*Girls DL Trip* OLD THREAD

Kelly, wasn't it you that had to take that test where you had to drink the chalky stuff and do an xray? If so can you tell me more info about it?

Thanks

I didn't have to "drink" the chalky stuff I had a barium "enema". I am sure you can imagine where they put the "chalky stuff" LOL. I can tell you though that my dad has done those and if you want to know what is involved I can pretty much tell you. I think you have to do the same prep that has to be done for the other's I believe. If they are looking at your upper GI tract they will want it "cleaned out". My dad has done it for that and for his esophogas. If that is the case they will make you be on a clear liquid diet the entire day before and then most likely you will need to do laxatives that day and then probably starting at midnight not be able to eat or drink anything until the test the next day. If THAT is the case try to schedule the test for FIRST thing in the morning!!!

Then if you have to drink that stuff it is usually like a milkshake consistency and then they just take x-rays.

Hope that helps. :)

Good morning ladies!

I'm off to Starbucks for free pastry day, and then work, work, work.

Have a great day!

Morning all!

Happy Tuesday! Well nothing on the schedule today expect working out and housework! Yippee! ;)

That's ok though. I'll take it gladly. Last night we went to El Toritos for Dad's birthday and then back to the house for cake but since Shane is working out of town we didn't stay long since he has to get up EVEN earlier than normal. So it was a pretty short and sweet evening. The girls wanted to swim but we didn't have the time.

It was SO nice not to have to go to swim practice I must admit. I enjoy watching the girls do swim team and I know they love it but I tell you once it gets to this point I am MORE than ready for it to be over. I hate to admit it though it is almost ruining it for me for soccer because I am so NOT ready to start with THAT now. We only have this week and next and then we start in with THAT. But most likely the girls will just go to practice with Shane and I will stay home cuz it is just TOO hot where they practice. There is no shade and it is so much later at night. NOT desirable. I do go to all the games though once those start. Plus school will be starting pretty much right after we get back from our trip! Hard to believe it is time for that already. Man this summer just flew by!

Anyway Lynn is supposedly going job hunting again today and so the girls and I are just going to hang out today and tomorrow since she is going up to Yuba City tomorrow to turn in her school work. I am sure she is going to want to do more "job hunting" on Thursday as well although I think that is cover for going out and messing around with her friends because there are only SO many places around here she can put in aps. We shall see. Then Friday we BOTH have to work. The secretary at work is going to be off so mom is going to have her fill in and of course that is my normal work day so fun fun fun! :)

Next week will be fun for the girls though. They have vacation bible school all week and they just LOVE that. Plus Lynn will be volunteering for that. So I have the house all to myself all week! :)

Anyway I hope everyone has a good day today and stays cool!

Take care and talk soon! :)

Hi all! Just a quick update.....I've been studying alot. This test is tough. Also found out that I'm going to be able to go to MN after all! Whoo hoo! I'm so excited. I need to destress after all this.

Yea that's what she wants me to do. More less just looking at my throat area, not the whole upper GI. I really hate getting old :(

I'm in Peoria, which is NW from Phoenix, but my son will be going to ASU starting this Fall. Let me know when you'll be here, we could meet somewhere in the middle.

Maybe when Vicki comes to Tempe, Heather can meet up with us, too...

I will for sure let you know when I'll be in Tempe! It's looking like now with our schedule it might not be until early Nov. but maybe I can find a free weekend before then!

Good luck with your ASU Freshman! I would imagine that he might have several friends from his high school going there too since he is so close. That is what my DD missed but I think it has been good for her not to know anyone. It has made her step out of her comfort zone.

Hopefully Heather will be near PHX too so we can all get together!

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is doing well. I am going crazy with work! I finally am catching up on laundry so we can pack for Vegas!

I've had upper GI xrays taken, and it's not too bad. I've also prepared patients for this procedure. If they are just looking at your upper GI tract including a small bowel follow through (where look to see how fast things move through your small intestines), then you just have to fast for a set amount of time. The stuff I drank and that I make my patients drink is clear and thin, but tastes chalky. The only time you have to be cleaned out is if they want to see inside your colon. You can't see anything if there is stuff in there coating the walls. I know it's uncomfortable and not pleasant, but it's saved so many lives. My father would not be here today if he had not had one done. He still has to have an MRI every 3 months because they are worried about the colon cancer coming back. I think it's wonderful that we have the technology now to find and remove the spots that can turn into cancer before it's even a worry. We are very lucky to live in the time we do.

That's my 2 cents on the subject, but you know what they say about opinions... :lmao:

That should be easy then! You will just fast for a few hours, drink the chalky stuff, and then have xrays taken. I'm wondering what she's looking for though.

Usually if it's a throat issue, an EGD is ordered, that happens in the GI Lab. Again, you just fast for a few hours, they give you medicine to make you sleep and not care, and they go down and look around your throat and stomache with a little camera. It usually takes 5 minutes tops, and really is not bad. You then have a few hours to get over your sleepy medicine hang over, but it's not bad.

Neither procedure should hurt. With the EGD, they can actually see ulcers and irritated areas.

I hope things work out well for you!

Heather

Hi ladies!! Hope you are all having a good day today.

I've got a doctors appt later in the day so I'm just chilling until time to get ready for that.
Talk to y'all later. :)

Hey all. Hope everyone is having a good day. I am working a double today so I might be on more later. My dad is coming to visit, and staying with us, on Thursday. This is not a good thing. I don't know why he comes, we never invite him. My dh is mad because since he is laid off he will be the one home with him, plus I have a bunch of overtime to try to make up the income we are not getting from my dh, so I will be home even less! Prayers for dh and for my marriage!

Later gators!

Sarah

I hear you about the studying Michelle.....that's all I do! - LOL
I hope your studying is going good. When do you take the test?

Oh, btw, did you get my PM?

Just a quick drive by to say hello .

Been going nonstop since this morning and I'm pooped.

Hope everyone is having a good day so far and staying cool :beach:.

I am so confused. Yesterday the Dr said she wanted them to only xray my throat to get a clear image. I don't understand why I'd be drinking the stuff if they aren't doing the rest. Today when radiology called to schedule the appt they told me about fasting. Can't they just do a simple x ray or ultrasound of my neck to get my throat :(

I'm surprised she's doing anything. This dr is actually my "second opinion" doc that really pissed me off yesterday. I've been having those palpitations for years but lately I've been having the palps that I feel in my throat and at times have a feeling of pressure in my throat ...like in that area where for a guy their adams apple would be. I'm nervous for either test...i don't do well with things like this.

I'm sorry you're so nervous. They will want the contrast so that they can see exactly where your esophagus is in relation to all the other structures in your neck. If they don't add the contrast, the air filled area will just look black. It just helps them see the surrounding tissue better. Also, they can see if there is something constricting your esophagus with the contrast it will narrow and widen if there is something pushing into it. I pray it all works out for you. It will not be painful though except for the hunger pains and the pain of drinking the chalky contrast. Hang in there.

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? I'm wondering if that's what they are thinking. Thyroid problems can cause heart palpitations, and if it's enlarged you would feel pressure in your throat.
