Getting Best Flights at Busy $$$ Time

If prices are that high when addition flights come out you could always check out airports in Ohio like Akron. Spirit can have some cheap flights there. 6 hour drive?

Now I feel bad about taking my 7 & 10 year olds out of the first two weeks of school so we can try a less busy time and save $.

Nothing to feel bad about as every parent makes their own choices. And if it makes you feel any better, we pulled our kids out of school last April when they were 10.5 years and 6.5 years. To be honest, i'd be ok pulling them out but my husband prefers not to, so I respect that.

While the deals weren't great in early April for those dates I posted, there were Tango flights which would have been cheaper. But there's only so many of those, and more people watching for the flights. What's more, because Toronto is the hub for many flights from other parts of Canada, those flights are very in-demand during spring breaks.

I suggested the one way tickets because they are the same price (no penalty for only booking one way) and you'd get first dibs on those flights out of Toronto. If you wait, someone else might have beaten you to it.

I also watch on Google Flights, and Hopper (the app) to see if those flights would ever come on sale. They didn't. Well, the direct flights didn't. If you're willing to make a stop or two (that Montreal stop is cheaper, I think), then you might find a better price. In my opinion, however, if the weather's okay for flying here, there's no guarantee it'll be okay in Montreal or New York, so I feel like making a northern stop like that is a bit like rolling the dice.

One other thing, don't forget that West Jet flies out of Hamilton. They don't go daily to MCO, but they do have flights, if you're willing to check that, too. You might also look at London, Windsor and even Detroit and Saracuse. I mean, why not see what all the options are, if you're willing to make that drive.

We have gone several times over March break. Canadian airlines always hose you at that time of year and I have stopped flying WJ direct in March and switched to Delta out of Detroit. In 2013, we paid $4200 for 4 with WJ. In 2015, we paid $2400 CAD for 4 with Delta and our dollar was starting to slide from par at that point. In 2017, we paid $2900 CAD for 4 with Delta and our dollar was really low by then. So even with a lousy exchange, Delta out of DTW was still much cheaper.

FingmentSpark, thanks. Got it...since flights are released one new day at a time, that's why you were saying to book going there and then return when it comes up. I've used Hopper too (and actually have a notification on this year's March break just to watch and get an idea). I agree..flying to Montreal or NY can only up the risk wrt bad weather. Will also check out the other cities.

deedubb, when looking at flights to Miami in August, I noticed some good prices out of Detroit. Sounds like it's really saved you over the years. You haven't had issues with the drive and snow storms/freezing rain?

We have never had bad weather over March break. I don't know if it has just been luck, but in general, it is starting to warm up by then. We went to WDW twice last year. March break with Delta, and then Xmas. We chose to go with WJ at Xmas because I was concerned about the weather and didn't want to risk the drive. In general, I find there is no significant cost savings at Xmas as every airline jacks up the price.

I should add that in my above post, the $2900 with Delta when our dollar was really low was for the Delta comfort seats, so the regular seats would have been even cheaper. If you don't mind the drive, that is definitely the way to go as it is quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks for getting back to me. Will consider Detroit then. I know it's not 100% sure on ok weather but makes me feel better hearing your experience.

Do you generally drive in the night before or book a flight end of the day and start driving in morning?

We always drive the night before and stay at the Fairfield Marriott using our free night with the Marriott Visa. It is right next door to Qwik Park.

In the morning, we grab free breakfast, drive next door to Qwik Park, and they shuttle us to the airport. If you have CAA/AAA, there is a discounted parking rate. You can also pay for a package at Marriott that gives you the room with free parking for about a week or so. Even if you pay for a night, it's still cheaper than Westjet/Air Canada at March break. I also prefer crossing the border by car as it seems to be much less of a headache than customs at the airport. We have always found it to be very quick with no hassles from the border guards.

We use expedia, we usuallu end up flying AC but booked through expedia it is far cheaper.

Deedubb, thanks for the hotel info. We'll definitely keep Detroit in mind as an option.

Pkltm, we usually book through Expedia too as DH collects points. It isn't huge savings but every bit helps.

For those of you who use Expedia, ebates.ca gives you a rebate.
