My DS wants to have a giant cookie instead of cake for his 13th birthday party. I am wondering if any one has made one of these using refrigerator cookie dough? How did it turn out? How did you decide how long to cook it?

I looked online and Mrs. Field's charges like $37. Way too much for a big cookie!! Our local Copps makes giant cookies for only $7.99 but I don't know how good they are. Has anyone tried them? Or maybe from another chain store like Cub or HyVee?

I really don't want to make one from scratch because we have no baking ingredients in our house at all.

Thanks so much for your help!

We have made one in our non stick 9 inch pan and it turned out pretty good. I baked it for 12 minutes then just kept an eye on it till it was starting to brown lightly. Not sure how long it actually ended up being in there. You do want to cook it long enough as it will fall apart if it's soft.

How big are you trying to make it? How big are the ones for $7.99?

This is why I think I am leaning toward buying one. I'm not sure how big to make it and how to get it cooked through in the middle with out the edges being too brown. It needs to feed 5 13 yo boys, and maybe a piece for DH and I :)

The ones at Hy-Vee are really good! I think they around $8 or so?

Thanks - that's good to know!

Thanks to both of you for your input. Anyone else buy a yummy big cookie somewhere?

It can be really hard to get them to bake evenly, especially if you are going larger than 9 inches or so. I would purchase one from a grocery store plain if I could and decorate it myself.

Both of our local chains- Bi-lo and Publix have them for less than $10. My kids love them!

Most all supermarkets with a bakery sell the big cookies. Usually around $10. Seen really nice decorated ones for like $14.99 at WalMart & Kroger. Even the ones from the cookie stores in the malls are cheaper than $37.......My dd has made them at home using her pizza stone to bake them on.

We like the ones from the grocery stores. I just made a chipwhich cake for my uncle using them :-)

I have tried it with no success. Brown on the edges...raw in the middle. If you have Sam's or Costco they have them in their bakery and will custom decorate them. I believe it's under $15.00 for a really huge one.

If you want to do it at home, instead of the refigerator ready dough buy the cookie pouches where you just add water. Those cook more evenly (at least for me) as they aren't so 'heavy'. Also, instead of using a baking pan use a cookie sheet to bake it on.

Honestly though, the store bought ones are yummy-and usually cheap enough. I'm thinking for 13yr old boys you cannot go wrong :)

We like the cheap grocery store ones more than the specialty store ones at my house. I usually pay $8 for them. They are always a big hit.

My friend always buys a plain big cookie from Walmart's bakery and then decorates it herself. :)

Last year, I made a sugar cookie for my daughter's science project. I used the tube dough and a air bake pizza pan. It turned out great. I spread the dough out on the pan. The dough spread and filled in on its own. Nothing was raw or overbaked.:thumbsup2

I made them for Christmas presents years ago(made 12 of them) and used the bag mix. They work on a pizza stone or greased pizza pan. If you don't have all of the decorating tips it would probably be easier and cheaper to buy one from the grocery.

Thanks everyone! I am definitely buying one. We don't have too many chains here and don't live close to a Super Walmart, Sams or Costco. It sounds like Hy-vee or actually any store might be fine based on comments. Thanks for your help!!

I actually bought a Wilton pan to make these, not that I've used it much. I bought it w/ a 40 or 50% off coupon, of course! It has a recipe on the paper when you buy the pan, and also I think there are directions for the refrigerator dough too. It is not super large, but I think you could make 2 or more and have enough for all. It comes out fine, I didn't have a problem w/ it the one or two times I've used it :goodvibes
