Getting a second job

I wouldn't sacrifice the little family time we had (nights and weekends) unless it was an absolute necessity. Sacrificing family time for a couple hundred bucks a month isn't worth it to me.

I have an interview today at Target at 4. I'm excited. We discussed what my expectations were and what they needed and we feel it will be a good fit. The woman was speaking as if I were already hired so that's good. I told her I'd like to do majority of my hours Saturday and Sunday mornings/afternoons. She said that would be perfect. I said maybe 1 or 2 nights during the week.

My kids sleep until noon on the weekends as it is! (for those that asked, they wont be home alone - my husband is home at night and on weekends)

I'm going into it with an open mind, since I don't NEED the job it will be easy enough to say this is just too much and be done but I'm hoping I do last the year. We'll see.

I was surprised to see their employee discount wasn't much at all. 10%. bummer.

OP-- make sure you tell them up front how late you're willing to work during the week. Closer to the holidays stores stay open later. At my part time job I told them I can't work past 10pm (normal close is 9 and we're out by 9:30). Last Christmas season they scheduled me to close at 11 and midnight during the week, I had to tell them to get someone else for those hours. I couldn't work that late then up at 6am for my full time job.

on my application I put 10PM at the latest, she asked me about that and said well we're open until 11PM I said I have to get up at 5:30 so 11PM wont work, she said they were sure they could work something out.

Stick by your guns regarding that. The first name the schedule shows you working until 11, remind her. They have a lot of people to schedule and sometimes they have someone else do the schedule so it might happen. If they schedule you once and you do it to "help out", they will continue and having to get up early the next day for your other job will be very difficult - trust me.

My husband works at target that 10% discount adds up. It also stacks with any other discounts like the 5% off for using a red card and the 5% off coupons you get for pharmacy rewards.

There is also the unofficial discounts... (Not stealing just realized that could sound like that) but because DH is friends with the people that mark things clearance they will let him know when things are go on clearance so he can get them right away. We have gotten some amazing deals like this.

DH paid only $25 for his Pebble smart watch for example. We got an entire box of notebooks after school started one year for what amounted to 3 cents per notebook. We still have some unused ones left.

Be ready for pressure to stay later sometimes... I know here that is an issue, because they have to let the high school students out by 10 PM (legal restrictions on how late they can work with school) but because of that the adults are generally needed. If the person who hired you and said it was ok isn't there (which is very likely most of the office people work during the day) you may find you're going to have to be willing to stick to your guns on that one.

this is exciting for me! I am big on couponing so knowing the clearance deals is going to be a huge savings for us. I do probably 90% of my grocery and household shopping at target so even 10% plus my 5% discount is going to save hundreds over a year for sure.

I will keep this in mind and try to be assertive without getting myself fired about this one. I wont last a week staying late.

Looks like I have to go buy myself some khakis =) They never even said I have the job, just "we pay $9.00/hr to start and your orientation is next Saturday" $9.00 makes me sad but I expected as much. I'll let you all know how this goes.

Just imagine being paid nine bucks an hour to live off of. Your eyes will be opened when you are working with others in that situation. Not exactly a bad thing.

I watch kids all day and a few years back got a pt evening job. It was great! So much so, that I decided to go back to school. I now take 3-4 classes a semester and still watch kids. My own kids are 4 and 7 and it does get hectic but, I know I am doing it for our future and that makes it worth it!

For a part time job, a smaller pay still helps! :)

I've been there. When my husband I first moved in together he made about $8/hr full time, I made around 8.50 working part time. Even with both of us working we had no car, no cable, no phone, studio apartment in a crappy neighborhood, minimal food. We've come a long way.

Congrats on your new job! :)

I actually applied to Target a few days ago and had an interview today -- they wanted to hire me, but ultimately couldn't offer me a position...my availability was 6am-3pm (with some evenings) and they wanted me to come in at 4:45am! I declined...and also declined a cashier position because that's literally the only job I won't do...so I was sad. :( I really wanted to work there.

3 weeks in---the last 2 weeks have been really tough. I am getting more hours than I expected but I also know after christmas this will go back down and be manageable again, I just have to hold out until then. The actual job is easy, almost mind numbing since my day job is somewhat stressful. Some things I've noticed, some people don't even "see" cashiers, I've had numerous people be on their phones the entire process and not even acknowledge my "hello, how are you" or thank you have a nice day. Rude.

Others have zero patience and are pretty mean by the time they get to you. I take it all in stride, I know everyone has a bad day once in a while.

So hopefully I make it through the rest of the holiday season and then see how it goes from there.

If that is most of what you have hit you have been lucky so far.

DH has had several people scream at him over the last few days because the store is out of hot ticket items for Christmas. I can't even count the number of times he has "Ruined Christmas" you know like he has any responsibility for ordering at all.

Working at target would be tough if you won't cashier. The reason they wanted you in at 4:45 is I think the flow team (the ones that unload the trucks in the morning) are the ONLY ones that do not have to be trained to cashier. That is where they start almost everyone.

My husband is never scheduled as a cashier however he very rarely has a shift where he doesn't have to to cover someones break or provide backup when the cashiers are busy or something during that shift. Sometimes he has to do that several times in his shift, and then gets "spoken to" by management for not getting his own work done.
