Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Tom didn't have colon cancer, Kathy, so I don't have any experience with it, but some people survive. I knew a lady that had to have a bag for a time and then she was able to have her functions restored internally again. It just depends on how bad it is. I'm so sorry he's had to face this horrible illness. We need a cure!

I worked all day yesterday and today it's gorgeous. I'll be showing 7 houses to my dear client who loves to chat about every detail so the ankle is scared!:scared1: We sold his house before the sign went in the ground to a friend of a neighbor. Gotta find a new one quick! You all have a wonderful day. J-P is off to Tahoe to a cabin to snowboard for 2 days. Travis Rice is giving him a new snowboard every year when the new designs come out. Maybe he'll be more cautious so as not to scratch up the new board??:rotfl:

Thank you Lisa. I wasn't sure which kind he had. It is a good feeling to know that it may be possible for him to have normal functions again. I just feel so bad for him, and want to help in some way. He loves pumpkin, so I gave them a couple pumpkin rolls right before his surgery. They froze one for him so he would have it afterward. I also made him some pumpkin bread (thanks Robin). He has lost so much weight, he is just skin and bones. They are trying desperately to get him to gain weight. I think maybe this coming weekend I will make him some kind of treat. I have a great recipe for a chocolate dessert their son loves, but not sure if he likes it. Maybe I could make it if I find pumpkin pudding. Any ideas?
I am glad J-P is enjoying his new client LOL. It would be so nice to go up to a cabin to go snowboarding. I think myself I'd just go for a walk and stay in the cabin afterward LOL.
Good luck with your client. I know things will go smoothly for you. Hope the ankle holds out!!

Crazy busy day today. Have laundry to put away, rooms to clean and a birthday party at 2 that we are going to. Have a bunch of cheese in my refrigerator so I'm making a cheese tray to take with us since I'm not eating it now.

Really missing that extra hour of sleep...

Scale is standing at 169, but I feel thinner, weird.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Cindy, I know what you mean about the cheese. That is a major downfall for me since I gave up my sugar and peanut butter cups!! But I am finding now that I am not missing that stuff at all. It's really weird.
Since I have been doing the enema, my weight is holding down around 161-165. I was stuck between 169-172 for about 3 weeks. It was so frustrating!!
I have noticed that the top portion of my belly is starting to deflate. It is getting where I can tell there are abs there. They aren't defined, but you can tell.
I bought one of those exercise things I call lazy susans (LOL) that you stand on and spin side to side. It has the bands with it. I want to try it some time today. I figure I can do that while I watch the morning news for 15 minutes.
I think we are all finding our comfortable WOE. It's really strange. Almost like we are all doing the same thing, but different ways of doing it. :woohoo:
I am just so glad we all are still together!!! Now, I just need to get the ambition to go to work. I am just so beat today!!

Good morning everyone!
Enjoying your coffee? :) Yikes!
I know prepping for a colonoscopy is cleansing, but I never felt any different afterwards. Just after fasting for a day I was STARVING and couldn't wait to eat after the test. Maybe I'm missing the caffeine effect :confused3.

Robin - Yay for you and your dating! What happened to the preacher? Not for you? Did you and Ken have a talk? I hope you enjoyed your early evening home yesterday.

We had rain and wind yesterday that was unbelievable. My lights dimmed twice, but the power stayed on.

I have to say that I think I am getting depressed about not working. This last rejection really did me in. There are so few jobs now to apply to and the competition is fierce. There are so many people out of work. I'm 50 years old and alot of hiring managers are in their 30's and would consider me old. Can you imagine? In the past 10 months I've applied to over 75 jobs and only have had 2 interviews. 2 interviews!! I have never experienced anything like this. You would think being an admin. asst. I could easily get a job anywhere. When my son was a baby I would 'temp'. Call the agency and go to work the next Monday. Those days are gone. The first thing I did when I knew I was losing my job was call the agency I always used and they said they weren't accepting applications. I knew I was going to be in trouble right then. I know something will break eventually - it's just getting really frustrating and sad. With unemployment and my savings I can make it for another year, but I hope I don't have to wipe myself out and have to start saving from zero. Sorry for being a bummer. Just feel blue today.

Diane, you slipped in while I was typing LOL.
I know what you mean about work. We are in the same boat. Mike didn't get into the local union, so we are just biding time. I am thankful that I am still working as much as I am. It is so hard to keep positive. Mike has been laid off for a little more than a year now. I guess they just signed that you can get unemployment for another year. But like you, we are starting to be careful. Thankfully we have the savings, but we don't want to tap into that. I say all the unemployed/laid off people get together and go to Washington, and Wall Street and just take over all those jobs.
I will continue to pray for you. I wish I could do more. Just really stinks. And the people with money that could help, don't want to. UGGGGG!
Vent all you like. That is what we are here for. The good, the bad and the ugly LOL.

Diane - I'm so hard to hear you are feeling blue. It's very hard out there these days. You gotta remember better days are coming and God has a plan. Maybe he just wants you to rest right now. Trust in Him and he'll guide you on your path. I'm one of those people who believe there is a reason for everything and right now you may not know why you are going through this...maybe it's so you would rely on God a little more and trust that you are going to be doing something Grand when you do get back to work!

Don't ever think you are a bummer! Isn't that why we are all out here? To support one another? Just come out here and we'll try to make you feel better. Maybe you need to go have a cup of black coffee...:scared1:

I love you guys! Just got tears in my eyes from Cindy's post and sittin' here lovin' my friends, who are a very great blessing. Uplifiting each other is what it's all about. We're like one of those parachutes they use for kiddie gym - floating up and floating down, but someone always has the other side to pull you back up when you're down.

Diane, they're not allowed to ask your age. Go get one of those free make-overs at the department store and put those 30 year olds to shame! Your perfect job is coming soon.

Thanks Kathy - that's a lovely song. I'll pray for Mike too! What kind of union is it? My son (& ex-husband) are in the Plumbers Union Local 1 in NYC.

Lisa - My resume shows the years of work experience beginning in 1981. So although they can't ask outright, it's obvious. I asked the woman at the Labor Dept. if I should drop the job that was from '81 - '86 and she said no. She did say that on my last job, as parish administrator for a church for 11-1/2 years, to leave out any church-specific references. For instance, instead of saying 'parish' say 'organization' and instead of 'vestry' say 'board'. The Labor Dept. designated me as a 'profiled dislocated worker' because of the type of place I worked and the length of time I was there.

Cindy - Thanks for the kind words. (& funny ones too :cutie:) It's funny that the last 11 1/2 years of my life were dedicated to the work of the Lord and it led me to this. Talk about being tested! :headache:

You're very welcome for the song. Sometimes when I get upset or just plain in a hurry, I will listen to it. I don't know if you're familiar with 80's rock, but there is a song "Patience" by Guns N Roses. I love that song. Brings a quiet calm peace to me.

The job was for Heavy Equipments Operators. He used to be in the industrial painting union before he got his paint poisoning, and they just let him out to dry so to speak when his comp ran out about 7 years ago. He used to paint the high electrical power line towers. He then went to a different painters union, for dry walling, painting. They never set him out for work. So after keeping his books current for the last 18 years, he said heck with them. We know there is something just around the corner. We just need to trust I guess. It's really hard to do that when you have bills coming in, and you know unemployment could run out soon. His latest extension will be up about the 3rd week of April. It is what it is I guess :confused3

Here you go :)

Diane: Never be ashamed of your experience. It will be very valuable to the right people. I think there's a lot of benefit to age and experience. You're not likely to run off and change your mind to find yourself, lol!

Lisa - I wasn't ashamed of my experience. It's just that since it was so long ago, I really date myself. Keep your fingers crossed that the hiring person is at least 40 :rotfl:.

Kathy - That's terrible that he had paint poisoning! Are there any lingering side effects?

My new 'boss' is more than 10 years younger than I. He's a great guy. One field where it pays to be 'old' is real estate. People want someone that looks like they know what they are doing - i.e: experienced. That's what I was trying to say, albeit awkwardly, lol! Sometimes crows feet are a benefit.;) I'm still getting my face lazered in a couple of weeks, though!

Unfortunately yes. He gets really bad headaches. They are really hard to describe, but when he gets one, he can hardly function. He has suffered from short term memory loss, which is why I try not to get upset if I ask him to do something and he forgets to do it. He honestly doesn't remember me asking. His neurological system is completely messed up. One side of his body could be sweating and the other could be cold, or even the top half of him sweating and the lower part of the body gets really cold. He will have this for the rest of his life. There is a very good probability that he will have MS because of it. We just thank God he is alive and able to function as well as he does. He had no sense of taste or smell for about 10 years. When he got his gallbladder out, it came back, but he can't tell what it is he is smelling, tasting. He can only tell, berry, fruit, vege, etc. He still doesn't have much stomach sensation. He can't feel when he's hungry. If I don't mention to him to eat, he will go for days without eating, and not realize it.
My ultimate goal is for him to do a heavy metal detox. I know it won't reverse everything, but I would feel a lot better if he did. I know he would be open to it, but he needs to get rid of his junk food, salt, and sugar binges first. I am slowly working on that LOL. He has a great metabolism, so he can eat whatever he wants, and it doesn't affect his weight. He can drop 10# at the drop of a hat.

Hi guys. I am up, although I'd prefer to stay in bed. I hate waking up to darkness!! I laid in bed for 1/2 an hour! I just didn't want to get up!! Not feeling too tired, went to bed around 9.
Lisa, I had nachos last night. I found some blue ones. I still prefer the yellow corn, but hey, they were nachos LOL. No ill effects this morning.
I have an OB appt. today. I am going to see if he will run my thyroid and adrenal tests. I trust him more than my PCP. I've known him over 1/2 my life LOL.
Ok, have to dress and take Carrie to school. I'll catch up later guys.
Have a great day. Still cloudy and rainy here, but at least it's around 40*!!!
Oh, before I forget, my hyacenths(sp), Easter lillies, tulips, and other spring flowers are breaking through the ground! All that under about 6' of snow!! I was so excited to see them yesterday. SPRING IS HERE!!!!

Kate: You said it better. That's what I meant about inaccurate. What I really meant was that the doctors aren't informed on how to read the test results according to the current research. They also don't always test for T3 AND T4 functions.

Can you give Robin some of your extra thyroid??

I wish I could give her some of my extra thyroid! I am back on medication to suppress mine. They should also test "Free" T3 and Free T4. Even my endocronologist doesn't order these. That is why I let my naturopathic doctor give me my lab slip and monitor my thyroid levels. I have blood work done every four weeks. My labs last month - my TSH is practically non-existent..... There is a lot of good information on the internet about hypothyroidism. Mary Shoman has written some very good articles and books.

Diagnosis of Hypothyroidism
The big myth that persists regarding thyroid diagnosis is that an elevated TSH level is always required before a diagnosis of hypothyroidism can be made. Normally, the pituitary gland will secrete TSH in response to a low thyroid hormone level. Thus an elevated TSH level would typically suggest an underactive thyroid.

The traditional tests of thyroid function, the T4 (or total T4), T3-uptake, FTI, 'T7', total T3, and T3-by-RIA tests should be abandoned because they are unreliable as gauges of thyroid function. The most common traditional way to diagnose hypothyroidism is with a TSH that is elevated beyond the normal reference range. For most labs, this is about 4.0 to 4.5. This is thought to reflect the pituitary's sensing of inadequate thyroid hormone levels in the blood which would be consistent with hypothyroidism. There is no question that this will diagnose hypothyroidism, but it is far too insensitive a measure, and the vast majority of patients who have hypothyroidism will be missed.

The clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism are many. Perhaps the most common is fatigue. The skin can become dry, cold, rough and scaly. The hair becomes coarse, brittle and grows slowly or may fall out excessively. There is a sensitivity to cold with feelings of being chilly in rooms of normal temperature. It is difficult for a person to sweat and their perspiration may be decreased or even absent even during heavy exercise and hot weather. Constipation that is resistant to magnesium supplementation and other mild laxatives is also another common symptom. Difficulty in losing weight despite rigid adherence to a low grain diet seems to be a common finding especially in women. Depression and muscle weakness are other common symptoms.

Most patients continue to have classic hypothyroid symptoms because excessive reliance is placed on the TSH. This test is a highly accurate measure of TSH but not of the height of thyroid hormone levels.

The basic problem that traditional medicine has with diagnosing hypothyroidism is the so called "normal range" of TSH is far too high: Many patients with TSH's of greater than 1.5 (not 4.5) have classic symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism.

The alternative to monitor thyroid disease is to use the Free T3 and Free T4 and TSH levels and interpret them with new reference ranges. If one measures the Free T3 and Free T4 levels the only accurate measure of the actual active thyroid hormone levels in the blood, as well as the TSH, one will find out how often a low normal TSH does NOT exclude hypothyroidism. It is relatively common to find the Free T4 and Free T3 hormone levels below normal when TSH is in its normal range, even in the low end of its normal range. When patients with these lab values are treated, one typically finds tremendous improvement in the patient, and a reduction of the classic hypothyroid symptoms.

There are a significant number of individuals who have a TSH below 1.5 but their Free T3 (and possibly the Free T4 as well) will be below normal. These are cases of secondary or tertiary hypothyroidism, so, TSH alone is not an accurate test of all forms of hypothyroidism, only primary hypothyroidism.

Kathy - see if they will do the Free T3 & Free T4 testing. Here is the rest of the article I posted about the need for testing Free T3 & Free T4 (I think it is important because it talks about which medication to use if you are hypothyroid and dosing. It wasn't until I took charge of my thyroid issues did I get the right tests!

Treatment of hypothyroidism
After proper diagnosis of hypothyroidism, the next issue is with what substance to treat.. The traditional approach is to use Synthroid/ Levoxyl/Levothroid (levothyroxine) which is only T4. Natural medicine doctors tend to use Armour thyroid which is a mixture of mono and di-iodothryonine and T3 and T4, the entire range of thyroid hormones.

If the Free T3 level is significantly lower than the Free T4 level, it is next to useless to treat with Synthroid/ Levoxyl/Levothroid (T4) only replacements. If the patient could not muster sufficient T3 from their gland (which produces some T3 directly), then they are certainly not going to convert enough T3 from T4 only. Traditional medicine assumes that preparations like Synthroid which are T4 only converts peripherally in the body to T3 in fairly standard amounts and at fairly standard rates. Unfortunately, clinical experience shows this is not true for the majority of patients. Consistent measuring of both free T3 and free T4 blood levels in hypothyroid patients who are on T4 only therapy will very rapidly dispel this myth. A certain percentage of hypothyroid patients do convert enough T4 to T3 at a sufficient rate for T4 treatment to be adequate as a source of T3; but a substantial proportion of patients require some combination of both exogenous T3 and T4.

Once on hormone replacement, the TSH remains useful until it goes BELOW 0.4. Then one has optimized thyroid function by the TSH yardstick; it then remains to optimize thyroid function by the yardstick of the accurate measures of the 2 thyroid hormones, the Free T4 and Free T3 levels.

So one should use a combination of T4 and T3 which compensates for the inability to convert T4 to T3. This is most frequently done with Armour thyroid. However, Cytomel, which is T3 only, can be used in combination with one of the T4 only preparations. It is important to recognize that T3 should always be prescribed twice daily due to its shorter half life. This is typically after breakfast AND supper for compliance reasons.

Taking the dose at these times overcomes traditional medicine's major objection and resistance to using natural thyroid preparations - its variability in its blood levels. Armour thyroid is desiccated thyroid and has both T3 and T4. Most doctors using Armour thyroid are not aware that Armour thyroid should be used twice daily and NOT once a day. The major reason is that the T3 component has such a short half life and needs to be taken twice daily to achieve consistent blood levels.

Once or twice daily dosing one can then optimize both the T4 and T3 levels, with whatever thyroid preparation is required. This is not possible in most hypothyroid patients with T4 only preparations. It is important to use a preparation with T3 because T3 does 90% of the work of the thyroid in the body. The only exception to pursue optimization of the T3 level without using Armour thyroid is in severe acute cardio-pulmonary conditions, when the metabolic slowing effect of a low FT3 level can actually be life-saving. However, the vast majority of hypothyroid patients do not have acute cardio-pulmonary conditions, such as congestive heart failure.

The most common starting dose for patients with hypothyroidism is Armour thyroid, 90 mg which is cut in half with a razor blade and half is taken after breakfast and the other half after dinner. Taking it after meals also helps to reduce volatility of the blood-level of T3. If the patient has any problem breaking or cutting the pill, they should purchase a pill-cutter at the pharmacy. The TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 are then repeated in one month and the dose is adjusted.

In order to optimize the hormone replacement, the Free T3 and Free T4 should be above the median but below the upper end of the laboratory normal reference range. The goal for healthy young adults would be to have numbers close to the upper part of the range, and for cardiace and/or elderly patients, the numbers should be in the middle of its range. The Free T3 and Free T4 levels should be checked every month and the hormone therapy readjusted until the FT3 and FT4 levels are in the therapeutic range described. A small number of large, overweight, thyroid-resistant women may need 6-8 grains of Armour Thyroid or the equivalent of thyroxine per day (counting 0.1mg of T4 as 1 grain of Armour Thyroid).

If the patient is currently taking Synthroid (thyroxine), their Free T4 level is usually at or above the high end of its normal range and the Free T3 level is below. In this situation, or if a patient is allergic to Armour thyroid or is resistant to taking Armour thyroid, one may then add 5-12.5 mcg Cytomel (pure-T3) after breakfast and supper daily, rather than Armour Thyroid or Thyrolar (synthetic T4/T3 combo). It is important to remember that if the FT4 is being raised by a still-high TSH, the FT4 level will drop some when the TSH drops when adequate T3 is added to the hormone replacement.

Patients need to be warned about the overdosage symptoms which are frequently only temporary during the adaptation stage. The symptoms may include: palpitations, nervousness, feeling hot and sweaty, rapid weight-loss, fine tremor, and clammy skin. There is one exception to the 1.5 level of TSH as the cutoff for treatment. Overweight patients who have classic symptoms of hypothyroidism and have made heroic unsuccessful attempts to lose weight may benefit from thyroid hormone replacement even if their TSH slightly below 1.5 and FT4 and FT3 are not below their normal ranges

Patients who are already on once daily Armour thyroid should split their doses immediately and take half after breakfast and half after dinner. Since the only change will be in the FT3 level, which has a short half-life, the serum FT4 and FT3 levels (and TSH, if indicated) can be measured 48-72 hrs after the splitting of the doses if the patient had been on the hormone for 4-6 weeks before the splitting of the doses. This is because the T4 fraction is the one that takes a number of weeks to build up to its steady-state serum level.

I wish I was asleep too. Yesterday, Brad & I woke up early (Sunday :sad1:). I looked at the clock on my phone and it said 4:30 a.m. Which is when Brad gets up usually so I didn't think much of it except to wish that we didn't always wake up that early. It wasn't until I went into the kitchen for coffee did I realize that my phone had already leaped forward and that as far as my body was concerned, it was really 3:30 a.m.! Needless to say, I was not a happy camper!

Chloe is home! I picked her up at the airport on Saturday. Yesterday was so beautiful outside! We spent the morning at the local farmer's market. We sat outside in the sun when we got home and ate our lunch. We did some shopping in the afternoon. I got two really cute pairs of sandals on sale at Nordstrom. As soon as I have a pedicure (Chloe and I are going Weds), I will take a picture so you can see them.

I checked in with Nell on Facebook. Has anyone heard from Carol?

I forgot to mention that I tried something new! The rice paper wraps - the ones that are almost translucent. I bought them at a local asian market. Last night I sauteed some veggies with tofu and tamari. I wrapped them up in the wrappers and we dipped them in peanut sauce! Yumm! Today, I am going to make some for my lunch with red bell pepper, cucumber, avocado, arugula, sprouts, and tahini. The carb count in the wrappers is minimal and for some reason, it makes eating something that you might eat all of the time (veggies) taste different!

What a great idea! I love Thai wraps like that. My manicurist taught me how to make peanut sauce. We just need to find Hoisun (sp) sauce witout much sugar.
