Getting AP room discount if AP not yet purchased?

I am planning to purchase an AP but have not yet done so. If an AP discount were to become available for our dates, would I be able to apply that to my already-reserved room by calling as long as I can actually show the pass when I check in? Or does the AP need to be already purchased at the time of asking for the discount to be applied?

I was able to call and inquire about AP room prices without an AP, but when it came time to book the actual room reservation, I was given the impression I had to purchase the AP before I could book (and so I did online, and then could see all of the AP discounts online instead of calling). But note - you don't have to ACTIVATE the AP to book. You will be expected to activate on or before the first day of the room ressie.

You can book an AP discount room prior to buying or activating an AP. But you will have to have an active AP upon checking in

That info, while "sort of true" is actually a bit outdated.

Many (most) guests now use MDE accounts and "on-line check-in" so they never actually go to a resort check-in desk.
That means there's no need (or opportunity) to "show" an AP to anyone.

Regardless, "Disney" will "know" if and when a guest has purchased and activated an AP because all of that info is active in the guest's MDE account.

I booked an AP discount room without an AP.

We arrived after midnight so I checked in without an AP.

I was told to come back to the front desk the following day when I had upgraded my ticket to show them my fancy AP.

If I hadn't returned with an AP they would have just charged my CC the difference between the AP discount and rack rate.

Your hurdle will be having to call to book the AP rate, without having an AP purchased (even unactivated)
Hard to price out trips or check availability when you have to call. So if possible, at least make the AP purchase via your MDE (as long as you aren't using a ticket to bridge, etc) so you can see the rates for yourself. Makes your life easier
I've had over 2 dozen AP stays, at least 1 night in almost every resort on property but for OKW and SSR, and in all those stays, have never, ever had to show my AP at check in or any other time during the stay. They've never asked.
It shows on MDE that I have an AP so I assume they have never had a need to see it.

Glad I saw this thread..... just posted a similar question on the Resort Board. Think I have my answer now... thanks.
