Getting dress down to Florida??

My Disney wedding is in a couple weeks and the plan is to take my dress as a carry-on on the flight. I'm kind of nervous about it though because I have never taken something so awkwardly shaped on a plane before!...Do they give you a hard time at security and/or on the plane? We are taking southwest...I'm not sure if it varies by airline.

What was your experience, or what have you heard about this?

i'm taking southwest as well. i'm trying to fit in it a space bag, but it's huge...if not, i'm going to put it in a garment bag and carry it on and hope for the best.

I didn't fly southwest, but usair. i carried my dress on and it was huge! we put it in the overhead bin and it was fine. we actually had dh tux with us as well and they hung that in the closet in the front of the plane. i had emailed usair to be sure that their bins would be large enough to accomodate a dress because i didn't want to get to the airport and have them tell me that I would have to put it under the plane. They told me I should be fine,and I just had it in the david's bridal bag...

so when you put it in the overhead, did people have room to put their bags in there with it? did you fold it up? i'm just scared that they're going to try to put their bags ON IT which of course would cause a massive bridezilla attack...

Hi Girls, I just had my DFTW two weeks ago. I shipped my wedding gown, FEDEX to the resort I was staying. It took about 5 days to get to the Contemporary Resort. I was given tracking #'s, everything was shipped before the Christmas Holiday. It worked out perfect, I didn't have to take the huge dress and crinoline on the plane. I would do it again, maybe for the vow renewal in 20 yrs.

You were able to ship it!? How fabulous. I was hoping this was an option. How did you package it? Did you have to have someone steam out wrinkles once you arrived? If so who did you use?

I'm shipping mine straight to Carolyn Allen's, and they're going to bring it to my hotel and steam it for me. It only costs $15 on top of the cost of steaming, and then they will mail the dress back to your house for you! They will also clean and preserve it for you, but that costs more and is totally not worth it, IMHO.

I'm using the box my dress came in - I bought it off eBay, so it was sent to me in its original box.

Yup ! That is exactly what I did. Made for a lot less stress and hassle. They picked the dress up at the bell stand the morning after my wedding, cleaned it and shipped it back home to me. I didn't have to mess with it on my way down or back. Actually this speeds things up once you are there as well. They steamed our gowns before they brought them to the resort. So when they came to deliver the tuxes and dresses they only had to do touch ups. I shipped all our gowns down and then we ordered the tuxes through them.

I highly recommend it !

I would have also send my gown to Carolyn Allens but I had favors and our own champagne glasses and some other items to ship to the resort anyway. It was just easier for me. Although we used CA for dress steaming and my now DH's cool Mickey tux, Sue just came right to the room with the tux and steamed my gown, crinoline, wrap and veil. I decided not to have my gown shipped home because it got trashed anyway. The elevator really enjoyed the gown as it got stuck and wouldn't let me out, it was pretty funny

Not to go too far OT, but we are shipping our ceremony and reception items to our hotel - how far in advance should we do this? What do we put on the box so the hotel knows to keep it for us? Thanks!

I shipped our items out 12/14 the resort received them 12/20, our checkin date was 12/23. On the box or boxes you put your name, next line in care of the resort you are staying, next line hold for checkin on your date, next lines the resort address. Don't put your ressie # on the boxes because that # is linked to your credit card. I'm happy to help as I got plenty of help from the disboards. I had the wedding of my dreams thanks to all of you disers.

that's kind of what i hope happens to me. was your flight full? i was going to ship the dress originally, but that makes me soooo nervous. what if something happens?????

When it came it was folded up inside a plastic bag with snap closures, kind of like a bedding bag. They turned it inside out, folded it in thirds lengthwise and then folded that in thirds, um, other...wise.... So I refold it, stuff it in the bag, and drop the bag in the box. But then, my skirt is less swoopy than yours.... Maybe a space bag would work?

I had bought my dress up in NY but live in FL. So I just went up last week to pick it up. I flew Southwest and it wasn't a problem at all. I packed it in two of teh garment bags they give you at the shop, and then placed that in a luggage garment bag. I took it through security with no problem and then I placed it in the over head bid above my seat. I was really nervious about it all but no one even asked about it and it all went through like nothing!

Call your airline and tell them that you'll have your wedding dress when you fly. Some airlines will let you store it in the flight attendant's "lockers" at the front of the plane.

We called South West before the wedding and they told us since there is no first class on South West they don't have closet space for the dress. Instead I managed to fit it into a carry on suitcase. And I made sure to get my boarding pass online as soon as I was able to - that way I was first in line and had access to all the overhead bin space I needed.
Just tell the Flight Attendants that you're getting married - South West loves brides! (we got two bottles of champaign)
