Just checked the flight details and online check in will not be available for my flight in Saturday .........was planning in getting to the airport about 3 hr before departure anyway ...will this be enough time to check in? or should we allow an extra hour or so........hope this isnt a sign of things to come

Check out this thread which goes some way towards explaining VA's current operational problems. I fear that not being able to check-in online could be the least of your problems, but hopefully the situation will be a bit better by the weekend.

There are no such things as pre booked seats, only seat requests and they will mean nothing if olci has been cancelled - they are probably still expecting delays.

You don't say if you fly from LGW or MAN, if Man I would arrive for check in opening - 6am, being at the head of the queue is the only way of getting decent seats.
If you're going from LGW and not able to do twilight checkin, you may have a problem getting good seats, especially if you have more than 4 people in your party.
