Getting a discounted AP with resale DVC

As others have mentioned (on numerous occasions), there are a few resale members who slip through the cracks when initially purchasing the Sorcerer Pass, but once renewal time comes up, they absolutely won't be renewing them. Sure, you can let it expire and roll the dice on getting another "new" one, but to each their own...
I am resale only and researched this a lot recently. It seems like the system tightened up a lot over the last nine months or so. I didn’t even bother trying and just bought an Incredipass.

Yeah, you might get lucky and slip under the radar on the new purchase, but because you can only renew over the phone with DVC MS, and they verify that you have a qualifying membership before they renew it, the odds go down to zero on renewal.

wow thats impressive. Did DVC MS renew the pass or how did you accomplish it?

Assuming you are not a FL resident?

Not a FL Resident, we already had the Sorcerer's pass and just called MS and they renewed. Was pretty cut and dry to do. I did wonder if they'd renew but they did.

I get the fact that some direct members don't like it, but here's my thoughts. Obviously , I'm biased.

But Disney got their money from the original purchaser of the DVC contract which was sold at full retail.

They then get money on the transfer.

Resale owners pay the same Maintenance fees every year that a direct member pays.

The only argument that would apply about "costing" Disney money would be the fact that if you couldn't buy resale you'd have to purchase direct. But then again, real estate laws allow the resale of DVC.

For us personally, we were 30 seconds from purchasing a 200 pt Direct Riviera contract in March of 2020. However, COVID had literally begun in full the week we were there and the unknown made us stop as we were literally about to sign. So a few years later we just bought resale (not riviera), but we didn't know about resale in 2020 anyway.

So, if MS at times will renew or give a sorcerer's pass to a resale member I guess I don't see that impacts Disney at all.

Direct still gets quite a few benefits that resale members don't.

When was your resale purchased? Are you sure you aren’t grandfathered in?
The OP (@bdrex28) states "For us personally, we were 30 seconds from purchasing a 200 pt Direct Riviera contract in March of 2020. However, COVID had literally begun in full the week we were there and the unknown made us stop as we were literally about to sign. So a few years later we just bought resale (not riviera), but we didn't know about resale in 2020 anyway." So not grandfathered in. I agree with the points they make in their reasoning for getting the renewal, it's on Member Services to check or ask if it's a resale contract.

You never know…sometimes details on message boards aren’t the full story.

I never attempted this as resale only as I knew I didn’t qualify, but if someone gains a discount they don’t qualify for, it doesn’t really matter to me personally. If I were Disney, I’d want it checked, as selling more direct points is a company goal. But it doesn’t matter to me as an individual.

I don't have a problem that you got the pass and have been able to renew but just remember that pass has nothing to do with the dues you are paying.
The dues are for servicing the resort that you own at and have nothing to do with the parks or discounts that you would get at a shop.

Mine was interesting when I first got the Sorcerer's pass. I was calling members service for a room request. We at that point had bought tickets for our upcoming trip and had 3 trips planned on reservations with DVC (I bought a loaded contract). Anyway, the MS cast member mentioned that we had three trips and asked if I'd be interested in an annual pass as it would save us money. I said sure, so she credited my tickets we'd already purchased for an upcoming trip and applied it to sorcerer's passes. Didn't know anything different until later that year as again we were pretty new to owning and read about the sorcerer's pass here and how it's supposed to be only for direct members and not resale. Fast forward in time a year later and my app told me we could renew, but I couldn't do it on the app. I called and they renewed it. To be honest, I didn't expect they would and we'd get a different pass, the incredipass I believe. But again, they renewed it no problem.

My guess is it depends on the cast member.

Pretty simply story.

I also have a Disney Chase card. Honestly though, showing the annual pass in the app is easier than carrying around our CC while at Disney. I think the only thing sorcerer gives that the chase card doesn't is 20% off merchandise rather than 10% off like the CC gives. Truth is, I think we have bought maybe one merchandise item which was a hoodie at cake bake for our daughter and I don't think we got any discount because they are 3rd party. Well, we do always buy my father the box of taffy, although it's getting harder to find :)

Every situation is different, we rarely if ever buy stuff in the shops.

I get what you're saying, I'm just saying on a higher level picture from Disney's viewpoint in saying only direct members can buy the sorcerer's pass now. Meaning as a direct member you paid retail for your contract. the person I bought the contract from someone who also paid retail (at least in my case because you can see it on the state listings when the transfer is done). So the contract itself was not originally discounted and sold for retail

Maybe I'm not explaining well.

Anyway, next year we don't plan on renewing as we're taking the year off so I am pretty sure that's the end of the AP for us for awhile.

The Chase card doesn't supply anywhere near the discounts that an AP or DVC provide and you have to use the card as opposed to be being able to use discounted gift cards on top of the discount but that is not the point.

I understand what you are trying to say and I get that but if you want to point out that someone already paid full price to someone in this case what about using a different example.

If you bought an Audi that include free maintenance, tires and inspections for life and then sold it to me then somethings would transfer such as the ability to get from point A to Point B. I am not getting the tires and maintenance as it may have been for life but that would be for the life of your ownership of the car.

The same thing is happening with DVC. That initial person gets all of the Membership Extras along with being able to have a place to stay in deluxe accomadations. When you sell your membership to me all I can do is have the ability to stay in deluxe accommodations.

Both examples are great as you save and still get to drive a nice car or experience deluxe accommodations while saving money you just don't get to experience everything and that is ok too.

If you feel like you are missing out you can always trade in the Audi for a new car or your resale contract for a direct one down the line if those experiences are important to you.

Interesting you chose Audi. A few years ago, we bought my wife a 2-year-old Audi SQ7. The Premium Service transferred to us as the new owner :)

I realize you posted this quite a while ago but I didn't see it the first time and someone has resurrected this thread.

I didn't know it had changed to only be able to do renewals over the phone.
We have been able to been able to renew ours in the parks before at the guest service near liberty square.
Granted it's been such a long time ago though that I don't remember if that was still the "Gold" or when they had switched to the "Sorcerer" but at one time it was possible but of course your timing would have to work out as well unless you were a local.

As someone with a lot of customer service experience…they probably felt it wouldn’t be worth the potential fight since you’d already had it.
I've also worked a lot in customer service, and I would assume my coworkers had already properly verified their eligibility.

I don't know how it is checked, but if it's opening up another box/window/program/app/database etc then I'm not going to bother.

the person I bought the contract from someone who also paid retail (at least in my case because you can see it on the state listings when the transfer is done).

@eticketplease - beat me to the punch on this one. I was going to use free unlimited supercharging on any recent Tesla purchases as an example. It's only for the original purchaser and not passed on when you sell the car.

All that said, Im not bothered by a DVC-ND owner getting a discount they aren't eligible for if they happen to slip through the cracks or there's a glitch. I've been in those shoes before (non-Disney), and sometimes you get lucky.

The only Membership Extras I would definitely throw my arms up about are space limited things like Moonlight Magic, lounge access, Membership cruises etc. I'd make sure DVC fixes that mistake fast.

That would have had to have been before 8/1/2023 and it would have had to be Certified Pre Owned.

My example was if I purchased it from you and I'm assuming you wouldn't pay to make it certified to sell to me :)

I think it was in 2021 but it wasn't certified, a client was a Mercedes dealer and had it. She no longer has the vehicle and moved to another German brand. We only found out it transferred when we took it to Audi to get a silly sun visor clip that had broken and the dealership service team informed us.

back to the AP.

We're DVC, We're Disney Chase card holders and we have the Sorcerer AP until May.

For us; talking my personal feelings here, there is nothing that DVC Direct provides me that I care about. I wouldn't even have ever gotten the AP two years ago without the Cast Member bringing it up and crediting our park tickets towards the purchase.

But again, as has been talked about ad nauseum throughout the boards over years I'm sure, for us Direct is pretty pointless and I'm quite satisified with the fact I saved tens of thousands over what I almost purchased in March of 2020. Other than that would have been direct Riviera. There are MANY who love the extras you get with Direct. Personally, for us, it does nothing for me that I really care about. We don't cruise, we live too far for moonlight magic to really matter to us, we don't care about the merchandise discounts or the lounges.

Honestly, that's the best thing. If you want to be DVC you have two options; Direct or Resale. Both are great for different people.
