Getting water at QS places

I've read several times that ice water is available at QS dining locations as an alternative to carrying water bottles with us. Can someone explain how this works? Are there water cups and drink machines? Or do we have to wait in line and ask for it?

Usually you just ask and they'll give you one if the soda fountain is behind the counter. You can stand in line at the cashier, but they usually just wave you over to the pick up window and you ask there.

I carry a refillable bottle so I just go to the CS that have a self serve soda fountain. The ice and water are not operated by chip so you can fill at will. Just make sure your water bottle rim does not touch the spout.

Just to add to what @bookgirl said. The only park that doesn't have an accessible soda fountain machine is MK, you have to go to the counter to ask for water.
At Epcot you can refill yourself (if you have a cup already or an empty container) at Electric Umbrella and Sunshine Seasons
At DHS at Backlot Express
At AK at Restaurantosaurus
For the most part you don't have to wait in line to ask for water, I usually just go to the very end of each side and wait for a CM to bring someone's food order and ask.
For the restaurants listed above you still have to go to the counter and ask for a cup if you don't have one

At most CS places i went to during the summer they had water already in cups just waiting to be handed out. Sleepy Hollow was a good place to get water in MK. It comes in a big cup and its usually not crowded. Its also a good spot for the Fantasy parade and The Electric Light Parade.

My question is "Do you need to wait in the line where people are waiting to order? Or can you cut the line and walk right up to where people are waiting to pick up their food?" I tried it both ways last summer and neither one felt right. At Pinocchio's I waited behind about 4 families who were in line to order. When I got up to the cashier I told him I just needed two glasses of water. He gave me a strange look but did ring it up. I then waited at the counter for my water. The whole think took about 15 minutes. Another day, I just cut the line and went up to the counter where the food was being distributed and caught a worker and asked for water. I really felt that wasn't the right way to do it either.

I thought it was easier and faster to just purchase bottled water.

I tend to skip to the pick up windows because I have been told that by numerous cashiers. I don't walk in front of people but do stand sort of to the side and wait for a server to come over near and ask.

The tricky thing with the "debate" on waiting at the cashier versus going directly to the counter is the perception of the people who are waiting at the cashier and the people who are waiting in the lines to pick up their food. Those people don't know the person(s) going "around" them are only going for water. It doesn't make sense to wait in a long line at a cashier if only getting free ice water but then again, if you go around those people, then you feel badly. It's kind of a toss up.

Personally, I just use the water fountains.

I'm a local and go to the parks almost every weekend and don't make the line for water. I used to but the CM just told me to go straight to the counter and ask. I go on either end where there's more space and wait for a CM to come with someone's order and then just ask. No problem at all

If that's what I'm supposed to do, then I could care less about other people's perceptions. They can think whatever they want. I know I'm not doing anything wrong.

If I'm waiting in line at the cash to order food, I have no idea what's going on at the counter. Besides, I'm usually the person bypassing the people lined up at the cash to get my second tray of food because I can't carry two trays of food to my table in one go. What do you think people perceive I'm doing? I'm either getting a water, or carrying my second tray. It's not like I can go to the counter and order and pay for food. :confused3

If I'm waiting for my order at the counter, I have zero perception of someone budding. It's impossible to bud. I have already ordered. I'm standing there waiting for my order to be ready. Sometimes the people that ordered behind me get their order before me. It depends on the size of the order or the item being ordered. There is no real line here. If you want to ask for water, there is no reason to feel bad.

I tried drinking out of the fountains last trip & I remember it being pretty bad. The water fountains aren't filtered, right?

I just walk right up to the counter and ask for water if there is a CM at the door you can ask if you can get a glass of water here ( even if you know you can) most of the time I ask this they say yes and walk you to the front and say ( CM name ) can I please have a cup of water for this guest, that is what I do and when it is busy they normally have a greeter at front

I just walk to the counter, wait till someone has a second, and ask for water.

I tend to not care what the people behind me think if all I'm doing it getting a cup of water. yes, if possible, I'll go around those waiting to order. It takes them a few seconds to grab a cup of water for you. If I was after more than 3 or so cups of water I might wait though.
