GG/DDP and tips

We are part of a GG in the fall. There will be four rooms of people. There will be times I want to pay all of the tip for a meal, myself. There will be nights I will split paying the tip for four rooms with the person from one other room. (One of the rooms is my college age sons coming down to join us for a long weekend) How do we go about this? I know with large parties, the tip is automatically taken out.

Unfortunately, you will have to ask other members of the group to pay up. It is billed on one bill.

You can also ask the waiter to ring up your parties separate, as your together, but not really together.

Both seem a bit awkward to me..and I too am going to have to do it in Nov.

So, if I want to cover the tip for everyone at the table, I have to carry cash with me to give to a representative from each room in order to do so? Can't I just add up the mandatory 18% (more than 6 in a party are billed this way) and hand the server that in cash?

Do we need to carry cash to pay gratuity? Can we use a credit card?

If you are on DDP, one person from each room will need to give their card to "pay" for the meal, resulting in separate checks. Each check will have the amount of the automatic tip added in and can be paid in cash, room charge, or other credit card. I'm guessing you could just tell the server to charge the tip to one card - yours, or half from 2 different cards. If you know ahead of time that you are going to pay for the tip, you may want to let your server know, so he/she can just give you the bill for the included tip.
