Gettysburg recommendations

Will be in Gettysburg later this spring. Any good recommendations for where to eat? Also, are there any wineries in the area that anyone recommends? Just looking for some other experiences to balance out all the history. Thank you!

If you don’t have these in your area… why not check out one of the convenience stores in the area! But not just any random ones… I mean the GOOD ones… particularly Sheetz. They’ll come in handy if you’re not feeling like going to a fancy restaurant on your arrival night… the burgers and fries at Sheetz are so satisfying, and their drink selection is tremendous!

Once you get settled in, perhaps check out Heartland Diner on Springs Ave… lots of dishes to choose from… a chill and relaxing spot to dine. Open from 6am to 9pm every day…

Depending on on what you are looking for there is a place called Hoss’s straight down the road from the square where you order your entree then can add on the salad bar which includes other items and desserts.

We had a Hoss’s in my hometown in SW PA. They had a huge salad bar. I locked my keys in my car the last time I went to Gettysburg. Luckily I was on the Union side by the ranger station

I'm going to have to disagree with you there! WaWa is the way to go....

Anyhow, we aren't far from Gettysburg and have made several trips. We've stayed at and eaten at all of the below places and can recommend:

1863 Hotel of Gettysburg - decent if not basic place. Situated in a great location for walking around the town though.
Hotel Gettysburg, on the Circle in town is a decent place to stay. Good location, has a restaurant and a bar.
Farnsworth House B&B - interesting rooms, nice location & they have a bar & restaurant on site.
The Union Hotel - not far off the Circle in town, great place to stay.


Dobbin House, a bit kitschy but has some neat history and the food is decent
The Lincoln Diner - solid, great diner a block or two from the Circle in town.
Irish Pub - there is a Irish Pup kinda sorta across the street/caddycorner from Dobbin house, it's not bad
Farnsworth House has a decent restaurant and pup, and nice outdoor seating. There is a ice cream place across the street that has been busy every time we've been there, so that must be a decent place as well.

Have a great trip, don't skip the Visitors Center, diorama or the audio tour from your vehicle if you've got the time.

While in Gettysburg, eat at The Dobbin House Tavern or The Farnsworth House.

As for the WaWa - Sheetz debate...how about the fried chicken at Royal Farms? Yum.

I have no food recs, but a good side trip could be Hershey, which is only about an hour from Gettysburg. Not sure when Hersheypark opens for the season, but I believe they start with weekends in the spring. Other attractions that may be of interest: The Hershey Story museum, Chocolate World, Hershey Gardens.

I agree. I would stay over a few nights in Hershey there is quite a bit to do in that area. They have their official hotels but also other times close by. With admission to Hershey Park you get admission to Zoo America there is an entrance at the back of HP and you get your hand stamped and come back through there.

Dobbin House Tavern and Wawa all-of-the-way!!

Last time we were in Gettysburg we did a ghost tour. A little kitchy, but it was truly enjoyable.

Wawa -- for the win -- from someone actually from PA (although I don't currently live there).

Hello Dan! Oh, I’m still around, more of a lurker these days. I pretty much only frequent the Reading Challenge thread. Our kids are all grown up, one is married and the other two are on their own. We were going to sell our DVC contract but the kids wouldn’t hear of it so it’s theirs now. Although we did manage a quick visit to WDW last month.

I hope you and your family are healthy and well…judging by the pictures in your signature you are surrounded by growing grandchildren!

I love Gettysburg. My top recommendations for dinner are:

1. The Farnsworth House. This is a historic home to the battle and you can see many bullet holes in the brick walls. The history alone makes it worth a stop. Please note that there are actually three areas to dine here. An outdoor beer garden, Sweney's Tavern, and a Fine Dining room. I've eaten at the Tavern and in the Fine Dining room. Both are good, but I prefer the Fine Dining experience. It is a period meal served in the house by costumed servers. Reservations are recommended. The tavern is more bar food with props and posters from the production of the movie "Gettysburg".

2. For Italian food, I love La Bella Italia. It is not right downtown, but is pretty close. I love the food here. A big menu and I haven't been disappointed yet. I usually can't decide what I want.

We went to Gettysburger, had a great burger and joined in the trivia quiz with the locals. We were so welcomed and had an amazing night. When we head back there we will certainly go again.
