

Be sure to bring cards, yatzee, books, or any other project. We did do the sleeper cars, but i was able to share the cost with my sisters and mom. Anywhos, i would bring pillows and small blankets. Wear light weight clothes that are comfortable and stretchy that can go from day to night, good for sleeping in. Take some Tylenol PMs to help you sleep. Or something stronger if you have it. LOL! Oh and bring along the most food that you can handle. bread, peanut butter and jam, fruit, snacks, water, and so forth. If you are a tea drinker, bring your own, to add to their hot water. Hand sanitizer and wipes would be good to have.
It would be nice to have all of your personal items in small separate bags, along with hand towels for each family member. Baggies might be nice to have also.
Some day, I would like to take the southern most route to New Orleans and WDW. I think it's called the Texas Eagle. I would like to do it in memory of my Mom and sister. We had such fun on our trips on the train.
AnywYs, hope this helps a bit.
Happy Birthday to Hannah and Lindsey too!
