I wanted to add....I am a long time poster...just not under my actual name for this one :)

Ok, my family lives with my MIL in a house that she and her ex built maybe 50 yrs ago. I have Dh and 3 DD's (7, 5 and 15 weeks old) that live with us.

We haven't had any issues until about 2 weeks ago when I started to feel a presence in the room and noticed a black silhouette in the room with me. At first it wasn't a big deal. I have dealt with this in the past (my parent's house is haunted and I've frequently seen people/felt things there). However, now I'm feeling slightly threatened. Someone with a male voice said something in my ear at the top of the basement stairs as I was going down..... and I also had a male voice in my ear right outside our bedroom the other day. I do not remember what he said but it wasn't nice. I do remember that.

I want to say, my parents house is 200+ yrs old and this house is only 50 yrs old. I don't know what to do.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm freaking b/c I have no experience and I have 3 kids here..

sorry to sound crazy.
Oh, and we have no where else to go. We can't go anywhere due to having to change credit/charge card issue b/c someone got into our acc't.

Paranormal Investigators gobble this stuff up. I'd Google for a local one, and see if you can get someone to come out.

I might be in the minority, but I really believe in stuff like this, so if it was *me* I'd be scared to death! I really would, though.

I mean, there are things you can do to "rid" your home of negative energy (Smudging, for instance: http://www.asunam.com/smudge_ceremony.html ) but personally, if you're saying this spirit has talked nasty to you, I don't know that I would want to address this issue, unexperienced and alone.

My husband, because he likes to bother me when I'm watching those "haunted" type shows, said something about "Let's burn sage here...." and I said to him - no way. I don't want to stir anything up, that may be here, because currently it's absolutely fine.

Where do you live? I'll Google for you.

Are you guy's religious? Do you have a cross or a bible?

We're not - but I'd find Jesus awfully quick if I had someone talking in my ear. ;)

:rotfl2: You crack me up!! But, I would do the same thing!

I think I would have someone come bless the house. I saw one of those ghost story things on TV and that's what they did. It seemed to work.:)

I too jokingly (I hope! ;) ) think our house is haunted.

Long story short, it all started after we changed the light fixture that hangs over our kitchen sink. The woman who sold us the house commented on how much her father LOVED that lighting fixture (he had bought it for her). He died (although not in OUR house) three days or so before our closing.

I think he's mad and "visits" us occasionally. Since that day, this house makes the strangest, out of place, unidentifiable noises.

One day, I heard water GUSHING in the basement. Nothing was wet... Not the washer, not the utility sink, not the shower in the bathroom, or the bathroom sink.

I ALWAYS hear someone at our front door at night. Nobody is ever there.

Popping, creaking noises for no apparent reason.

Occasional "weird" feeling.

Cool breezes while in the shower... Even with door shut.

I am sure that it is ally imagination and typical "house noises", but I still wonder if it could be that man...

That's funny because my kids say that our house is, and I often "feel" someone here but I dismiss it. :rotfl2: If we do have a ghost, its a friendly ghost and it has a funny personality.

Just tonight I went into the kitchen from my bedroom and when I came back the TV had the Menu turned on. I had to hit the menu button again to get it off. It was not like that when I left.:lmao: I just dismiss it.;)

Now if I had some mean man talking into my ear, I would put a for sale sign up & call my pastor.

You laugh, but I would! I don't own a bible, or a cross - and I'd get myself both of those so quick.... I'd download the "Bible App" on my phone, and just keep it on, no screen time out, next to me. :lmao:

.....and I'll never remodel, ever. Nine out of ten times, on those ghost shows, they start with - everything was fine until we decided to (remodel the bathroom, knock out a wall, change the kitchen cabinets).

I don't care if I moved into a house with a green toilet... it's staying. :rolleyes1

Have you thought about seeking help with a psychologist or psychiatrist? Hearing voices can also be a symptom of a mental disorder. Please don't think I'm saying that in a mean way. I would just hate to see someone wasting their time on the paranormal when it could be something going on mentally or physically.

Cat, you're really cracking me up! :lmao: I'll fully admit that I don't believe in any of this, but I have a few friends who are ghost hunters. My husband thinks our house has a ghost, but my thinking is, if the dogs aren't freaked out then why should I be? You'd think animals would sense this better than humans would.

The brain is an interesting thing. You can perceive things that are real to you but don't really exist.

For example, my MIL is paranoid schizophrenic. When she was off her meds and psychotic, voices would appear "real" to her.

I would also encourage you to seek the help of a psychiatrist. You may be suffering from post partum depression as well since you say you have a 15 week old baby.

Please seek medical help.

I wonder why you don't remember what the voice said.

How come you never hear about caveman ghosts or roaming dinosaur ghosts or ghosts from biblical times? Because they aren't real.:)

They're always from about the 1600's to modern day times. It is very easy for our imaginations to play tricks on us.

I totally agree with you on this one. Everytime I did anything to remodel the house the cigar smoke would appear.

I realize nobody is trying to be means suggesting the op seek mental help, but she also SAW the black figures. I also had black figures in my house. they never bothered me physically, well except for the one night:confused3, but i've heard that black figures aren't good.

Just because the house is only 50 years old doesn't mean a thing. My former (haunted) house was almost 200 years old, but after speaking to the daughter of the proir owner it appears the ghost was that of her uncle (died only 20 years ago and was a cigar smoker:scared1:)

Holy crap. Could you imagine Caveman ghosts. They would be totally freaked out!

Ok,Cat, my lap top almost got sprayed with coffee!! :lmao:

But, I do agree with getting a Bible and/or a cross--I would most certainly keep one close by and say many a prayer.

I don't know if I really believe in actual ghosts, but I have come to believe that people put an impression of sorts on a place. So, I guess if a bad person lived somewhere then bad things may happen or a bad "impression" may have been left.

Why don't we see Ghosts from WAY back? They've been dead longer and have had more time to "come to grips" with being dead. The more recently departed may still feel some unfinished business.

That said...

Way back, when my family lived in our first home, we had a problem with our house and some paranormal activity. My parents had been married for 6 years and my older sister was about 4 years old. Mom was very soon to become pregnant with me.

My parents held a Halloween party in the house and decorated accordingly, including my dad's idea to hang a dummy above the basement stairwell along with a sign on him...something along the lines of "Here hangs so-and-so for xyz" (you know...an effigy).

After the party, things began happening in the house. Mom would be alone in the house and here someone cough in her ear or rustle her hair. They'd be laying in bed and hear a strange clicking on the roof that would move in a circular pattern around their room, going faster and faster and faster and then abruptly just stop. My particular favorite was mom telling me that the blow dryer turned on by itself....UNPLUGGED in the hall closet.

My parents tried to shrug off the occurences, but one night my dad went off to watch a movie at my uncles house. Mom didn't want him to go because my sister had been acting funny, talking about the "man in my room." Dad went anyway, and Mom sat up waiting for him to come home. My sister was in her room and came out to tell my mom that the man her room was shaking her bed but it was okay because he said "Don't be scared, it's just Uncle Bob."

Mom freaked out, snatched up my sister and took off to get my dad at my uncles.

They decided to get a priest to come out and bless the house. He was a family friend, and knew my parents and sister well, but when he walked in the house that day my sister freaked out. She started screaming and crying that she didn't want him to come in the house. Mom calmed her down and then explained to the priest what had been going on. He asked them if they'd done anything that might have upset the spirit, and when they mentioned the effigy in the stairwell he got SO angry at them! He blessed the house along with an apology from both parents and the strange things stopped.

HOWEVER, from that day on, until the day we moved out 12 years later, my sisters rocking chair in her bedroom would rock by itself when she was in there sleeping at night. My sister said she never ever felt threatened by the ghost...and that he was watching over her.

We did some sleuthing and discovered that the former owner of the house had died of a heart attack in the house. his name was Robert, but everyone called him Uncle Bob.

Whoa that is wild!

To the OP, our home was built in the 60's and my dh, father and I have experienced things since moving in. We did a huge overhaul on this home after purchasing it and noticed small things right away. Like hearing someone walking upstairs when no one was there. If it was just me I might have been concerned about myself but others have noticed it too. My in-laws house is also 100 years old and they had to have it delivered after moving in. They had some extremely bad things going on there.

With our beliefs, if I feel/experience something that makes me uncomfortable I do pray protection and cleansing of our home. I would agree with having someone bless the home and that you should be careful what you do yourself unless you have great understanding of what the outcomes could be (like stirring it up further).

I think there are many things that we dont fully understand. And I do think some are more sensitive to certain things than others. Just like a person's intuition.

I totally believe in ghosts, so this would freak me out! If it is your MIL's house, and she was the only owner, who do you think it could be? Is her ex dead?

I personally hold to the belief that it isn't the holy objects themselves that have any bearing, but your own beliefs and emotions. We have Ganesh at either of our outside doors (the people who built our house were Indian and left one Ganesh; a friend gave me the other as a souvenir of her trip to India), crosses and fleur de lis inside the house and I encourage spiders whenever I can - they're all protective things because people believe or have believed they're protective.

I also don't think that ghosts can last forever, but that they're some form of shadow or remembrance - which isn't to say that they don't have some conscious determination. So a house tends to "keep" its ghosts, if you will, until the house is torn down. Remodelling would, obviously, tend to stir up ghosts. I've been on some indian mounds and homestead sites that haven't been disturbed since they were created - just let to rot down - and some of them are creepy and some aren't. It seems to be a function of the site itself, not of the environment, as the creepiest indian mound I've ever visited was in a pretty place and the least creepy was in a swamp.

I don't want to speak beyond my own confidences, but I know of an archaeological site that some well-respected archaeological types honestly do believe stil has spirits - and the site is from the late archaic period!

I didn't used to believe in ghosts, even though I'd seen them and, as a small child who didn't know what a ghost was, really, interacted with one (At least, I have no other explanation.) ; then we bought a haunted house and the only explanation I can come up with is that either the rational laws of the universe took several holidays while we lived in that house, or that something that was beyond my perception was moving objects and causing things to happen in the house. I'll call it a ghost, but I'm not sure I believe in any traditional explanations.

As for bad things happening. . .Not sure what to tell the OP. My belief is that things that we, as humans, have imbued with spiritual energy of a positive nature will combat things of a negative or unholy nature. So I probably wouldn't just wave a Bible and expect something mean to be scared, but I might think through what my culture or other cultures I regard in a positive light or that would've been regarded by the builders of my home as holy, and use those symbols or icons to make myself feel safer.
