Getting annoyed with the people who "just don't get it"!

I know...some people truley don't get it!! I'm 19 and my dbf and I like to take trips to Disney....we have been together for 2 years and gone to Disney twice by ourselves and once with our families together. We always have so much fun at The World...that we don't want to plan trips anywhere else!! My family asks me" Why don't you guys do something different???" My answer would be.."Are you crazy???!!!". Maybe I'm just obsessed...which would obviously be the reason why I am on these boards all day lol. To me...its a healthy obsession and I love it!! Its fun for us to save our money for our trips and then see them happen. Our most recent trip was two weeks ago..and we hope to go again sometime next year. Hopefully to the Poly...but in the meantime my family is planning a surprise Christmas Trip at the GF and I can't wait!!!!!!! I just called and made our ADRs yesterday!!!

People either "get" the mouse, or they don't. :confused3 I've stopped trying to explain it in detail to "non-believers". Now when they ask why I want to go, I just say "because it makes me feel good" and I leave it at that! :sunny:

We can't wait to make our 1st trip to WDW; we're all "waving our arms, screaming and excited about it" but we're also learning not to talk to much yet about a trip that is over a year away. People don't want to hear about it or we get comments like "You're going to spend 10 days at WDW? Won't you get bored?" What??!!! :confused3

Everyone's idea of vacation is different which is fine, but what I don't understand is why their idea of vacation is right and mine is wrong. My boss gave us the use of his beach house for a week this summer, which was very generous of him, but he couldn't understand why we only stayed 3 nights. To my kids, being at the beach means camping, so off we went! :sunny:

As far as I am concerned, it is your friends and coworkers who are missing the boat. Half the fun of a Disney trip is the planning and the anticipation. Some people never get the magic of Disney, you do .... be glad.

About 3 years ago people finally quit asking what we do at Disney each trip. I think they think that we're going to MK every single time. For a lot of people, thats their concept of Disney. Dh & I love the Flower Power Concerts & the Wine Festival Concerts. Sometimes we'll hit the parks and not go on any rides & other times we'll do one or two of the new rides. We did Soarin' this past June. In the past we've gone with people who will feel the need to 'get their money's worth' by standing in every single line. To us, thats not much fun & probably why many people don't want to go back again.

Each of our minitrips this past year was totally different. On our first trip this year, we stayed at the Dolphin, did the Flower Festival concerts, closed down JellyRolls at 2am, & enjoyed a leisurely walk back to our resort. Another trip we spent the afternoon at Downtown Disney, enjoyed eating at V&A's for our anniversary & afterwards listened to the sax player/singer at POFQ until midnight. Several years ago, one of our favorite trips with our kids was staying at the Wyndham Palace, eating an early dinner at The Rainforest Cafe, & seeing Cirque. The next day we woke up late & went for lunch at Whispering Canyon. This trip we're kidless & going with a group to the Wine Festival. They heard we were going and wanted to join us. They've all bought rain ponchos - just in case. And I've printed up Steve Soares Epcot schedule so we'll know whats going on.

There are so many things to do there. We've done two tours: Keys to the Kingdom & Segway. We've spent a couple of days at AKL just hanging out, watching the animals & eating at Bomas. Then there's always Pleasure Island. The more I read about Disney the more I discover. Someday I'd like to do 'dinner with an imagineer'.

I think some of the problems people have with Disney is that they do NOT PLAN AHEAD! When my brother went to Disney with his family he said he didn't need to make any plans. They ended up staying at Haines City in a regular hotel. AS a result they got to MK at about noon, said they did not need to use fp, & complained about the size of the lines. I think they went on five rides all day. I had another relative go to Universal's IOA. THey went during spring break, on a Sunday & arrived at about 1pm. It rained at about 4pm & NO they didn't have rain ponchos!!! They all got soaked & had to leave the park. They complained that they only got on one ride & would never go again.

These boards have been a lifesaver for me. I started going to WDW in 1971 & I"ve learned more from these boards than I ever did going out on my own. I never would have had a sitdown dinner or stayed onsite if not for the advice I've gotten here.

For us, it is my family (DH's family is almost more into it than us, so the dilemma there as trying to convince them not come with us!!! But that is another story for another thread....)
We went on our honeymoon and went again in 2000 for the Millenium celebration. This will be our first trip back in almost 6 years :earseek: and is DS2's first trip!!!
We are already planning to go next December to see the World decorated for Christmas, in late Sept 2007 to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and in June 2008 to celebrate DS's 5th birthday.
My family looks at me as though I am crazy for wanting to go here so many times (they have never been and probably never will!)
So that is why I joined the DIS.... I love that you guys share my insane passion for WDW and will let me blather on about it for hours! :earsboy:

I'm working my last shift tonight before I leave on vacation next week (I'm an NICU RN).
OFF TOPIC (sorry) --> Kathy - I just want to thank you for the job you do. My baby was in a NICU for about a month earlier this year (she was two months early) and the NICU nurses are such amazing women. They really helped us get through a difficult time.

Hope you have a nice trip!!!

I'm a children's librarian and "my kids" love to hear about THE WORLD. When a child I know goes, I have to hear ALL about it. I just went in January, but am going back in December and no one but my DW knows (going solo this time, she likes THE WORLD, but doesn't want to go again so soon). I won't tell anyone because I don't want to hear them tell me I'm crazy. Anyway, it's actually really fun to have this exciting secret! One co-worker is going on her first trip tomorrow as a new DVC member and another one is going a month before I am, and I've been having a hard time keeping mum!

I quit telling my clients were I am going on vacation. They seem to think because you don't have kids yet why bother going to Disney. Because it's fun!!!!! Thankfully my DH understands how I feel about going to Disney. His mother is as crazy about it as I am. So he is already use to the need we have to go there.

I was basically ripped to shreds this week on another messageboard I post on. Someone mentioned that they don't get why adults wear any kind of Disney clothing, and from there it turned into a "make fun of adults who go to Disney parks" fest. I stood up for myself, but that didn't stop them. One of the women doing much of the ridiculing was my "friend" in real life, or so I thought. They couldn't understand why people would take their kids there EVERY YEAR, or even worse - people who go TWICE in one year (like me and DH)! Oh, the HORROR! I bet they don't even know that many people choose to get married at Disney. I think their heads would have spun.

When I was young, my grandfather would take us kids to Disney every summer. He would ask us where we wanted to go, and we would ALWAYS say "Disney!!" He once planned to take us to the Caribbean, and we asked if we could go to Disney instead. :teeth: We're that bad. LOL!

I mentioned to my aunt that we were going to DW again in February, since the parks were so crowded on our honeymoon. She said, "You know there ARE other places to vacation other than DW!" I just replied that we enjoy all the things to do, especially the wonderful dining options. She said, "Well, I was only there the one time I met you kids there." I asked her what she really knew about all the things to do at Disney... basically, she only knew of MK, Epcot, and MGM. She didn't even know that AK was there! She also would never pay the money we do for dining. When we vacation, we like to dine well. She'd be at McDonald's every day. She's never been to a Disney restaurant, so she has no idea how wonderful most of the food is and how great the theming is.

At work, they used to laugh when they asked where we were honeymooning. However, now that they see how much I know about Disney, they ask ME to help them plan vacations for their families! I often get this question: "We're thinking of taking the kids in July, where should we stay?" Then when I ask them if they can go in a slower season and explain crowds and show them about Disboards.... well, they seem to appreciate me more. ;)

In the end, it's not what other people think of us. It's what we enjoy, it's what we love, it's what we CHOOSE to do. I'm sad for those who will never get butterflies in their tummy when they walk into the MK and see the castle. I pity those who will never feel Disney Magic. I feel sorry for those who will never experience service on a Disney level.

Have a fantastic time, and MAKE SURE you go on Soarin'. This has got to be the best ride Disney has come up with yet. No upside down, spine twisting, gut churning, spinning in 6 different directions at once mind numbing, body jerking motions, just a fantastic Disney family ride. A must do! :Pinkbounc

Awww, thanks! :grouphug:

I feel more sorry for them. They've never experience the kind of magic that keeps us going back! And you know what they say about people who need to make fun of others... they're just hiding their own insecurities. :earboy2:

My friends don't get it. My family doesn't get it. And most of my husband's family doesn't get it. I don't have co-workers since I work from home.

When I told my mother that my stepdaughter was going to WDW for her honeymoon a few years back, my mother said that it was stupid, because DisneyWorld is for kids.

But I don't care, because in 48 hours, I'll be in DisneyWorld :cool1:

(That's why I like to hang around Disney message boards, because the folks there DO get it.)

I totally agree! Also loving disney dining. yum............

I have long ago stopped making excuses for my Disney trips. It's one of the places I love to go, I love and get the magic, and if someone else doesn't, that's fine with me. Different strokes, you know? On the other hand, if it's ok for us to love Disney, why isn't it ok for someone to love going to Vegas, the Shore, the Caribbean, or wherever? Why would you feel sorry for them if that's what they love to do? Not everyone gets the Disney magic, just as not everyone gets Vegas fever. I happen to get both, but it's no skin off my nose where someone wants to go on vacation, just as long as they enjoy it as much as I enjoy my trips. Sitting around on a beach all day and then going out for dinner may just be someone else's magic.

I am almost embarrassed to say...but I was once the one who wondered why my brother-in-law's family always went. Then we went on our first trip as a family and got hooked!!! Now others are asking me why I want to go back! This will be our 3rd trip since June of 2004. Now, that's all I do is think, plan, and dream Disney! :cloud9:

Believe me I understand! Mostly I get it from co-workers too. I'll start telling a story and they'll interrupt with "Is this another Disney World story?" and roll their eyes. Or I'll have someone say "I've been to Disney World and I'll never go back. We stayed at the nastiest Holiday Inn, had to drive 45 min. into any park, walk or wait to board a tram, spend all day in massive crowds for rides that are better at Six Flags, spend 5 million dollars on food and souvies, drive back to our room, only to get up and do it again the next day. No thanks." But I'm glad I believe in the magic. There's a part of me that feels whole when I'm at WDW and I feel sad for those people that will never get to feel like that with their "beach" vacations. :) Oh well, WDW is crowded enough, they can all stay home or go somewhere else. :)

Sure glad there are a tons of you people out there, now I know my wife and I aren't nuts!! As an added post, we're both over 50, been to WDW over 35 times and can't wait for every trip and wait for our reservation confirmation to arrive for the next to frame and put on the fridge. Always count the days, make agendas, which we barely follow and when our kids were little, now 26 and 33, we built our own Disney World game and planned our time in Disney by the minute.
