Hello everyone!

The Studio Tour was awesome! We had the best time and saw so many things that I did not expect to see. I was only able to bring one guest with my D23 membership so I took Bob’s 12 yo son who is a Disney fanatic. Bob was very understanding and so sweet to drive us down and then find a Starbucks to hang out and wait the 2 hours for us. After the tour we just had to go to Disneyland and how convenient that we had our AP’s with us! Soooo we went for the afternoon and watched the Electrical Parade and came home. It was a great day!! Sorry this is long but I want to share with you my Studio Tour experience.

On with the tour: (I was able to take some pictures but we were not allowed to take any pictures inside the buildings other than the Archive building.) I've posted more pictures on my Facebook profile.

We first went to the display room of the archives and Dave Smith the Disney Archivist himself spoke to us! He showed us Walt's parents marriage certificate and the interesting thing is they got married in a place called Kissimet (not sure how to spell it)...not Kissimmee Florida about 30 miles from Orlando, we saw an invitation only opening day ticket and on the back of the ticket there was a map of how to get to DL, that first day parking pass, the antique bird in a cage that inspired Walt to create Animatronics, and we got to hold one of the Oscars and have our picture taken with it. The room was lined with glass cases that had so many things but one thing that stood out was the snow globe from Mary Poppins and Walt’s Passport from when he joined the Red Cross and went to France during the war. They also had the original closet from Narnia. There was so much to see and take in that it was a bit overwhelming because I wanted to remember everything which of course I cannot!

We then walked around the back lot and saw the outside of the soundstage that TV series Brothers and Sisters is filmed. It looked like a normal 4 story building to me. We were able to go into one soundstage which was the one they used to film 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. This looked like a giant warehouse and the huge pool is still there under the floor but empty of water. We were not able to take pictures of that soundstage. If anyone watches the TV series ‘Alias’ they film all over the Studio grounds. I have never watched it but I plan to now! Our tour guide told us that they built several rides for DL here; the animals for the Jungle Cruise, the shell of the River Belle at the Studios because at the time there was nothing in Anaheim that could accommodate what they wanted to build. She also said that often Walt would be riding around the backstage area in a stage coach supervising the construction.

Next we went into one of the original buildings that they had moved from the studio that was located on Hyperion to the current location in Burbank. They moved a total of 4 buildings and she was not sure if they moved them instead of building new because of cost or sentimental value but from what I’ve read about Walt I would think it was because it was cheaper to move the buildings than build new ones! (Note: I did my college English paper on Walt so I read a lot and probably know more than anyone should or really wants to know! I got an A+ on that paper…the only A+ I received my entire college career!) Ok, back to the tour…The building was actually two buildings that they put together to make one building. One side of the building was where they created and worked on Snow White and the other side was where they created and worked on Silly Symphonies.

We then walked down a tree lined street that really looked more like a residential area rather than a work place! We saw the buildings where they created the cells, paint, (all of the painters of the cells were women, not men) post production, and production.

Next we were taken to the tunnels. No pictures were allowed. Walt did not want employees to have to walk in inclement weather (he didn’t want work to stop because the employees could not take cells out in the rain) so he designed tunnels that connected the buildings. Our tour guide told us a story about just how much Walt wanted to keep the employees working; he hired errand runners to get coffee for the employees and a cup of coffee would cost 5 cents if delivered to their desks but if the employee chose to go to the commissary instead to get their coffee it would cost them 10 cents.

Then it was off to the Animation building! This was where Walt actually worked so exciting and to be able to walk down halls that I know he walked down...well they've probably updated the carpeting but still it was exciting! No pictures allowed inside. We didn’t get to go into Walt’s office but we did see the window! I would have loved to have gotten to go into his office! He actually had two offices; one was a working office the other was where he would meet with VIP’s. There is a piano in the fancy office and the musicians would try out music scores for Walt there. His favorite song was ‘Feed the Birds’ from Mary Poppins and when someone was there who could play the piano he would always ask them to play it for him and he didn’t even have to tell them what song, he would simply ask them to play the song, and they knew which song to play. Another interesting story about the Animation Building was that there was a restaurant, a fitness center and a barber on the top floor. Men only were allowed in that area. There was also an outdoor area which was made for sunbathing, clothing optional! In the Animation Building we saw the hall where all of the great animators had offices which they called the ‘Hall of Kings’. We also saw jars of original paint that was used in the time that Walt was alive and working on the animated movies. They are sending some of this paint to the new Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.

We were then taken to the Legends Garden where they had replicas of the Partners statue as well as the Roy and Minnie statue that is in WDW only. It was fun because we could actually stand right next to the Partners statue and take pictures…no flower planters to get in the way. In the Legends Garden they had plaques on the wall with recipients of the Legends award (started by Eisner). Some of the plaques had hand prints of the recipients.

We were then given a souvenir security patch and were allowed to shop in their store and their employee store. That was fun! I bought a Tinker Bell jacket from the employee store and a watch in the other store and a cute Studio only satchel.

I feel so fortunate to have been able to go on this tour and it was incredible. Our tour guide told us that only VIP’s get to tour the Studios so I am totally thrilled that I joined D23 and had this opportunity was able to take advantage of this event. I was sad when our two hours was over!

Vicki--thanks for the trip report--what a great opportunity you had! LOL about you getting the A+ on your paper -- it makes a difference when we're passionate about what we're writing about, doesn't it! (Oh, and LOL about the sunbathing area--:scared1:)

Exactly! You couldn't pay me enough to sunbathe nude with my coworkers. :scared1:

Hi everyone! :flower3:

Hi everyone! :flower3:

Hi Heather! Well, I just assumed that the sunbathing area was "men only" too--but still, just weird--why would you want to sit around naked with a bunch of people you work with? Maybe it's one of those male bonding things I don't understand?

BTW--I'm getting ready to PM you so look for it!

Cheryl

Afternoon! Thanks Tina for the well wishes. I just got a call from the new doc and they are going to get me in on wed. The bad news is I have to do another flush out deal before I go. :( I am NOT looking forward to THAT! I am afraid it is going to make my problem even worse because "going" a lot can really iratate things and I am JUST starting to feel a little bit better. UGH! Plus considering NO pain meds seem to help it. I know he needs to examine me but I wish I didn't have to do that to do it. I am nervous now about it making things worse! Oh well it needs to get done. I am just glad they fit me in!

Anyway Vicki your tour sounded awesome!! Glad you had fun!

Hi everyone!
I just finished my chores:
- 2 loads of laundry to fold
- vacuum, dust, and mop den
- clean the bathroom
- clean my room

I'm getting ready now to head out with my pops to Best Buy. I'm finally getting my own computer! :thumbsup2

I better go push him into the shower because he is taking way too long on the computer.
Prayers for my dad, please. He's off his thyroid medication because it's been 1 year since his surgery and they need to make sure the cancer didn't come back. He went through radiation after they took out the thyroid but it's always better to be safe than sorry. He's kinda grumpy because he feels sick and doesn't have much energy.

Vicki--Your tour sounds fantastic!!!

Chery and Heather--You two are killing me with the nude sunbathing!

Kelly--I'm glad you're getting into the doc.

Cristabel--Yay for your new computer, and I hope your dad is a-ok!!!

Hi! I hope you all had nice weekends. We helped our friends pack their house on Saturday and we watched their kids (8 hours with 6 kids....:headache:)while they cleaned it up on Sunday. So they left this morning for Ohio :sad2:

Today was the first day of school for the girls. They both were excited to start again. The only thing I hate is that the school released a list of supplies by grade, but when the girls came home they had specific lists from their teachers. :headache: Those lists only had quite a few things that weren't on the school's list. So we had to go shopping to get the rest of the necessities.

Hello Divas!!!!

I am in the mood to get some planning done!

So what should the group work on planning???

Also whatever we plan for on 25 Feb 09 will have to have the Priority Seating calls made on Christmas so we may want to plan accordingly. I have no problem calling on Christmas. Unless we're confident that if we call a day or two later we'll still be good for making the PS.

Another drive by hello from me!

I hope that they get this thing figured out and that you start to feel better soon Kelly!:grouphug:

Steph, good thinking on the 2/25 planning!

Cristobel, best wishes for your dad.

Wow--quiet day today among the Divas!

Donna: just have to tell you--Bella LOVES  her armadillo--she plays with it all the time.
.

I'm so happy to hear that! I thought if I were a dog, that's what I'd want to play with. ;)

I love Depeche Mode! I saw them in the late 80s andI wanted to seethem when they were in town this month, but am saving every penny for my Disney obsession. I hope you get to see them.

You would have loved this concert. They were in great form. I noticed the road crew were all holding their breath during the first number, but after that (seeing the lead singer was doing fine), they relaxed. Great energy, wonderful show.

Yes, "Aunt Donna" bought it for her!

:)
Good morning ladies!!

Kelly, I'm so sorry for all you are dealing with now. Being in constant pain just takes so much out of you. I hope they are able to do something for you soon.

I'm feeling very lazy this morning. School starts one week from today! I cannot believe how fast the summer flew by.
)

Beth, does your life get a little easier once the kids are back in school?

Hi everyone. Like Beth, I pretty much spent the whole weekend cleaning house. Though I did do a couple other things:
  • I was on the computer for a short time to print out pics for some of the frames I found while cleaning house. They are now hung on my walls. :)
  • I finished the shadow boxes for my DH's boutineer (from 2007 wedding), our 50th golden ears, and our dream ears. (will try to get around to posting pics once my DH hangs them
  • Went to Costco and walked out with a $400 bill!!! :scared: Granted that is basically dinners for the rest of August & all of Sept, but still!

Hope everyone has a good week!

Wow, Ker, that is a huge Costco bill just for food! It adds up fast there. I am such a sucker for the tastings. Last time they were offering turkey burger samples. Bought those.

Exactly! You couldn't pay me enough to sunbathe nude with my coworkers. :scared1:
:
:lmao::rotfl2:

I have been in those buildings and never heard that story before. How odd.

I'm thinking we need to plan a group viewing of the Billys!

Sounds good to me!

Just got back from seeing District 9. A little too much camera motion for me...

Anything really. I am just in the planning mood today. What about rides we said we wanted to try to do as a group?......

Well, remember there might be rides DURING the scavenger hunt . . . .

I so want to figure out something to do with my ears. I have my first set from when I was 16, my 50th ears, my dream ears, my pirate ears, and a few others assorted. And I'm feelin a new pair comin on too! Shadow boxes sound cool, and can't wait to see yours.

Hi Heather! Well, I just assumed that the sunbathing area was "men only" too--but still, just weird--why would you want to sit around naked with a bunch of people you work with? Maybe it's one of those male bonding things I don't understand?

Cheryl

Okay, saw something later in the posts referencing Cheryl and Heather nude sunbathing, and I had to go read back through the posts. Way different than what I was picturing!:lmao::lmao:

She has a toy armadillo, how cute!
I'm lazy smurf too!

When I get stuffed critters for my pup, I have to remove the stuffing. Then she is happy. So at my house we would have road kill armadillo!

I really liked the Smurfs, but it was seriously a wierd show.

Can't believe how fast the summer has flown by. My sister just mentioned perhaps Christmas at Disney to help her boy not be too sad his first Christmas without his Dad. (We secretly have a trip in the works already). Spoke with my hubby and probably our trip will turn into an extended family trip. It is hard because although I love my sister to death, she is polar opposite to me and is a little stressful to be around sometimes for my hubby, but he will buck up and it will be fun.
