Woo hoo, we did the hard part I think. We have a Verizon Family Plan we want to get out of. Just paid $190 to break DD' s iPhone from the plan and she is now prepaid. Now we have 4 phones that are not under contract and we are thinking of Straight Talk ( well at least DH and I are, the other kids can go with whichever they choose) Now, can DH and I just bring our phones to Walmart or do we have to cancel our service with Verizon first? Thanks

I didn't think verizon phones were compatible with straight talk. Maybe I'm wrong. I just paid for year 2 with straight talk ($495) and am very happy.

Go to the straight talk site and look at bringing your own phone. You can put the numbers ( I don't remember what they are called) from your phone in to see if it can be used for straight talk. Neither my iPhone 4 or 4s was able to be used by straight talk. I looked at pp but read some reviews that some had a lot of problems with iPhones so that scared me away from them. So I just decided to stay with verizon and go prepaid.

Thank you. I am ready for a smartphone anyway so I' m going to make the changes all at once. Now I have to decide which phone :faint:

ST does fine with my AT&T iPhone 4. I did have to spend some time to get iMessage to work but it was well worth it for a $40/month plan with unlimited text and talk.

wait to cancel until after you have gone to Walmart. if the phone is compatible with their service then you can keep your old number (its called porting), and when you do that it should cancel your service automatically, but call Verizon to double check that it did cancel. If you cant keep your phone, then you'll have to buy a new phone and they should still be able to keep at least the main phone number off the account. I just did this and they were able to only keep my number since it was the main one. and I had to call and cancel the second line on the account myself.

Straight Talk does have a "Bring Your Own Device" program on their website (don't bother taking your phones to Walmart, as in most cases, the store associates won't know what you're talking about).

All you do is enter your Verizon phone's ESN -- the only phones they will not accept are phones which were provisioned for prepaid carriers (even Verizon prepaid).

Page plus does fine with iPhone 4 and 4s through Verizon as long as it's not brand new. I've got a 4s on page plus and have zero problems

Thanks for the help everyone. I actually just switched to Page Plus but will check out the ST byop option for DH.
