Getting around Anaheim

We are going to Disneyland in Feb 09. DH would like to golf, and I would like to be able to get to a grocery store for snacks, etc. What is the best way to get around? We are flying and probably taking Super Shuttle to our hotel. Don't want to pay to rent a car for 5 days and have to pay to park. We will be at the DoubleTree Suites.

Thanks!

What are your plans for getting to the park every day? Just curious.

I can't really be of any help because we always rent a car.

Right now we are planning to walk. We will have a stroller for DD3 and don't mind walking. We know ART is an option if we so choose. We picked DoubleTree Suites because close enough to walk from.

Is your hotel the one at 2085 S. Harbor Blvd? I went to google maps and it says it's about a 20 minute walk to the gate. Does that sound about right?

Yep, that is the one. I have read 15-20 min walk. But I have also read reviews on Expedia and TripAdvisor of shorter times, so probably depends on your speed!

You can do it in about 20 to 25 minutes at a brisk pace to baggage screening. It's a hefty walk but not too far if you're used to Disney World.

End of the day you may find it taking a little longer. It's not that far a walk.

The nice thing is that there is a Denny's right across the street.

We got our package through Dreams Unlimited. She just quoted me the other day $56 total for RT for three of us on Super Shuttle from SNA. We will have DD3's carseat, and she checked to make sure they could accomodate that. We didn't book yet, but probably will. $20 less then the Disney Express. We may rent a car for part of a day to hit a beach, not sure.

We're going in January (21st-26th.) We're renting a car. Right now on orbitz it says it's going to be $175. But last week it was as low as $120 or something. I'm hoping it goes down again. It's so much easier having a car. We still walk to the park but it's nice to go to the beach, visit family, go to the store, etc.

Hmm, maybe I will look more at a rental. Then we have for when DH golfs and maybe a half day at beach and Target run. Only issue is DoubleTree charges for parking. I should find out if they wave that for HH members.

Our hotel only charges $4 a day for parking so it's not too bad. But I know that some places charge a lot more. It's ridiculous.

Does DH have a golf course in mind? There aren't really any nice close courses around DL.
Hotwire is a great place to get rental cars. I wouldn't use Hotwire for a hotel. But when it comes to a car, what could really go wrong?

He hasn't look real close, I had found Anaheim Hills and read good stuff on TripAdvisor about it. We are there 5 days, so he would do that one afternoon while I spent time with DD. Then I get a spa visit one day too! ;)

Anaheim Hills is a very good muni course. I usually play there a few times a year. It's difficult to get on there on the weekends, but weekdays aren't a problem. It's a good course and course knowledge is important. You can tell him the first time you can see the pin from the tee box in on number 11.

DW and myself do the same thing. We are going to WDW in December and while I'm out golfing, she'll be at the spa.

Anaheim Hills is about 15 miles (30 minutes w/out traffic) from DL. Coyote Hills in Fullerton is also a good public course and it's just a few miles closer.

Hey, MrsMoore, I work in Lynnwood. Grew up there, too. ("The Big Hair Capital of the Northwest" --yes, I had big hair in the 80's!:thumbsup2 )

You could switch your reservations to Howard Johnson. At the risk of incurring the wrath of people around here who think HoJo's is overrated, it's pretty popular on these boards because it's the nicest hotel on Harbor for the cheapest rate, if you can get the Entertainment Book rate (currently it's $59 a night for a standard room, $74 for a deluxe, Disney-facing room). The Ent rate is not yet listed for February, but it's a fairly good bet it will be available in February, especially if you're going midweek. You can book now, then call and change to the lower Entertainment rate when and if it becomes available. Here's the website with the dates: http://www.hojoanaheim.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14 Oh, yeah, and HoJo has free parking. So that would help out with the rental car thing, too.

Doubletree is a bit far to hoof it, especially at the end of the day, when you're worn out. Let's face it, at the end of the day, even the GCH seems too far, but it's nice to be right across Harbor and up a block, rather than a 20 minute walk out.

Just a suggestion.:goodvibes

I think the main thing that would keep me from booking the hojo is that it backs right up to the freeway.

I'm an Anaheim Plaza girl. $69 a night (you don't need the entertainment book or anything.) It's an older hotel but we've never had problems there. It's just a basic hotel. But it works well when all you need is a room to sleep in. Parking is only $4 a day (I think.) Our room has always had a fridge and microwave too, which is nice. And the walk to the parks is only about 10 minutes from the room to the turnstiles.

But you didn't ask for hotel opinions so I'll stop babbling...haha.

Thank you for the suggestions. Believe me, I looked at a lot of hotels! DD is 3 and DH and I figure we may not want to go to bed yet when we need to get her to bed, so we decided to look at some of the affordable suite options close by. DoubleTree was closest and had awesome reviews on Expedia and TripAdvisor. I don't mind walking and I know ART is available and maybe after the first day we will decide to use it, who knows!

JaneJetson, I have loved reading your trip report. I am debating starting one!

Oh yes...start one!! I'd love to read it. It's a fun way to pass the time until the trip. The excitement before a vacation is half of the fun.

That is so funny. I grew up in Mountlake Terrace (1965-1979) and came back to raise my own kids here (1987-now) and love it but I do recall the dark days of big hair. I think it was about 1986 that I got a perm. Ouch. I have very straight hair and decided I needed body. Pffft. Bad choice. Big, ugly perm curls. Of course we went through the late 70's with the Farrah Fawcett flip. Needed a can of hairspray to make it stay. Wow the effort put into our hair. Thanks for the memories.
