Is it possible to get your money back on a non-refundable airline ticket?

We are booked to fly out of Atlantic City on Spirit. We got an email changing our return flight time. This does not work for us. We talked to customer svc once and they said that they would refund us for the return flight only. Problem is that there are no other airlines that fly to MCO out of Atlantic City. So we could only get a new flight from MCO to PHL. This does not work for us. We would love to get a total refund and fly out of PHL.

Is there anything we can do to get a total refund. If they didn't change the flight time, we wouldn't be trying to change at all. They said that they could change our flight to the next day, but we have to come home on 9/8 because dd starts school the next day.

Any help/advise would be great....

Generally if there is a schedule change that makes the trip useless, you may get a refund of the entire itinerary.

But notice that if you bought two one way tickets as opposed to one round trip itinerary then only the affected ticket need be refunded.

Still, call them again and get a second opinion or see if you can convince them to refund it all.

Call Spirit and ask. Most airlines charge some sort of fee for changes (or cancellations) and then they may "refund" the remaining amount of the ticket in the form of a voucher for future travel. It's not ideal, but it is something.

Spirit can tell you what their policy is and then you can make an informed decision on what to do. Maybe, given your situation, they might be flexible with their policy. Keep your fingers crossed.

If the change is significant (4 hours or more) and you have a R/T ticket PUSH THE ISSUE. Go higher up if you have to. You might also to the airline website and check their contract of carriage.

Spirit says:
In the event that Spirit is unable to provide a previously confirmed seat and is unable to reroute the passenger to their satisfaction via Spirit, Spirit will refund as indicated below:

Customers involved in a Spirit Airlines initiated cancellation or schedule change will have three (3) options available to them, re-accommodation, future flight credit, or refund.

Sounds like you should be able to get your money refunded, just make sure you can get a beter deal somewhere else first.

Thanks everyone for your help and response. I just want to let you know that my dh called again last night and talked to a different person and we are being fully refunded for our trip. We really pushed the issue that there were no other airlines that flew out of ACY and that the reason for us wanting the refund was because of what they did with changing the flight, no other reason. We ended up re-booking a round trip flight out of PHL on USAir. This works better for us. We will get into MCO earlier and will come home later on 9/8. It also will save our family about $200. I truly thank Southwest for the cost savings. Until they came into PHL and shook things up, USAir could charge whatever they wanted. Now, Southwest hasn't even had a flight and USAir is responding with reduced costs, :p . I guess I should also mention the frequent flyer miles that we will get - YEAH :Pinkbounc .
