Get in Shape & Lose Weight for August 2014 Group

This is how I make my idea of Stir Fry. I'm kitchen challenged so not the best cook but my DH likes it. A large deep skillet, I add a little canola oil if I'm cooking chicken, then add the cubed chicken. Cook through then I add frozen veggies and cook until it's all warmed through. Not a lot of fresh veggies here right now and I've read frozen are the next best thing. If I'm just doing veggies then I just spray oil the pan. Roasting veggies: I pre heat oven to 400. Spray cooking oil in a roasting pan. Cut up assorted fresh veggies. Carrots, summer squash, whatever you like. Drizzle with canola oil and sprinkle with spices. Stir to coat. Put pan in oven and cook for about 30 minutes or until veggies are cooked through. Stir a few times during the 30 minutes. You can do the same thing with just potatoes which I do quite often. Let me know if I left anything out. Another thing I've been doing is buying a big container of nonfat yogurt. I scoop out a 1/4 of a cup, cut up some fresh strawberries and add that too it and then 2T of Special K lowfat granola. Makes that 1/4 seem much bigger. I also eat it out of a small berry bowl so it seems like a lot.

Thanks! I use mostly frozen veggies too!

I have a treadmill here at home and keep saying yeah I'll do that but then when we finish our activities for the day after work there's very little motivation left! Can anyone else relate???

Definitely. I have a stationery bike collecting dust. I'd be happy to lose 10lbs. so I could finally weigh less than I did when I was 9 months pregnant!

Good job! I wish I could say the same, I will do better tomorrow!

I didn't have a great day either. Lunch wasn't great and dinner was .. Urgh Im actually a little embarrassed by it. But we're gonna look at the positives! I finally had a good breakfast (an oatmeal thingy instead of a pop tart :scared: ), and I went to a movie and only had one pretzel bite. And I worked out. Is there anything positive you did yesterday? Let's focus on that! Plus it's the start if a new day!

Now that I know you made it, I'm even more impressed! It's beautiful. :)

Thank you very much! :beach:

So I finally have time to sit down and introduce myself. There's so much I could write, but I'll keep it brief. (-ish)

I'd like to lose somewhere around 20-40 pounds (OK, upper number is eventually) and go down 2-3 dress sizes. But really I want to feel better. I've had some health issues over the past few years, and I really think getting some weight off will help me with those alot.

I usually go "all out" when I start and try to do everything right. And I keep it up for a while too. But then life and stress etc comes into the picture and things slowly go back to where I started habit-wise, which a little while later gets me back to where I was body-wise. So I'm going to approach this a little different this time. (You know what they say: the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.) I'm going to make weekly goals and add on to my previous ones. I'm a control freak and will probably try to do more than just my 1-2 goals, but I hoping as my motivation slacks off, just focusing on a few things will get me over the hump.

I'm also going to be kind to myself. I haven't felt well for about a year or so. I think if I start like I'm battling myself into submission, it's just not going to work. I'm 45 and I really need to work with myself instead of against it.

So this week my main goal is to get my morning down. I'm lucky enough to have a chunk of time between when my kids go to school and I leave for work. So I'll be doing an old walk fit video I have (about 30 minutes) and when it gets warm enough (will this winter ever be over?) transfer that over to a walk with the dog. I also need to figure out what I'm going to eat for breakfast. In the summer/fall I was making smoothies and that worked out really well. I used coconut milk, chia seeds, rice protein powder, and a variety of fruits, berries and even spinach depending on what I was in the mood for. And I felt really good with that. But I just can't drink a cold drink in the morning until it gets a little warmer. So I gotta figure out an alternative until it warms up a little. Hmmm...

That actually sounds good! I am horrible at tracking/calorie counting! Im going to look into it, thank you!

I also want to work more on how my body FEELS and how I FEEL about my body, more than shedding the pounds. I tend to beat myself up quite a bit because Im also an "all in" type of girl. I do really well and feel great and then life gets in the way and Easy becomes the best way. and more than anything thats what I want to change! It will only be beneficial to the rest of my family because Mama Bear usually leads the pack ;)

Anyways, my goals this week are to drink much more water. I am not a sugary drinks person, only soda I can tolerate is ginger ale, but I can go hours without drinking anything at all. I am setting reminders to my phone every hour to drink water! Hopefully it will help! Lol my second goal is to start taking the stairs at work, school, etc. Sometimes its hard for me because I like to wear makeup and its the worst getting all oily in the face but it will have to do!

I love this thread already!!!!! :)

I was always approaching my "dieting" much the same way... I posted a little bit about this in my PTR this morning - so I thought I would copy and paste my reply here too, since it fits - hope you all don't mind. :thumbsup2

**********************************************************

I feel like I am constantly analyzing this, and trying to find the solution. The best I have come up with is this... Any other time I've lost weight, I have done it with the recommendations of Conventional Wisdom... So, I cut calories (sometimes drastically) and do excess cardio. I do this for as long as my body will sustain this way of life - usually it's about 4-5 months... And usually I can lose a good 50 lbs in that time. But once I hit that 4-5 month mark... I am STARVING - after months of not eating properly - and I am HUNGRY... So, I eat, eat, eat... and eat some more... Phew - no longer hungry - but I am eating too much... So I gain, gain, gain and feel sorry for myself - but I am hungry. Before I know it - it's all back on... And I feel so guilty for losing control and I get down on myself. Before I know it - I've gained even more. I don't want to work out, because I am still exhausted, but now I have all this excess weight on top of it all. It's a vicious cycle - it truly is.

So, then I went looking everywhere to find the answers... How can I lose weight by eating as much as possible? How can I excercise with the least amount of TIME effort? Because this time, I wanted my losses to be maintainable... EVERYONE says they are doing a "lifestyle change" - but the lifestyle they are trying to change to, is not maintainable for the duration of the rest of their lives. If a person has to have "cheat days" to get through their new "lifestyle" - then it's not really a lifestyle change...

Which brought me on this never-ending quest to find the answers for me - which would fit my life and how I live it... Essentially - I didn't want to change my lifestyle, I wanted my new "lifestyle" to fit who I truly was, and I wanted to achieve it with very little effort. And that's how I found the Primal way of eating...

I LOVE meat - I always have... In my previous lifestyle changes - I've always felt encouraged to eat as little lean meat as possible... It was awful! Now, I get to eat as much meat as I want to... LURVE meat! In previousl lifestyle changes, I've been encouraged to eat as many steamed veggies covered in chemical imitation butter products - YUCK! Now, I eat roasted vegetables fried in (all natural) bacon grease or butter - YUMMY! In previous lifestyle changes, I was encouraged to eat "boxed fiber bars" and the like - with God only knows what in them... Now, I make my own - and WOW are they yummy - I do not miss those bars in a box one little bit. I just love, love, love this food... I love making it, I love eating it, it tastes wonderful, and my body loves it. It's all natural - there are no chemicals in it, my food doesn't come from a box, can or jar and I don't feel guilty ever. I don't have cheat days, I don't need cheat days... Because who wants to cheat with eating chemically laden food out of a box, when I can eat the real thing? It tastes waaaay better.

So, is this truly a "lifestyle change" - yes, I think so. Can I truly eat this way for the rest of my life and enjoy it. Yes, I can. Do I want to? Yes, I do. I think, when you find the lifestyle that fits how you want to live your life and how you enjoy living your life, then it's really not a lifestyle change any more, it's living in harmony with yourself.

OK - sorry for the huge long reply - and I hope I didn't sound rude - I am just so passionate about truly finding what works for you... and when that is found, only then, can it be sustainable.

Well, yesterday was a dinner-out-and-theater day, and despite eating at a FANTASTIC restaurant (and eating a good bit there), I came in under my recommended calories. I did walk uphill on the treadmill for 60 minutes before I left for the city. So I'm proud I didn't let the day just go to heck because I had fun plans. :)

Well yesterday was not the greatest day for me i totally went off track. Today is a different day and i am going to follow through the whole day. Weekends can be tough for me. I plan ahead for the week so thats easy, maybe i need to plan for the weekends too. Dont really know why i dont. Either way todays a different day, And i am back at it!

Welcome! I'm dusting my elliptical off today :)

Well said! It makes sense that it will work better if it is something you can live with forever.

I have more trouble on the weekends too. It's when we get together with friends or I'm so tired from working and cooking all week I just want to take out. Planning ahead for the weekends definitely will help.

Walked 30 minutes on the treadmill yesterday morning and tracked my food in take for the day. That is until 6pm when we had friends come over. Then it was a free for all. :) Ate, drank and was merry. Back on track this morning but there are cookies in the pantry whispering my name so I just might need to find a way for them to be worked into my food schedule.

DH bought me a Fit Bit Zip which I will start using tomorrow. We'll see how that goes.

Good luck everyone!

Yesterday was the annual fundraiser for an organization I volunteer with, so I spent 3 hours on my feet setting up a raffle table & dining room. Does that count? And the dinner was fairly healthy (the apple crisp & two beers I had after dinner, not so much). Maybe I'll hit the bike tonight?

Thank you so much for the idea! This morning I put a tbsp of chia seeds in about the same amount of warm water and and set it aside. I cut up half an apple and added oats, some water, a small of amount of brown sugar (don't think I needed it though; will try without tomorrow), and cinnamon. I microwaved that for a few minutes, then added the chia seeds and about 1/2 cup yogurt. This was really good!

I love smoothies! I usually add some hemp seed hearts, soaked oatmeal, spinach, banana, green tea with some raw honey and frozen peaches.I use my ninja personal sized cup so it's perfectly proportioned. 3-4 servings fruits and veggies, high in protein, high in a good source of carbs, antioxidants and it provides enough sweetness to satisfy my ridiculous sweet tooth without a ton of calories. When I do oatmeal I use medjool dates to sweeten it. Chop up some apples, grate a bit of carrot, add some chia or hemp seed hearts (or both). I also love to use spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, cloves, and a bit of salt. For me, I love baked goods. I mean I REALLY love them. So I try to make sure I use natural sweetners/unrefined as much as possible that way when I indulge in other areas I'm not going over my calories. :goodvibes

I also wanted to say a small word of caution for drinking tons of water. To clarify, for most people I think drinking water is going to be fine and healthy, especially if you're working out alot. But I was having some weird symptoms and for me it turned out to be too much water added to it rather than helped it.

On my last well visit to my doctor, my blood sodium concentration turned out to be really low. It's supposed to be 135 to 145 mEq/L; mine was 127. From what I read 125 is considered serious. So I drank less water and my last reading was 135, so my doctor is not doing anything at the moment. It's very confusing and I'm not sure what's causing this. I was being very careful about how much salt I ate too due to my high blood pressure, so I may have been taking in too little salt, or my body was retaining the fluid I was drinking making the overall concentration low. The main issue with this is brain swelling (very scary), so I was having the symptoms I just didn't know what was causing it. The symptoms are weakness, fatigue, headache, nausea and vomiting (didn't have this, but my stomach bothered me whenever I ate), muscle cramps, confusion, irritability. I just didn't make the connection because I thought it was simple PMS and/or pre-menaposal symptoms. I was also have trouble with focusing my eyes. Again, figured I was dealing with middle 40s eye stuff. I have been drinking less water for about a month now and feel so much better. Like I can actually focus on a task and have some energy. But I think it's a band-aid. The real problem is I need to drop some pounds and get healthy. Now I have the energy to do so.

I can't convince my Dr to check my sodium levels - I've been told it's highly unlikely I'd be too low b/c salt is in everything. I tried to explain that since I make ALL my own food, salt is barely in anything. Still wouldn't check. :confused3 I was passing out from BP plummeting when I changed positions. All your symptoms you listed above are like mine. So I've been making a point of adding salt to my plate at dinner - and about once a week I have a bowl of chips. Things have been so much better since then! Salt, in the right proportions is very important.

I was feeling a lot better last summer. I thought that I was have issues with food. I noticed my tongue burning after vinegar and began to equate it with maybe food allergies or sensitivities. (I know, I sound like a wreck. I'm not a complainer though or a hypochondriac type. I usually just deal and get on with my day. I'm too busy and have too many other people that need me in my life. My doctor scolded me.. nicely.. told me if I didn't take care of myself I couldn't help anyone.) I know I'm allergic to eggs and tomatoes. I also have mold allergies and because last spring was so wet (we literally had hundreds of mushrooms growing in our lawn), these started spilling over into reactions to food. I went on a elimination diet. I cut back to really simple foods. I had a smoothie for breakfast, a salad for lunch and a dinner. I basically had only chicken and fish, brown rice or quinoa, and any fruits and vegetables except for nightshade plants or anything like mushrooms. I stayed away from coffee (eek) and condiments (vinegar). Used lemon and olive oil or coconut oil. I didn't starve and I lost 15 pounds in 15 days. That's how much water I was retaining. My blood pressure went to normal almost instantly. I felt better. I was terrified to go into phase two where you start adding things back in because I didn't want to feel bad again.

WE went Gluten-free just over 4 years ago. It was the best thing ever! Our oldest was having random allergic reactions to different foods, once going gluten-free that (as well as a pile of other things) stopped. Now we're also corn-free, and b/c our newest baby has different sensitivities, I'm currently also dairy-free and tree-nut free. Eating is interesting at times, but the difference in health is amazing. Though I am REALLY looking forward to adding cheese back into my diet. I found the first year, and vacation the hardest to maintain, but after one successful trip, it was much easier. Disney can accommodate so many things. :goodvibes

I have found that within ten pounds of your weight, or if you want to lose even though you are in normal range BMI, that you need a faster metabolism. I eat five times a day, about 300 calories each time. I shoot for high protein and high fiber. I eat eggs, oatmeal, apples, chicken breast, Greek yogurt, salads with minimal dressing@ 15 calories per tablespoon serving. For the main entrees, i use nutrisystem.

When i plateaued near my ideal weight- it took exercise in the endurance type. I currently walk 5 miles or 10000 steps a day. I do not run because i do not want to hurt my knees and have a lower quality of life in older ages.

Yes! I highly recommend the and diet for this reason. It's all about eating - a lot. It's just changing what/how you eat. It makes sure to add things like ice cream or other 'fun' foods each day so you never have to feel you're giving up something. Expending 300 calories more than intake allows you to loose weight at an optimal level. If you're exercising too much, you're body retains. So start by increasing metabolism as Disney BEfore Sally said, but then be aware you also need to increase calories once you begin working out more strenuously. Otherwise you'll plateau and possibly begin storing again.

Will do...thanks!

I did WW a couple years ago and here are some lifestyle changes that I learned to make (and have since slipped away from...time to get back to it):

1- don't drink your calories (so, water water water...and I do unsweet tea and coffee with splenda though I have heard that fake sweeteners can cause you to gain weight too, so moderation)
2- no eating after 7pm
3- small portions (what I did was take 2 full meals and break them up throughout the day and that's all I'd eat...salad here, fruit there, meat something here, side type thing there...eating 1 thing at a time- several times throughout the day). And if I'd go out for a meal, I'd never finish the entire plate.
4- I allowed for 1 splurge day a week where I might eat that cupcake...or a burger (burgers are my tough thing to give up)...or get a cocktail. My splurge day was always a weekend day.
5- choose lots of raw diet type things (raw veges, fruit, nuts...)...and poultry and seafood. Minimize sugar intake.

Refined sugar is a big one for me. It was my hardest thing to give up. I started by going to evaporated cane sugar - it's so flipping expensive I didn't want to use it :rotfl2: for baking I use honey or maple syrup. I love caffeine, but really dislike coffee. I'm more a caffeinated dessert in a glass kind of person ;) but when trying to be healthy this left me not sure what to do. SO now I use maple syrup in an americana. It sweetens enough, with fewer calories than sugar and none of the negative side effects of artificial sweeteners (headaches being a huge one for me).

I didn't have a great day either. Lunch wasn't great and dinner was .. Urgh Im actually a little embarrassed by it. But we're gonna look at the positives! Today I actually started a work-out! :yay: Admittedly, I didn't get very far into it, but I had legs and abds down, and that's better than yesterday with nothing at all! :goodvibes

Thank you very much! :beach:

This sounds very much like the journey we've been on as a family! Though primal/paleo wasn't working for me long term. I did find after about 4(ish) months I was back to feeling icky. So now we do a combo paleo/Mediterranean and it works better. Paleo is very low in carbs even good carbs. And this hurt our family. So we have carbs in the form of sweet potatoes and other veggies. We have papadums and beans when we want. But mostly we eat veggies and fruit. We're still pretty high in protein, but it's mostly fish, beans, and chicken. We have bacon about once a week or so. We still love our red meat, but we only have it about once a month now and we're better for it.

But this is why it's important for each individual to figure out what works for their body. A dietician friend of ours helps ppl figure out the best diet for their unique self. I really think this is key. My body has it's own shape, and what works for my shape and genetics wouldn't work for someone else. But too many people lose sight of this and try to change their body from what ever shape it's meant to be into a shape someone else has determined would be better. :worried:

If it's movement that is not your normal, lifting, shifting weight that isn't your ordinary, then yes it counts! Find something you love and do it. If your bike is fun, then get on and ride!

I find workouts boring. So I lift children :cool1: lift and toss 20lb child 10 times in a row, take a break and do it again. Do the same with the 40lb child. And when I can do it with the 65lbs child, then I'm doing good. They are great at pushing me to lift more, get stronger and are the most intense trainers ever! "Again mommy! Again" :rotfl2: I just make sure to keep my body in good form, tummy firm, core straight, side lift with a twist. Do it in a lunge for added work-out.

Get creative ;)

OMG, so DH is back from a weekend of ice fishing (a hobby I will never understand LOL!). I noticed that ever since he got home all he wants to do is feed me. I'm not kidding. A piece of chocolate, tortilla chips, soda, for dinner.. DH:"do you want a taco".. Me: "Were having lasagna".. DH:"Do you want a taco too?" .. Me: "Are you insane."

OK, so he's Italian (northern) and eats anything he wants and likes to feed other people and he missed me and he's trying to be nice.. but OMG just stop already. LOL :sad2:

Yesterday we walked two lengths in the mall shopping for shoes...I hate the mall and I hate shopping for shoes lol! I left the mall without shoes after two hours though having walked a fair bit I felt ok. Last night went to crap with a night out at the pub for a friends birthday. Drinks, fried bar food and cake. But I was sensible too.

Today I walked through a home and garden expo for 5 hours then proceeded to go grocery shopping after. My feet and gluts hate me tonight lol, but it's the pushing force to start on the treadmill again tomorrow. I'd like to do mornings but since I already have to get up at 530 to get to work on time I will have to wait til after work :-/

I start weighing in tomorrow morning! Here's to all of us! We can do it!!!! Good luck!!!
