My DH got deathly sick in 12/99 this was our first trip with our DS. Good thing my sister and her husband were along his fever shot up to 104 and scared me to death. Of Course being a man he totally refused to go to the ER. My BIL and I carried him to the bathtub and tried to get the fever down. For 3 days he laid in the room while we went into the parks. The CM's are so nice about letting me call back to the room several times a day and check on him. Also, I hate to say it but My DS and I went back with my Mom the following summer with his tickets beings he did not get to use them. Food For thought after going through this situation. Take meds with you just in case. They are sooooo expensive at the Gift shops at the resorts.

I would bet money there would be few, if any, doctors that would indiscriminately give out antibiotics without evidence of an acute bacterial infection (you probably had a virus, if anything). Which leads me to believe from the information you've given that your BFs mother took the antibiotics without permission. Overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics is creating "superbugs" that are becoming resistant to the antibiotics we currently have. That's bad for all of us.

Actually, I've heard of many cases of doctors giving patients "just in case" antibiotics before they go on a vacation. I'm not saying that's a good thing, just that it seems to happen a lot. When we took Paul on his first Disney trip, I had lots of people tell me I should ask his doctor for a perscription for antibiotics, just in case we should need them.

If my doctor gave me a prescription for antibiotics "just in case," I'd be looking for a new doctor immediately.

My DH was sick on our trip in June. We were at FW and called the number listed on our guest services Florida Hospital Centra Care. A Disney representative came to check everything out and called the paramedics to do a check first. They gave him some options (we were not sure if he had a virus or gall bladder attack) We opted for the Florida Hospital Centra Care to come and pick him up and take him to their facility. At the facility, the dr was still not complete sure either, so the facility sent him to Celebration Hospital. At the hospital, after tests, it was determined it was a virus. He called the Florida Hospital Centra Care back and they picked him up at the hospital and brought him back to FW. Disney and FHCC handled everything so well.

I wish I would have anti-biotics on my first trip to Disney.

My daughter and I went to Disney in Spring of 1996. I had wanted to wait until she was a little bit older (she was 6) plus it was a graduation from college present to myself!! I had been planning it for awhile and had worked hard to save up the money.

Before we had left, my daughter's teacher had been sick, then my daughter had a touch of the flu, but after a day, had been fine.

About 3 days into our 8-day vacation - it hit me!!:crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: I have never had the stomach flu so badly before. We were stuck in our hotel room for 2 entire days - I couldn't get up. Being as this was the first time traveling alone with my daughter, I didn't realize that I should have bought at least Motrin, etc. with me. I had called the front deck at All Star and although they were very nice, they said that they could not send any asprin to my room because they would have to do it for all the rooms. Needlesstosay, I carry a medicine cabinet with me now, just in case!!:D

I'm also glad that I got sick in the middle of our vacation, this way we were able to adjust our plans to see our Must-Sees and plan for another trip to see everything we had missed!

I get sick EVERYTIME I go on vacation. No matter where I go (usually to Disney). I usually get very stressed right before vacation. I think that's why I always get sick.

In December, I think I had pnuemonia. I couldn't move it was so bad. The worst part is that I started to feel sick prior to leaving and called the dr. I took Zithromax for the 4 days but the day after my last dose, I felt so awful I had to stay in bed the whole day.

I always, always, take medicine with me. Better to be over prepared then to spend a small fortune on medicines.

It's not just the cost of the meds...have you ever tried to get to a pharmacy when you can barely make it to the toilet in time? We always travel w/our regular prescription meds (zyrtek), plus motrin, immodium, antacid, the muscle relaxants for my back, decongestant for adults and kids, and tylenol3. One caveat: If you travel with prescription meds, make sure they are in their bottle from the pharmacy, with the pharm. label and script#, doc's name, etc.

WOW! I can not fathom that "Doctors" are prescribing "just in case" Antibiotics. No wonder why there are so many drug resistant BACTERIAL strains out there.

Antibiotics are for bacterial infections and DO NOT WORK for the common cold, the flu or stomach illnesses(generally the norovirus).
All are viruses.

Please get a new doctor.

Washing your hands frequently works best.

Have Fun,

I had the worse sinus infection. I tried taking so many over the counter medicane and it didn't make a dent. To make matters worse, during the end of my trip I lost my voice. I had to blow my nose for an hour before leaving to the parks because my nose was so stuffed up. When I got home, I got some good medicane and I was cured.

i do believe that most trip illnessess are due to stress, and probably allergies. we noticed last trip that the water rides smelled mildewy. there are also a lot of snotty noses, stomach bugs etc that are passed on from those ride ques. ive seen more than one kid licking the bars and handrails.

also most bacteria are sensitive to specific anti biotics now,and taking just in case anti biotic may cause a person to be ill for longer periods.

but medicines like phenegren, sinus pills and the like are invaluable.

we use a lot of anti bacterial goo and hand wipes and always take lysol and spray the room, just in case.
