My new niece is a week and 1 day old today. I spoke to my sister today and she seemed to fell a little overwhelmed with everything. She is fine with the baby but she feels like she is being snippy with people lately and is feeling guilty. I told her that it's probably because everyone is over there and in her face alot. She also says she don't understand why people don't see it as a given to wash their hands before they hold the baby and that's getting to her as well. I just wanted to get her something that might make her feel good but have no idea what a new mom might need to feel good about theirselves and everything else. I knew I could ask you guys and would get alot of great ideas. I was thinking Bath and body works but if there is something that she may need more that I am oblivious to I would really appreciate the ideas. Thank You for any help you can give me.

How about a visit from a cleaning lady? When my husbands assistant had twins last year each person from the office gave her a gift of this cleaning service. She had service for nearly a year and I know it was really appreciated and something she would never have done for herself. Even a one time visit can make a gal feel good.

I think the cleaning lady is a great idea
Magazines, candy, paperbacks, casseroles ready to go in the oven or a gift cert to a restaurant (someplace where her husband could pick up something to go)

Food - meals she can freeze, gift certificates for local carry-out or delivery places, or even a bag of snacks she can grab in a hurry. It may not make her feel good per se, but it will be one less thing she'll have to worry about during the day and that may relieve some stress.

I vote for cleaning lady! But first runner up is a heat and eat meal. :goodvibes

Or hire a sitter for her and let her have a nap. She's probably rather sleep deprived.

Take dinner over to her, all ready to eat. Just make sure you let her know ahead of time that you're coming with it. Stay and take care of the baby while she's eating, so she can enjoy the entire meal. Or, instead of dinner, offer to take care of the baby so she can take a nap.

I have 4 kids myself and any gift I got for myself was greatly appreciated :p
Bath and Bodyworks sounds great. Another idea could be some magazines, some really good chocolate (one of my favorite gifts  ), a breastfeeding t-shirt if she is breastfeeding, a CD with some relaxing music...

Our DS is now 2 months old. My favorite gifts were cooked meals, people cleaning the house for me, painting the babys room and babysitting so we could have a meal on our own. A massage might also be a good idea.

Something for her (not the baby). I always love a new nighty--something pretty and girly.

A cleaning lady is a great idea. Another would be to get her a big bottle of antibactiel soap(the kind that you don't have to rinse off) and paper towels. That way she can hand them to people as they walked in the door.

Sounds like she's a bit overwhelmed...which is 100% normal! I'm not sure how far you are from her, but you could give her a "afternoon by yourself basket" where you put the fixings together for a bubble bath, and gossip magazine, and body lotion and a coupon for you to come over and watch the baby for 2 hours while she relaxes......I'd have given ANYTHING for that after having DD's!

Foods always good!

Make her favorite meal and all the fixings and drop it off for her to reheat and eat. You will be her favorite sister!!!!

ITA, this is the one I would've loved to receive when I mine were born.

Make a wonderful meal for her and bring it over and offer to watch the baby while she sits down to enjoy it at a normal pace. Top it off with a decadent chocolate dessert or any favorite dessert of hers. I'd have given anything for this!

Get some hand sanitizer for her visitors.

Other than that - what people have suggested are all good, especially gifts for mom.
