Are there any elementary, middle, or high schools for gifted kids in Florida? I ran a google search but didn't come up with anything. Thanks in advance.

I know there are gifted programs at schools in FL. You need to test into them with an IQ of 130 or higher. I don't think I've heard of a separate gifted school.

You can check with each school district. Pinellas County has a public elementary school for Gifted children, but I don't think there is a middle or high school equivalent. Other districts may have similar magnet programs.

Duval County Public Schools have one dedicated gifted HS, Stanton Prep, and one which is also predominately gifted, but does have some nongifted programs, Paxon HS. There are two designated gifted MS, James Weldon Johnson and Darnell Cookman. The elementary schools have gifted programs in most schools, I think.

There are also designated schools for those gifted in the arts; Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (HS) and LaVilla School of the Arts (MS)

Stanton has ranked as high as # 1 public HS in the nation in the past, and is currently ranked #5. Paxson is always within the top 20.

Interestingly (or not) the students at the art schools also do very well on SAT/ACT.

Admission is based on a combination of IQ, transcript, and lottery (once the requirements are met) I think. You could check the Duval County Public School web site for more info.

Pine View School in Osprey is one of the best schools in the country. It's 2-12.

To be fair, both Stanton and Paxon are actually college prep magnet schools. They are not exclusively gifted schools and do not accept only students that have been members of a gifted program. The same goes for Johnson and Cookman. They are both the middle school "feeders" for the high schools, but people have also been admitted to the high schools without attending the feeder middle schools.

You are required to do talent auditions for both D.A. and LaVilla. LaVilla is the feeder to Douglas Anderson. Again, no gifted program participation is required to attend these schools.

They are all excellent academically, and both Stanton and Paxon are continually rated in the top of US schools by U.S. News (in 2008 #9 and #30, respectively).

They are all public schools.

The public schools in Florida have gifted programs. I know they have them at the elementary and middle level. We don't have any gifted only schools in our area. You have to test at a certain level to get in.

One elementary along with the middle and high school in our area are IB schools-International Baccalaureate. You have to apply to the program and be accepted. It offers a more challenging cirriculum.

Hope this helps.

There are gifted programs in some schools in Martin County. I don't think there are any gifted-only schools though.

Johnson, Stanton and Paxon are ADVANCED and gifted schools. They do not teach regular course work at these schools. The only difference I found in the advanced and gifted course work was that the gifted students are allowed to set their own pace.

BTW to stay in an advanced/gifted school you have to maintain a C average. There is no summer school, you just flunk out and have to go to another school next year. You also can't change to an easier school in the middle of the year. If your doing poorly at Stanton you just have to repeat the grade next year at your neighborhood school.
