We checked out the cab fares posted by Sally before sailing and took a cab from the area near the pier to Chankanaab. There were plenty of taxis waiting...same thing on the way home. There was a line of people waiting for the cabs on the way back, but it moved very rapidly because a new cab would pull up as soon as the one in front of it was filled. We paid a bit more coming back because we had the driver drop us off at the far end of the shopping area so we could hit some of the stores.

Taxi is the most efficient way I've found to get there. Please remember that park admission requires cash ONLY (no credit cards), although credit cards were good inside the park. Don't believe any travel places that tell you otherwise....ask me how I know! Taxi is $10 each way.
You could also rent a car. We used Lesspay (at the Hotel Barracuda, 1 block past the Navy headquarters at the end of the pier). A very short walk. We got a ragtop Safari (a VW "The Thing" back here in the States). It was $30 (with insurance), and we drove it all over the island. The East side of the island is very picturesque (not a lot of swimming places because of rough seas), but more photo opps. Some some good restaurants too.
