We are doing an angel tree at work and I need to get a ~$25 gift for a 5 y/o boy...I have NO idea what a 5y/o likes... I don't have kids of my own yet and most of my friends who have kids have babies still.
I went to TRU and Target last night, I had never been to the TRU where I live before and it seemed REALLY small and not so nice. Target had a few things but I wasn't sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Remote control car, matchbox racetrack (there are tons of them), toy story figurines, Monster truck

Mine son is 4.5 and all he is all about trucks and cars lately. He loves all th matchbox sets.

Target has tons of games on sale now too. You can get him a board game for $2 to go with it. They have tons of coupons on thier site, if your not familiar scroll to the bottom and you'll see a coupon section you can print. I'm getting my son the Guess Who its on sale for $7 and there is a $5 off coupon

Nerf is always a great pic too. I'm not too big on guns but they have tons that don't look too gunlike.
I'm sure you'll pick out something great

No guns, and it's one gift per child. They are having a party for the kids so it wouldn't be fair. But I'll check out Legos and cars, thanks.

You can get 3 balls(football, basketball, kickball) in one box at places like Target or Dick's. My son did not play with his legos much because he had bad small motor skills. If you can only get one gift, I recommend something that has a multi-item pack and don't focus on small motor skills for a five year old. I think legos is really a gift for more like an 8yo anyway. Don't get me wrong, legos are great but interest specific and for a little older child. Focus on this boy being an 5yo in a home with very little to offer.

Thanks for your advice! I went out tonight and found something.
Dinosaur Train Dino Track Adventure train set. Dinosaur Train is a show right? The box says 3+, would a 5y/o watch this show? I usually buy toys for toys for tots, so I didn't have to worry about age appropriate.

My son is 4.5 and loves Dinosaur Train. It's a PBS Kids show and I know little boys like it. I got my son that same train for XMas. I know it hasn't gotten the best reviews, but since he loves the show, I think he will be happy.

If you wanted to go the Legos route, they do sell Duplos, which are bigger Legos. While my son likes little Legos, he does better with the bigger ones right now. He couldn't care less about trucks and cars; it's all about dinos and animals. Some boys are already into StarWars, but my little guy said maybe he will grow into that; he thinks it's a little scary. :)

Fisher Price Imaginext is also a really good brand of toys for boys that age; they have lots of sets, like Batman and Dragon Fortress.

We sponsored a 5 year old boy for XMas, but I was lucky b/c his mom was really really detailed in what he liked and needed. He was into Spongebob, Iron Man, and hot wheels.

Thank you.
All I was told was 5y/o boy $25 gift :headache:
I looked at the Duplos, but there weren't very many at Target. I have no idea where any toy stores are in my area besides TRU and I really did not like that store when I went in last week. Small and unorganized. This was really the only thing that was a complete "set" for the right price. Glad to hear Dinosaur Train is not a "baby show". The set looks really cute, I just don't know much about kids not having any yet, and I was worried.
