Hi! My friend is moving (due to work) from New Jersey to Arkansas with her husband and 2 kids. They are throwing themselves a going away party in a few weeks, so I thought I would bring a gift, I just don't know what! Should I bring something "New Jersey" (although not sure what I could get this time of the year) or something to make them feel at home in Arkansas? Or just a bottle of wine? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

something easy to transport...

Do you have time to do a little research on the area they are moving to? Maybe a giftcard to a local place...

So I am assuming that they are moving to a place with no friends or family...if this is true getting some alone time would be tough...we have a place called Pump it up that does 2 dates nights a month. Its a bounce house place and they give the kids dinner. Its $20 for 1 kid of $30 for 2 kids...and close by is a stripm mall with the movies and a number of places to eat...A giftcard to all three would be awesome...if there is something like that there.

....hairspray. LOTS of hairspray.

We moved from NJ to TN when I was 10 (I'm now 46!) but I remember a "going away party" for my parents and someone gave them a large photo of the beach where we lived (LBI) and it was framed in a driftwood frame. My mom still has that photograph.

Maybe something like that? A reminder of something special from your area. Shame you can't send them cheesesteaks and pizza--they're gonna miss both, a lot.

...wow, LBI is so awseome - why would you move away? :confused3

kimmar - you must live in the South.

OP, do you know where in AR they will be living? My answer might depend on the area they are moving to.

For humor, maybe a book on how to speak Southern. Of course, with their NJ accents, they'll be asked - where ya'll from?

On the serious side, maybe give a momento that would remind them of your friendship. The gift card is another good idea. I think they will appreciate any thoughtful gesture you give.

LBI was/is awesome. But in the 70's it was not a great place to raise a family. My grandparents (all 4) and all aunts and uncles lived there too. Now, no one in my family lives there. :( My STBX BIL's mom still has a summer place there. It is just so darned expensive--none of us would have been able to stay on the Island after growing up and moving out. Everyone in my family is either on the mainland or out-of-state now.

LBI was great as a small child, storybook, really. The beaches there are absolutely beautiful.

East TN has been awesome for us. Our town is on a list of good places to raise a family. I miss the beach but have the mountains. I do not think I could ever live where there was not one or other close by. :)

Tell them to stop and pick me up! I'm tired of DC and ready to go home to Arkansas!!

As something funny I would get a southern dictionary. People talk a little "funny" you know. I'd also make sure they know how to pump their own gas and understand that central a/c is a MUST down there.

Depeding on where they move to AR you could get a centralized gift to get them out and about.

I like the book idea for the humor side! They are moving to Rogers I believe? near Bentonville.

Love the aqua net picture! Memories of the 80's!!!

Gas pumping, lessons, LOL!!!!!:rotfl2:

Okay -- I'll ask. Why? (I'm from Texas -- we pump our own gas. Don't ya'll?)

In New Jersey it is illegal for anyone to pump their own gas. An attendant has to do it. I had no idea before the DIS.

I believe if you try they throw matches at you until you either stop or burst into flame...whichever comes first.

OK, they're moving into Razorback (UofA) and Walmart (headquarters) territory. Lots of bazillionaires live in that area. They need to learn how to call the hogs. Maybe a humor book and a Razorback momento would be good. :D

Good area, by the way. Very pretty country.

wickey's friend - in NJ, you're not allowed to pump your own gas. Not sure why, though. Also, I took kimmar's hairspray suggestion to mean that due to the humidity, you need lots of hairspray. I may be wrong. That's why I have to use it....and lots of it. ;) Of course, she could be referring to the NJ girls with the big hair. :teeth:

Tina - come on back!

I think I may use a few of the ideas and a make a basket of them! Thanks everyone!

Do you know where in AR they're moving? There area a lot of "dry" counties there so a bottle of wine might be nice. ;) My parents moved from IL to AR (Pope County) and we always had a list of favorites to bring when we went to visit.

I grew up in Pope County and my mama still lives there! Small dis world huh?

Now my husband insists on a stop at exit 101 which is where the liquor store is.

Nope, you can't pump your own gas in New Jersey.

Who knew? I learned something today.

Hmmm . . . never thought of Arkansas as being humid. :) That's why I assumed it was the big hair.

Oh, and minnie, sorry to hijack your thread. Calling of pigs = SoooooEEEEEeee Pigs! (From the old Southwest Conference days!)
