One of my close friends recently had her first child (a son) and I want to get her something but I don't know what. She didn't have a shower and says she doesn't need anything. This is pretty much my first experience with having to buy a baby gift, so I don't know where to start! The baby was born about 3 weeks early, so I wanted to stay away from clothes since I don't know what size would be appropriate (she lives about 2 hours away and I've yet to see him).

What is something you would have wanted someone to get you? Is there anything she probably does need but hasn't thought of?

I have bought new parents subscriptons to Parent, Child or American baby magazine ... Who couldnt use parenting advice as a new Mom and Dad

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to get her a gift certificate to a store like "Babies R' Us", since you may not know what she really needs. :sunny:

If she doesn't have a jolly jumper that is what I would recommend, both my kids loved it and my dd was the "witchest" baby ever!

My baby gift for a first time mom is always a humidifier and all the stuff for her mediciene cabinet. This is usually at the shower, but you go through this stuff quickly, so even if she has it, she will probably need more long before it expires. Get Baby Tylenol, Baby Motrin, Mylicon, Syrup of Ipecac, Charcoal, Rubbing Alcohol, Peroxide, Calamine Lotion, Bandaids, and Sunscreen. Also a digital thermometer, a regular thermometer, and a nasal aspirator.

Obviously, depending on how close a friend and how much you have to spend you can pick and choose a few things or all of them. :goodvibes If you need a little "cute" to go with it then look for those little rabbit shaped ****oo things that go in the freezer. Also, they are now making humidifiers in cute shapes too.

Ohhhhhhhhhh that made me LAUGH! :lmao: Seriously rolling on the floor.

I will put in a space so that the 'puter doesn't think it is a naughty word: If you need a little "cute" to go with it then look for those little rabbit shaped Boo boo things that go in the freezer.

I was wondering what kind of swear you could put in this type of thread! :rotfl2:

Depending how many items she needs for the baby, you could think about getting something for the mom. My sister-in-law gave me a heart shaped necklace in my son's birthstone. I really loved it.

How about a pair of Robeez slippers. All the moms I know love them. You can't go wrong with the size because they start at 0-6 months. www.robeez.com
Some other ideas are
books
bibs
facecloths
wipe warmer
piggy bank
picture frame
baby spoons, bowl, sippy cup
bath toys
bath towels
safety supplies such as plug covers, bathtub spout cover, cabinet lock
baby first aid kit - nail clipper, medicine, medicine spoon, nasal aspirator, thermometer

I loved the robeez I got for my DD! I never would have bought them, but rec'd a pair as a gift. I then bought two more! They are great!

I love buying my kids higher end clothes, like Gap and Gymboree, and it sure is nice to have a gift card to those places! That would something I would have REALLY enjoyed!

You said she has most everything, but a must for me with every baby was the vibrating bouncy seat. And the Baby Bjorn. But maybe she already has these? You could always ask her what she really would like. :)

And something she and her DH would appreciate----a gift card for take out!

One of my friends gave me a PRICELESS gift when I was 1-2 weeks postpartum. She cooked tons of food that could be frozen and gifted me with some quality frozen dinners from SAM's club and Costco. It was sooooooo wonderful...I didn't even feel like cooking those first few weeks.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I'll keep them in mind as I wander around Babies R Us today :thumbsup2

The one thing every new mom needs is diapers!!! You could casually figure out which brand she uses in a phone conversation ahead of time. I'd skip getting preemies even though the baby is small and go for size 1. I'd even buy 2's to be safe since the child may be bigger than you think (I'm not sure how long it has been since he was born).
