Anyone here ever had to get a scope to check out the stomach/small intestine? What was it like? Did you remember anything about the procedure? How was the recovery?

Poor GF has to get one to (hopefully) diagnose some stomach issues next week. Then in a few weeks, she has to get another study where they make her eat radioactive eggs (no joke!) and study how fast they move out of her stomach. I'll be her caretaker so I'm starting to worry about these procedures. Ayone here have any experience with these kinds of tests?

I need to have the scope done next month, too. NOT looking forward to it. :sad2:

Had it done....it is easy! Although I had a colonoscopy too. I had "prep work" for that which it is the worst part.

They give you meds and you do not remember a thing.

The scope was no big deal at all. The worst part of the whole thing was the worrying I did beforehand. That, and the nurse trying to get an IV started--it took her three tries and she still couldn't get it. She finally brought in someone else who managed to get it on the first try.

They took me into the room, had me lie on my side, told me to bite down on some piece of plastic. The doctor then told that a shot was going to sting and to take deep breaths. I was out within seconds. I don't remember anything stinging that's how fast I was under. The next thing I knew they were waking me up telling me it was over and everything was fine.

I was pretty groggy for the rest of the day. I think I came home and slept. My throat was just a little sore for a day for so after, but nothing terribly bad. I've had a worse sore throat than that during a cold.

All in all, it wasn't awful. Not something i'd want to do every day (although that was the most relaxed sleep I've ever had!), but I'd do it again if I had to.

I've had both the radioactive eggs & the scope... the scope isn't fun, but it doesn't hurt & she shouldn't remember anything, although I did "wake up" in the middle of mine & fought the tube... apparently they then gave me a boatload of Versed... that's one great drug :rotfl: They don't actually put you out for the procedure, but you don't remember it. It's okay, I've been through much worse.

The eggs are NOT A PROBLEM at all, you literally have to eat these eggs & then lay on a table while they take photo's, then you wait, then they take more photo's, then you wait and wait, then they take more photo's... tell her to take a good book, it is BORING.....

Good luck to your girlfriend, she'll come through great!

I got scoped in July...I was a nervous wreck!

It was truly "no biggie"! :thumbsup2

Yes. I told the doctor that I didn't want to remember ANYTHING and I didn't, it wasn't bad, slightly sore throat afterwards.

When I was "scoped",they used a child's size scope and I was given valium, just enough to relax because I do not like being oout of it. I do remember the procedure and it wasn't bad. I had a scratchy throat the next day but that was it.

My son needed an Endoscopy 2 years ago at age 14. He did fine. They gave him some sedating meds that knocked him for a loop! Afterwards we went out to lunch.

Yep, I had one a few years back. As others have said, the only problem was the worrying and fear before hand. It was nothing, I didn't even know they had done anything and it was over.

Ordered Dominos pizza on the way home for lunch LOL.

Ditto. My 14 year old DS had this done 2 weeks ago. He's a real big baby and said it was no big deal. If he can handle it, anyone can!

I had it done a couple of years ago--i worried for weeks before hand ...i dont remember a thing..my throat was scratchy, but that was it

thanks everyone! your stories really put my mind at ease (and I will share them with GF when she wakes up!). I have one question that she and I were wondering about, though ... the doc is going to take a biopsy of her upper intestine while he's down there. I don't know if any of you had that done at the same time, but if so, was there any pain or stomach discomfort afterwards? Thanks!

I've had the scope about 20 or so times. Not a problem! Those drugs are great & you don't remember a thing! :teeth: I usually go out for pizza or chinese afterwards.

I've also done the radioactive eggs too. No big deal like the previous poster said, and it is very boring. Definately bring a book!

They do take biopsies of my esophagus sometimes when they scope me. I never notice any difference.

She'll be fine - it's the anticipation of the unknown that's awful! This first time I did this at 19, I was a total wreck. Now, it's a piece of cake!

I had one when I was pregant, as I had hyperemisis and they wanted to see if anything was causing it.

It was no big deal.

marquis,

I don't have any experiences to share...but I wanted to wish you and your gf lots of luck anyway!

SillyMe...lots of P&PD coming your way too!

Thank you so much, and thanks to everyone else who shared their experiences. GF read the whole thread and she and I both feel much better and more relaxed about the procedure. Knowing that for most of you, the worrying part was the worst, is really great because maybe now we can alleviate or decrease the worrying part. GF is being a trooper but I'm such a baby that I have planned out everything for after the procedure -- we're going to get a bunch of DVDs, her favorite foods, and maybe even go out to eat at her favorite restaurant if she is feeling up to it. She's gonna be treated like a queen!

The scope is SOOO easy and the drugs are goooooood! :teeth:

The worst part, as another poster stated, was all the worrying I did for the 24 hours before the scope. I was a nervous wreck.
