My friend has a son and a daughter close in age and who therefore experience many activities together. They will be traveling to WDW next summer and she is wondering how to include something for her son similar to having princess dresses for her daughter. Any thoughts? They will be 6 and 7 at the time of the trip.

Thanks!!

My son and daughter are two years apart. When they were little we dressed them up together for WDW or DL.

Tinker Bell and Captain Hook
Elsa and Olaf
Luke and Leia
Kylo and Rey
Praetorian Guard and Phasma

I wish I'd been able to get them to do Belle and Gaston....

This year for Halloween, they were Gru and Bob. So cute.

Edit: About 40 years ago, my mother dressed my younger brother and I up as Snow White and Dopey... :-)

Regarding hot weather and costumes - I've found vendors on Etsy selling cotton jersey costumes that work very well in the heat, not skritchy polyester, sequins or glitter.....

We dressed our son as Prince Charming a few trips. But that was BEFORE he was 5. Star Wars characters are really popular right now with boys. As are Marvel heroes. I'd go that route.

Prince Charming, Prince Eric, Flynn, Kristoff, Fix-It Felix, Gaston, Beast (just the suit, not with all the hair), Jungle Cruise skipper, etc.

Girls dress up to empathize with the character.
Boys just need an object to possess. Any crude stick to hit a sibling is perfect!

Just about all advertisements work this way:
Girl ad: Woman in dress. Buy this dress and become this person!
Boy ad: Expensive item listing 4999 specifications. You must possess this item!

I guess I would ask him first if he even wants to dress up as something. Sometimes boys don't want to do that kind of stuff but would rather have a new toy like a lightsaber or something like that. Others have given great ideas if he does.

PSA: Ask any child (boy, girl, other) how and if they want to dress up. Any of them could want to dress up as pirate. Any of them could want to dress up as Belle. Any of them could find any costume too uncomfortable. You won’t know unless you keep it open ended.

My oldest dressed up as Buzz when he was four. It was very hot and not a cool costume but he absolutely loved it. We also brought a Yoda costume but that barely got worn.

I always just get my DS some character shirts and call it a day. If he was asking to dress up I would figure something out, but he never has. I wish Pirates League was still open because that was fun for girls and boys. My DD did the mermaid makeover there and DS did the pirate one. It was a really fun experience and not nearly the cost of Bibbidi Boppity.

Side question - does anyone have any experience with young boys dressing as princesses at the parks? If so, did you get any looks or anything? My 6 year old is obsessed with Elsa and Anna, and dresses up as them at any opportunity. I’d never say no to him dressing as his favorite princess on our trip, I just want to know if I should have “the talk” with him beforehand or be prepared for a confrontation.

I don’t have any direct experiences and I’m curious about this answer too. My guess is that Disney cast members will be cool and compliment his dress. If a guest or anyone makes an issue of it can you just act shocked anyone would have a problem with his dress? (And keep a change of clothes handy in case it makes him feel self conscious.)

I don't think anyone will even bat an eyelash over this. Also, they'll probably just think he's a girl anyways. Just let him dress up how he wants, and have fun!

I agree you should have no trouble with cast members - they tend to be Very child supportive under all circumstances. Be prepared with a positive statement to him if someone is unkind. I have no therapist training, but perhaps something ahead of time about how some people are silly and do not like Elsa or Olaf costumes will take the edge off in case something is said? Have a magical trip!
