German Restaurant Question

Do the German restaurants generally have pretzel bread? There was a German bakery in Orlando that had the best pretzel bread but I haven't been able to find any since then. We just moved to GA and there is a German restaurant in town and I would go there just for the bread if they have it!

I don't know the answer to this question, but I LOVE the pretzel bread at Biergarten in Epcot!! YUM!!! I could make a whole meal out of the pretzel bread, potato leek soup, and a beer! :)

I don't remember if ours have salt & pepper on the table or not. I'm thinking that they do, but I don't use it. I know it's good etiquette in restaurants to taste your food, then put salt or pepper on it as you wish. I don't think I was ever told not to use it though.

I grew up PA Dutch, so German food was always big in my house. I like ketchup, but I don't use it nearly as much as I use mustard  I put mustard on everything, my boyfriend thinks I'm disgusting. But I have the double whammy of being from PA (where yellow mustard is king) and of German descent!! Oh man, give me a good Brat, some sauerkraut, and good mustard, I'm in heaven!!!

I love that German restaurants are getting free publicity from this thread. Yey The Dis! :goodvibes

I've lived near Heidelberg for the last 10 years. I've lived in 5 different states and visited a lot more over the last 30 years. Regional differences are not nearly as marked as they once were.
I double-checked with my hubby, (born and bred in Hessen), and he said my post was spot on. Course you're going to find own recipes the family likes better, that's normal. Do you know which bought Currywurst sauce they meant? We've never seen it in a jar.
When you next go to a Kirmes or the Christmas markets, look for the busiest Bratwurst stands. The condiment tubs have spouts and a handle you push down to pump them out. You probably have to know what you're looking for to recognise them and they're always surrounded by people waiting for their turn so you probably missed them.

Thanks for answering--sorry it took me so long to get back to you--I jsut got back from 4 days of "camping" (meaning we slept in a tent but did not spend our days in the wild;)) in Bavaria (BTW we ate out a lot--took note and only saw salt and pepper at breakfast:confused3 Had fast food a couple of times at Legoland and ketchup was 30 cents a packet (as was mayo and mustard).

I totally know the stands with the pump your own at fests like the Wiehnachtsmarkt but was thinking about imbisses and otehr more permanent locals. Also, mostly when we go out ketchup is brought out as a serving on the plate or in a small bowl. When we ask for more there is nearly always a charge for the extra on the receipt:confused3
Funny that we are right in the same area. Nice to know I have neighbors online:goodvibes
