Getting to AK before park opening

I heard somewhere that they hold vehicles at the entrance to the parking lot until 8:30 or so. Is that true? I hope not. I want to do one of the AK tours that start at 8:30. If we get held at the entrance toll plaza until 8:30, then park, take the tram to the entrance, I'm sure I'd be very late. Do they do this to all vehicles? Would I be better off taking a bus that morning? If I take a bus that morning, will they let people from buses in before 8:30?

They do not allow cars in early at the AK. If your tour is not on a early entry day you would need to use the bus from your resort. The buses will take you right up to the entrance just like they do on any other day. We took the 8:00 tour in AK and there were people there for the tour as well as people going the the Breakfastasaurous character breakfast. The CMs will have your name on their clip board, when we made our reservation we were given a location to go to and we had no problems.
The buses for the character breakfasts are running early and rather steady, you will have no problems.

Great, thanks for the info! So all I have to do is take the bus instead of driving, it seems. Do I need to try to get a character bus, or just the regular bus that takes people to the AK?

The buses are not marked character buses any longer, just take the bus marked for AK and you are all set.
