Getting thrown off the plane because your fat!

That's easy- cost. Not everyone can afford to buy two seats or upgrade to business or first class.
Given that Southwest makes NO secret of its Customer of Size policy, it's up to the passenger to inform themselves - and financially plan accordingly, if/in case necessary.

I actually had a question to those who bought a second seat as more of a curiosity thing. How do you "hold" the second seat so that no one tries to take it? With SW open seat policy I was curious how that works. Do you just tell people you bought two seats or is it a non-issue?
Have you checked Southwest's Customer of Size question-and-answer page? This is addressed. They give the passenger who proactively - whether at the time of the original purchase, between then and boarding, or after a 'test' preboard' - a tent card to place on the adjacent seat.

Go check the site. It's an interesting, informative, and NON-judgemental read.
