Used to do the Pork & Kraut growing up, but my boys don't like it.

We usually do a pork roast and sauerkraut but not this year. We have a bunch of ham and roast beef leftovers to use up.

I do mine on top of the stove - fried....not baked. I like hush puppies better but that is not the tradition.

No special year after year food. Growing up mom always got something new for us to try to start off the new year. We also got New Year's Day presents- something to help us grow in the coming year- normally 2 things one for our brains- maybe a new family game and one for spiritual growth- sometimes books that were handed down and sometimes new ones, some years a Bible game.

I did make Chicken Pontablo for my brother before he left to head back to school earlier but that was mainly using leftovers.

January 1st is Rose Bowl day...so Pizza!

Growing up, my Mom would make a nice meal, she & my Dad are having Cornish Hens. But its a football day, so DH and I just want pizza. So that is what we are having.

My mom used to make sauerkraut and pork but we don't do anything in particular. New Year's day is usually a very lazy day.

Never thought of it. I've heard that Hoppin' John Soup is traditional. It's so tasty... I wish I had time to make it.

We have always had this b/c Grandma was first generation Irish to be born in the US.... Great-Gram and Granpa start the tradition and the girls kept the tradition and passed it on to the kids...and now I take care of it to pass on to my kids!!!

Growing up we made speck'n'dicken--a pancake made of rye, graham, and wheat flour. We put little balls of hamburger in them--just 3 or 4. You could eat them warm or cold. Most people put sugar on them. Some put syrup. I was never really crazy about them as they have a lot of anise in them. When we have made them in the past few years, we leave the anise out and like to eat them warm with syrup.

Didn't make any this year--didn't get to the whole foods store for the flours.

Otherwise we eat leftovers--every one is on their own for today!

No tradition growing up, but my SIL (PA Dutch) MUST have pork and sauerkraut, so that is what we have had the last few years (when their holiday visit coincides with NYD). My family doesn't go for it much (DH, DD, and DS), but I love it! And it is nice to share in someone else's traditions!...............P
