Girls clothing -- Venting! Tweens...

Have you tried JCPenney's yet? They carry extended girls sizes in Girls Plus. They have sizes up to 18.5 or 20, including swimwear. This might help to find clothing that doesn't look to 'old' for a young tween. Old Navy also has somenice things too.

I wish that more designers would make 'normal' looking clothes for this age range as the clothing that I sometimes se my niece in are eye popping. But this is what's marketed and sold.

We just went to Penney's today! I found some 16 1/2 shorts, but we brought them home to try them on and they were so big on her. We can't win, can we?

Part of her problem is she's got a tummy on her. I'm hoping she outgrows it in the next year or so.

A solution for low cut v-necks is to wear a cami under it. Old Navy has long ones that are made for layering (very thin).

That is a good idea; I'm just not sure about it in the Florida heat. We're going down in the beginning of June and the weather here in PA has been relatively cool, so I don't think we're going to get a chance to adjust to the heat.

My dd11 is a slim size 14 with long legs. Finding a pair of shorts that I think are appropriate for her to wear outside of the house is near impossible. I have searched everywhere. If I find them long enough, they fall off of her. As it is now I am forever telling her to pull her pants up because her underwear is showing.

I received the latest Limited Too catalog the other day and I was shocked at the clothes the children had on. What is wrong with these people that they design these clothes for children. Even my dd says that they are too short. Is it that children really like this fashion or is it more or less that they have nothing else to choose from?

I think there's just very little to choose from.

These past couple of years, I've had a lot of problems buying things for DD. It used to be a joy shopping for her, but it has turned into a nightmare with the crappy hoochie mama styles that keep coming out. She doesn't like them either, so I know it's not just me being old fashioned.

Well if you'd just buy her thongs... ;)

JUST KIDDING!

I don't have kids of my own but I find when I shop for other kids the less trendy the store the more appropriate the clothes. Just because they sell them in kids sizes doesn't mean kids should wear them. I wish more companies realized that.

They have nothing else to choose from. I have an almost 13-year-old who is tall for her age, and I have the same problem some of you are experiencing. I think these designers (and I use the term loosely) should be drawn and quartered. :teeth: Not only is there the 'hootchie/sleaze' clothing, but some poor misguided designing/merchandizing souls out there think resurrecting 70's style clothing (the '70s were a fashion *!*!hole :teeth: ) is actually stylish. Gauchos, anyone?! :smooth: Yikes!!!!!

What about these or this ? They have a bunch of t-shirts that aren't v-necks this is really cute and not low-cut.
Their Ts, tanks and camis are cut long by style.

I refer to these inappropriate clothing styles as "prosti-tot" :rolleyes2 .

agnes!

I love that last one! I'll have to grab that in a couple of different colors for her, thanks. :)

I like the last one from Old Navy too! Thanks WCK!

No problem. Did you check out the other "frilly" tops?

They have some neat swimsuits too. I really like this one.

They have a few modest one peices and several tankinis that aren't too revelaing

Sounds like where my dd is headed. She is almost 13, is 5 ft 3.5 inches tall, and weighs 78 lbs. She can wear size 00 from Aeropostale. When they have a good sale, I AM THERE! She also will NOT wear short shorts. She is pretty much in capris now. One thing we did, we went to stores like LTD2 that had zip-off pants. I got her sz 12 slim, which she wears with the bottoms zipped off (into capris. If we zip off the thigh section, they make shortss that are too short for her).

She does have a little chest now, and I do let her have those v-necks but she wears Old Navy Small tank tops underneath.

Because my dd has little curves now (slight hips and a slightly grown-up rib cage) Girls sized clothing look really silly...snug on the ribs and loose around the waist. SO I have bought her many of those tiny-fit tees from junior departments...you know the ones with candy brands or cartoon characters? She prefers the ones with funny sayings on them (I limit them to only non-offensive ones).

Good luck...the tween thing is tough. And JUST when you buy some clothes that actually mostly fit them, they have THE GIANT GROWTH SPURT!

We have problems all of the time trying to find appropriate clothing for our 4 DD's.

We are having a really hard with our oldest DD who is 15. She is 5' 5" and only 100 lbs. So ladies sizes are often too big and Jr's too small. We have had luck with jeans but now that summer is upon us, we have not been able to find shorts!

All shorts are now down to the knees (which she hates) or they let your butt hang out (and she does not want hoochie shorts!!)

I think our only hope for this summer is for it not to get very warm! Good thing she goes to a school where she has to wear a uniform - we are good until July!

My daughter is 12 and also a size 00. We love Aeropostale. They have good jeans and really cute t-shirts that are not low cut and very cute. The best part is that their sale area in the back is usually 50% off the clearance price and we get tons of shirts for $5.00/each. Love that place!!

I have found lots of tshirts at a local teen consignment shop, too. Oh, and Aeropostale 00 are the only 00 we have found that fit dd12 right now. Many are too loose in the waist still. And many that we find at the consignment shop have already been stretched out I guess, cuz they are loose also. Rave sometimes has stretch-denim capris that dd can wear in a 0 or even 1, but they are not stretching on her, they are a little loose but stay up. We learn by trial and error.

BTW...once dd started wearing junior tops (NOT the low cut ones, lol), she suddenly appeared to have a more, umm, mature body. I guess because the junior ones are cut to allow for a bust-waist difference unlike straight-cut girls tees. So be prepared when you make the jump! On THAT note, dd just had her first "certified bra fitting." Lol. SHE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH ME afterward, as much as she was excited beforehand. Don't know WHAT she THOUGHT they were going to do, lol. Just for the record...I know, TMI...32A looks pretty STACKED on a 78 lb preteen who is 5'3". So be prepared for THAT too!

Almost every other swimsuit we looked at had definite cups. She loves the cups, but sorry -- it's not happenin'. :teeth:

DD is 11. She tried on the swimsuits at Limited Too and they had padded cups. BUT, they have a little secret slot and those pads slid right out! We bought it and the matching skirt and flipflops.

She also has several pairs of longer shorts from LT Too also (she is a 12/14 there). And she loves layering polo shirts or button up shirts over cami's or tanks. She has one pair of size 1 junior shorts from JCPenney too. We bought shirts from Aeropostle, American Eagle, and Dillards. She dresses pretty conservatively and has TOO many clothes.

I know Penney's sells 18 and 20 in girls. A 16 in girls is a 5/6 in Juniors, but the shape maybe all wrong.

I was going to add that I get DD the cami's and tanks with the little built in shelf bra, is all she needs now. Lt Too has the cami's this way, and I found some cute lace tanks in the girls dept at Target for about $7 that had the shelf bra. I snatched 3 colors for her in a 10/12. She wears these UNDER shirts, real cute that way. I think the low cut shirts are made to go over something, that is they only way I see them worn around here. I wear cami's this way too.

Good luck! :) DD and I love shopping!

We just went through this. Trying to find some decent clothing for church and a college graduation she was attending last night. She is 12.

We ended up doing a top for the girls department in Target (not easy as she is very picky about not wanting anything "girly, frilly, floral etc.") and bottem from the JR department. I am not sure what size we ended up with as their sizes were all screwed up. One 1 would fit, in another color she'd need the 5 (???). Talk about frustrating!

Casual clothing she does long basketball shorts and tees.

School clothes (which is "uniform: pants, capris, long shorts and collared shirts) she does shorts from the boys department (so they are down to her knees or longer) unless she can find some girls bermuda. Some of the girl's and JRs shorts are so short that the hemline is directly under the pocket! I am not sure any girl looks good in shorts that short. But, at least there is no fight about it at our house. DD wouldn't be caught dead in short shorts.

The bathing suit she wants is from Lands End. Separate pieces--one looks like a teeshirt and a long pair of surf shorts. I keep telling her she'll be hot in that unless she in the river. But, it is definitely modest, LOL. It also has more separates that I'll get to mix and match (halter top and boy cut bottems).

Who knew it would be so complicated to clothe young girls?
