So some of you know that I had decided that after 13 years together, I had decided to formerly propose to Joe back in 2003. All was great, all was wonderful. Couldn't have asked for a better scenario. A coupla bumps but it ended with a big "YES!", Epcot fireworks, great friends around us, and champagne.

Since then, we went into planning mode. Yikes that stuff is horrible, to put it mildly. I'd rather drink gasoline, put a firecracker in my mouth, hand a kid some matches and tell him to flick 'em at me. Eloping is looking better and better.

Anyway, we had planned on doing the marriage deed this past Fall, but with all that had happened with job chanages for me, career changes for Joe, having to move this coming Spring, etc... we put it on the back burner. Next to the gasoline and matches.

In the meantime, what does an unconventional and non-traditional couple do? Well, if one guy can propose to another, then why can't the other do the same? That was Joe's reasoning...

We had decided to exchange Christmas gifts this past Sunday night because this entire week was going to be so incredibly busy with work and social activities. We had also not wanted to lug all of our gifts for each other up to the folks' house, only to repack them and drag them back home. So we swapped. Joe loved his things and I definitely loved my Delphi personal satellite radio. Those things ROCK man!

After we were finished unwwrapping everything, with Bill the Evil One sniffing around the discarded paper and boxes, ostensibly looking for hidden Beggin' Strips or gold nuggets, whichever, Joe sidled up to me and said, "I forgot to give you something." I just chuckled because without fail, with 15 Christmases behind us, he has consistently forgotten a gift hidden in the depths of his closet. Sort of like the cranberry sauce that we always forget to put out until after Thanksgiving dinner is over. On that note, whatever you do, cranberry sauce does not make a clever topping to pumpkin pie, no matter how much you try to convince your guests.

So Joe handed me a little box that he carefully wrapped himself. For the uninitiated, that means he slapped about four feet of wrapping paper around a little tiny cube, then sealed it in a pound of scotch tape. It was so hermetically sealed, a biochemist would have been proud.

Curious, I struggled with the little package, finally breaking the seal to what I though was an audible hiss of escaping poisonous gas, and found a ring box. Immediately, I get a little teary eyed. Before I could open it, Joe shyly muttered, "Of course I'll marry you, whether this year, next year or the year after." Inside was a beautiful yellow gold band, with a white gold inlay, with tiny diamonds in a line along the white gold. You Sopranos fans, don't get your hopes up, it defintely was not something that would be sitting on Tony's finger. In fact, it was masculine but tasteful, and kinda pretty if I do say so.

After much hugging and not a few tears (first time the lug ever made me cry in all the time we've been together), I'm engaged... again. Who knew?

Oh, and the Delphi radio thing? Still rocks! Just not as much as the ring that's sitting on my finger as I write this.

Have a wonderful holiday everyone! Best wishes to you all in the new year!
