Before my mom came to live with us, the family that lived next door was very good to her. They took care of her yard work, looked out for her, and were very kind to all of us.
We've become friends, and they're very good people, so it's really important to all of us to find a nice gift for them.
When the mom & dad came to the US from Mexico, they had a quick civil marriage. Now they have 3 kids 10, 7, and 4 and they are more or less established.
They have decided do a Catholic marriage/solemnization of their vows. I don't quite understand exactly what it is, but the invitation we got looked like a wedding invitation. The ceremony is at the church and then there is lunch afterwards.
I'm assuming a gift if appropriate, right?
If so, does anyone have any ideas? They have a full household set up already, even though I'm sure there are things they want. I didn't ask about a registry, because I assumed they didn't do one for this type of occasion.
I've given them gift cards around the holidays in the past, and they've been gracious but they didn't seem super excited, even though it was to a restaurant the mom said was her favorite.
Money somehow doesn't seem appropriate, though I could be wrong about that.
This is an entirely different cultural and religious experience for me and I don't know the "rules". Do we send a gift to their house? Bring one to the reception? Forego the gift and bring an envelope?
