How about some games that they can play together? I always find that this is a great way for kids to "warm up". It always works when my DD7 has playdates with someone new & they're not sure what to do with each other. My kids love Uno, Big Trouble, Sorry, and Guess Who. Also books are great. Either ones that she can read to herself, or even better, some picture books that they can read together. Its a great way to cuddle & get to know one another. Another idea is something cooking related. A great way to spend time together. My DD loves a cupcake maker she got...its really a pain, takes about 30 minutes to make 1 cupcake, but her & her friends love it. As someone else mentioned, art kits are great too.

Something else I was thinking, if she doesn't have anything, maybe a nice large bag or duffel? Maybe a good quality backpack with her initials embroidered? Something that is hers and she can use to store things to make her feel more secure?

Oh, and Toys R Us has Tinkerbell and Tiana snuggies for $15 or so. DD was definitely eying those!

I agree with the previous posters - our oldest Dd is 8 almost 9 in 3rd grade - princesses are WAY out as are fairies, -----HSM, Carly, Jonas are OK- she plays with Barbies but isn't asking for one- but does want a LIV doll, and one of the new grown up Dora dolls, as well as a DSi , and an Ipod, and clothes from justice. I try not to get her make up, other than nail polish - and hair stuff is a huge no no plain headbands are Ok but bows no way! oh and I am getting her a set of Harry potter hardback books

I'm with the PPs on the toy/theme ideas, my daughter is 8 and into the same things. You might have her consider looking at Lillian Vernon for personalized things, sounds like she might enjoy having "her own" things with her name on them, and they personalize and carry just about anything you can think of from pencils and pencil cases to beach towels, to luggage and backpacks. Most of it is reasonably priced as well.
