Girls Only Disneyland Trip!! Old thread. New link in first post

Hi everyone.

I got a little ticked off yesterday because of something that happened to Ryan at school. (Ryan is my nine year old who falls somewhere on the spectrum. He's the sweetest boy, shy, quiet, no behavioral problems. His biggest hurdle is his language comprehension, and because of this, he seems very simple minded compared to his same age peers. I hate to say it, but a really good example would be Forrest Gump......Ryan is pretty much just like Forrest Gump.)

Anyway, Ryan has been telling us about some mean girls at school who tell him to shut up, or get away from them, or they hide his shoes, or whatever. I just figured most of it was typical kid stuff......mean girl stuff......because lets face it, girls can be mean. And Ryan is an easy target.

Yesterday he came home with a dollar. We asked him where he got the dollar, and he told us that one of the "nice" girls in his class gave it to him in the cafeteria......she told him that she would pay him a dollar if he would go away and sit somewhere else. He took the dollar, told her thank you (because he doesn't realize that she's being mean; he thinks she's being nice by giving him a dollar) and then moved down the bench away from her.

I just think that's so mean! It was shocking for me that a little girl in the third grade would do something like that......you don't like a kid because he's "dumb", so you pay him a dollar so he won't sit close to you in the cafeteria?!

His class has to sit together at the same table in the cafeteria. They can sit next to whoever they want to within their class, but they have to all stay together as a class. He can't move that far away for crying out loud! Poor guy.....he doesn't have any friends in his class because he's "slow", but unfortunately for his classmates, some unlucky soul is going to end up sitting next to him during lunch time.

I sent his teacher an email about it. I don't know what can be done, but jeesh, it still breaks my heart.:sad1: :sad2:

That is really sad. I am so sorry to hear about this. This sounds like something the kids in the class I work in would do to another kid. A bunch of bullies. The school NEEDS to intervene.

Well, I called this morning and it turns out that the Pacific Wharf Cafe will be closed. Boooooooo! :sad2:

So instead I was wondering if anyone was interested in catching the 2:35 Billy Hill Show? :confused3

We could have lunch while watching the show. I've always been sort of curious about the Chili in a Bread Bowl. It's supposed to be good. Or you can also go across to the Mexican restaurant or the Riverbelle Terrace and get something to go and bring it in. We've done that before with no problems.

Anyway, it was only a thought. If anyone who's there on Thursday afternoon and is not doing the Princess lunch is interested, let me know. :)

I am up for just about anything. :thumbsup2

Capri,

My 12 year old niece has a lot of challenges too and even ended up hospitalized for depression and making suicidal remarks at school this past fall.

His 18 month check up and vaccines are scheduled for the Friday after our trip in March, and I am worried about trying to talk to our pediatrician about his (imho) speech delays and his ears as he has had 5 double ear infections in the last year. Our doctor is very laidback, and that is part of why I originally chose her--she is very well educated/trained and is a little older (in her early 50s i would guess), but sometimes I wonder if she is too laidback if you know what I mean! Anyhow, I would love to get some advice from those of you who have gone down this road before--how do you convince someone that only sees your child a few times a year for a few minutes at a time that you think there's a problem?
First of all, that's horrible about your niece. Noelle is the same age and I just can't imagine a 12 year old being so depressed they are already thinking of suicide. :sad1: I truly hope your niece is able to get some help. It sucks kids just can't be kids anymore. The school asks so much more from them, and the other students are meaner then ever.

As for your son, I know exactly what you mean about an older doctor and being too laid back. Someone younger might be more up to date on the programs and options out there and be more willing for early intervention.

With Adam when I noticed his speech delay, I just insisted to his ped that we get a referral to get him tested. I wouldn't leave until I had that. You are the mom, be nice but firm. Then once you are able to have him evaluated, you can talk to the speech therapist about his delays and make sure to mention the ear infections.

Getting early help, and also putting Adam in preschool for two hours a day, four days a week, made all the difference in the world. He actually entered Kindergarten already reading and talking up a storm!
So it will be ok, but you have to keep at it and insist he at least be evaluated. Good luck!

Oo, boas! Another thing to add to my shopping list. :rotfl:
:lmao: I know! My shopping list keeps growing!! And even though I said I wasn't buying anymore tees, I did. I bought a green one to wear on Sunday. :rotfl:

I am up for just about anything. :thumbsup2
I'd heard that about you. :rolleyes1

;)

Lots of times parents want expect the teachers to "fix" the problem.
But these days teachers have so little rights in the classroom and can easily be sued.
There is a big gap in communication between teachers and school administrators and those who set their budgets.

S.A.V.E. is a great group because it empowers children as well as parents.
And opens a dialog between student to student parent to teacher and teacher to administration.

Capri, if you don't hear back from the teacher right away I would be on the horn to the principal right away. This kind of behavior can't be tolerated. Because I was overweight all my life, I was always teased and made the butt of jokes in school. Fortunately, I always had friends and also had the fortitude just to ignore the meanies. I know Ryan is not in the same spot, but it breaks my heart too that he's in this predicament. He has NO friends at school? That shouldn't be happening. The school definitely needs to help out with this situation--it would be a lesson for ALL the kids.

Switching gears, I've already received several contest entries and they are all so cute. I'm sitting here with a smile on my face. Keep em coming!

Ok, so as of now the list for the headbands/tiaras is:

Mickey Tiara

Cheryl
Heather
Wendy
Tina (3)
Callie (2)
January
Theresa
Capri
Michelle
Amy
Linda (2)
Steph
Debra
Amy

"Tasteful" Tiara

Capri
Heather
Debra
Linda
Steph
Amy

The headbands are 99 cents each, the Tiaras are $1.99 each. Initial shipping is $4.99 plus $10 for expedited, plus $1.99 for each piece. (If I'm reading the ad right.) So that would be an additional $51.74 plus $4.99 plus $10.

So I'm going to try to confirm the additional expedited shipping and will charge each person:

cost of the item
plus a pro rata share of the shipping costs (which I estimate based on the above would be about $2.00)

Will let you know when I hear back and put in the order.

Awww thanks everyone for your support!:grouphug:

I guess a lot of us are going through our own struggles with a child who has developmental/learning disabilities. It's tough, there's no doubt about it. It seems like once you get a handle on one problem, another one pops up. Of course, that's just the way life is I guess, no matter who you are and what the circumstances.:goodvibes

I actually really like Ryan's school and his teachers. They are a great group who cares very, very much about his learning. But, I do think they're a bit lax when it comes to teaching their typical learners how to be accepting of those who are different. It's not like I expect the kids to be his friends if they really don't want to. I just want them to be nice.....say hello to him.....or just don't say anything at all......but don't take advantage of him or be mean to him.

I'm sad that Ryan doesn't realize that what happened to him yesterday was mean, and yet at the same time I'm glad because it didn't cause him pain (if you know what I mean).

Heck, part of me (the mean girl part ;) ) wants him to milk the situation for all it's worth......tell him to sit next to that girl everyday and maybe she'll keep giving him dollars. He is afterall saving up to buy a Playstation 3.:rolleyes1

I'm still deciding if I'm going to get an annual pass or not. I'll proably get the 3-day hopper when I get there on Friday evening and maybe upgrade on Saturday. The thing is I think Saturday is a blackout day but I've heard I'll be able to use it on Saturday if that's the day I upgrade. Not sure though...:confused3

Oh no! I've really been looking forward to a broccoli cheese bread bowl! However, you just might be able to twist my arm into seeing the Billys. I was planning on heading over to DCA first, to try to get on to Toy Story with hopefully shorter lines, check out the Miner 49ers, and then Callie and I were talking about seeing one of their later shows. I may have to do some rearranging of the schedule.........................

That's actually not a bad idea. Those games aren't cheap either ya know..... :thumbsup2

(Good for you, keeping your sense of humor! Sometimes that's all we can do. )

There's no deluxe AP blackout days the weekend we're going to be there (if that's the AP you're thinking about getting).:thumbsup2

I'm getting the deluxe AP/$50 gift card deal at Costco. I think it's a great deal.

Thursday afternoon when my mom and i get in..we are going to drop our bags at the hotel and go straight to the park.

Maybe for some loaded baked potato soup on mainstreet. Or those yummy nachos at whitewater snacks.. mmmmmmmmm.. wish i had those now.

Then we are going to explore DCA for a couple of hours before heading back to the hotel.

hhmmm.. i need to buy bags for the totes to go in.

I was looking forward to it too!! I'll have to drown my sorrows in a big bowl of the baked potato soup when we do dinner at CC.

You are welcome to join us for the Billy Show! The more the merrier. :dance3: It's not until 2:35. Depending on what time you are arriving, perhaps you could still do the TSM ride. We can save spots for anyone who's interested. Just let us know. :)

The first day of our trip is up on www.accuweather.com! :cool1: (sorry, I'm one of those who will check the weather DAILY at least once between now and the trip)

So far it's predicting considerable clouds with a High of 60 and a Low of 47.

Not bad. At least it's not rain!!!

Okay, I haven't heard about this. Is there a group riding TSM together on Thursday? What time?:hyper:

I have to activate an AP after I get there, and I'm not sure how long that will take. :confused3

Those of you who were on the trip last year will remember that we have a special Shutterfly account set up just for our use. It's a place where we can all post our personal pictures from the trip for the other ladies to see. (It's just more private then having them ALL on the internet for the entire world to view)

The account is still active. I was just looking at some of the pics from last year. :goodvibes So fun!!!! It's makes it even more exciting!!! :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Anyway, if anyone from last year has lost the account information or if any of the new ladies are interested in seeing the pics from before and adding theirs to the account after this trip, send me a PM and I will happily send you the account info and password. Obviously I cannot post it here or that would defeat the whole purpose of having our own private account. :rotfl:

Two more weeks, two more weeks, two more weeks!! :cool1:

That I don't know. It's a good idea though. I'm not sure what time everyone is arriving.
I know several are doing the Princess lunch at 2:00, Heather/Sarah are eating at Hungry Bear, and January and I are eating lunch and watching the Billy Show at 2:35.
That's about all I know for that day. :rotfl:

I was thinking of getting the SoCal Annual for $174.00. How much is the Costco one?

You would be able to get into DL that day (so you could upgrade) but not sure if they would then let you park-hop. Callie or Stacie--where are you?

Not that I would have had time to eat it, but I LOVE the broccoli soup in a bread bowl! Rats!

Beth, can you PM me the shutterfly info again? Thanks!

I was thinking of getting the SoCal Annual for $174.00. How much is the Costco one?

The Costco one is $269, but you get a $50 Disney gift card with that, so really your out-of-pocket cost is $219 for the deluxe AP.

I'm not sure about the rules regarding the use of a So. Cal AP on a blackout day if you happen buy it on a blackout day.

Ooo, not much more than the $174. I just read this on another site:

Blackout Dates

If you buy a restricted Annual Pass (such as the Southern California Annual Passport, which has many "blackout dates"), but you plan to start your trip on one of the blackout dates, the blackout will not apply on the day you purchase the pass. So if you go to Disneyland on a Saturday and buy an Annual Pass that is normally not valid on Saturdays, you will still be able to use it that day at both parks.

So I could get the 3-day hopper for $149 on Friday and then upgrade to the SoCal pass on Saturday for $25 more and still get in. Or I can get the costco one...decisions, decisions, decisions.

Ya'know...if they just want to give him money....:rolleyes1

But on a serious note, it is awful the girl is doing this. But on the other hand, its good that he doesn't understand how mean they are really being.
As a parent if I even heard of my children being this mean to another child I would beat them...(ok not really :lmao: )....but I would make them say they were sorry. It just amazes me how parents are not teaching their children to be nice to people even if they are different.
My oldest is at this awkward stage of pre-teen and some of his friends are just horrible to other kids. They make fun of their clothes, shoes and just petty stuff or other things. I told Jordan that if I even heard that he was making fun of these kids he could kiss all of his "in" clothes goodbye and whatever else. I am not a mean mom, but I am not going to put up with my child teasing another child because their parents can't afford or choose not to buy the things that I do for mine. OR if by chance the other child has a learning disablility. Jordan has always been the nice polite kid and hasn't done any of this so far. Even when kids make fun of another student who is autistic, they have been in the same class since geesh Kindergarten, I think. He stands up for the kid. He doesn't know any better.
Now, youngest child...he is the devil....

I hope things work out and that something happens. If not, maybe he will get his playstation a little sooner.
