My 7 year old just came home with next report she needs to do-its on Germany and all their Christmas customs etc. We looked those up together online and she has some notes she took on various things about that and she is calling her cousin who happens to be living in Germany right now for more about Germany-but the second part of the project is that she needs to cook a dish from that country for their Christmas around the world party in Dec. Now this dish will be served to other 2nd graders so it has to be something that they would actually eat, not like saurbraten (sp??). And it also has to be something not to complicated because its something that the parent has to help the child with but NOT do all the cooking for them....any ideas????

How about cookies? At Christmas a favorite are spice cookies. They're usually very thin and crisp with a more spicy flavor than gingerbread but one that kids would probably like. You could just substitute a gingerbread cookie recipe.

Pretzels, gingerbread cookies (or make an edible gingerbread house...), stollen...
My Grandma was German and she always made the BEST cookies...

Now I am hungry!

10 Minute German Chocolate Pie

Sweet chocolate is melted and combined with tangy cream cheese and whipped topping in this rich pie. Great to take to a potluck.

Ingredients:

• 4 ounces german sweet chocolate
• 1/3 cup milk
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 8 ounces cool whip or other prepared whipped; topping, thawed
• 1 prepared graham cracker pie crust

Method:

Melt chocolate with 2 tablespoons of milk over low heat or in the microwave, stirring until chocolate is melted and smooth. Beat sugar into cream cheese. Add remaining milk and chocolate mixture. Beat until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spoon into crust, and chill until firm, usually overnight.

Kilbasa just cut itinot rounds and stick a toothpick into them. That is the heritage that my kids always pick. I don't think I would go with the saurkraut(sp sorry headache) But in 2nd grade they will try the kilbasa.

WEll, I have a second grade Girl Scout troop and a father brought in German Chocolate Brownies and they polished them off!!! I was worried they wouldn't care for the coconut, but not one of them noticed!! I can't help you with the ingredients, they were from a grocery store, but I am sure you could just use a box brownie mix and then add the topping on........

Never mind, I don't like my idea anymore. Go with chocolate.

Black Forest Cake. How can you go wrong for kids with chocolate cake, whipped cream and cherries?

Pastry chef here!

German chocolate isn't really a German food. It was named after an American who worked for the Baker's Chocolate company with the last name of German.

I think stollen or a black forest cake (maybe cupcakes) would be good.

I am not German..but my MIL is ...and she doesn't share recipes. BUT
I have good recipes for
Black forest Cake(and it is fairly easy)

Others I have recipes for are
Spitzbuben (almond/oat cookies with jam-they are good)
Armer Ritter (poor knight-like french toast, but with cinnamon sugar)

Also Pretzels are German...you could find a good recipe for that somewhere.

Weinersnitzel is not German but Austrian.
One of my favorite treats was whipped cream in sugar cones. So good.
Spaetzle is good also as well as any of the wurst. Bratwurst, Weisswurst, Knockwurst, etc. If you have a German Deli in your area you will be set. Also German potato salad, or potato pancakes.
Kielbasa not German.

My 7yo is taking cooking classes and they learned how to make pretzels and Rote Gruetze (Red Fruit Pudding) in the first class. It's really good and very easy.

If you want the recipe, PM me. My son loved it and has made it at home since then.

I agree. Rote Grütze is easy. You could also do bread with cheese or bread with nutella. They eat a lot of that over there. I was an exchange student. And yes the german chocolate thing is very cheesy.

Thanks for all the ideas!! I will run them all past my daughter and see what she wants to do!!
