German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has warned the US to back away from the possibility of military action against Iran over its nuclear programme.

"Let's take the military option off the table. We have seen it doesn't work," Mr Schroeder told Social Democrats at the rally in Hanover, to rapturous applause from the crowd.

Mr Schroeder said it remained important that Iran did not gain atomic weapons, and a strong negotiating position was important.

"The Europeans and the Americans are united in this goal," he said. "Up to now we were also united in the way to pursue this."

Mr Schroeder reiterates his views in an interview to be published Sunday in the German weekly Bild am Sonntag, labelling military action "extremely dangerous".

Meanwhile, the UK has made it clear that it has ruled military action out as an option as far as Iran is concerned whilst Spain and France appear to be issuing the same rumblings.

Analysts have gone on to theorise that the threat of military action may in fact encourage the development of stronger weapons from a defensive standpoint. The Iranian press notes that their neighbour was recently attacked and remains "defiant".

Although he only has three years left of his eight years of terror, I really, really hope that Bush does not alienate the great country that is America from, erm, everyone else any further.

That being said, Iran is somewhat barbaric, practising executions and "an eye for an eye" punishments which include maiming.
