Geriatric mm warriors (12/30/09)

Yeah, Pam! It's so good to see you! We tape Biggest Loser and watch American Idol on tape as well. We like to fast forward thru the silliness and commercials. I wish Biggest Loser would show us more about how to exercise. I don't really learn much from it, but it's hard not to be engrossed in the people's stories.

I like your tip about the veggie snacks. I need freebies I can go to if needed. Celery is a great one. I like pb, but it's in that dreaded nut category. God forbid, I should eat it plain, lol!

I loved your water recipe! You should post that for us in the recipes - it's really a great one!

I need to keep my hands busy while these boo boo's are healing. My knee is really hurting after therapy today. I think he made me move it too much. I should go back to crocheting some gifts or something like I used to. I want to work on all of our pictures, but that makes me get up and down too much.

Kathy: I'm worried about your throat! That's how this awful respiratory virus started with me and Mom. It really got ahold of us and went into chest colds so do everything you can to kick it now. I will be pulling for you that your immune system is strong enough to not succumb. We can get so sick in hospitals! They are a hotbed of germs.

Tuna melts tonight for this sore girl and hubby. That's all we can manage.

Kathy: Alyssa is lucky to have you to help her, even if she does take advantage of the situation. I sure hope she isn't in for a lifetime of not feeling her best. It's so easy to become resigned to it when you don't know what else to do. You've done a lot of research and can help her. Good for you!:woohoo:

Thank you Lisa. I honestly believe in being part of your own medical treatment. Only you know how you feel, and a doctor may miss something. I just don't want to give her false hopes or make her feel worse with any ideas. I know my appointment tomorrow is for me, but I think I may bring it up to him anyway. I figure she'll be the one to take care of Mike and I when we are old and can't get around LOL.

Thank you once again Lisa LOL. I need to be very careful with this. I need to make sure it's a sore throat and not just allergies. The house I clean the rest of the week is the one that the man has cancer and had the surgery at Thanksgiving. I would never chance giving an illness to him. I'll have to play it by ear. I haven't really taken a vacation so to speak from their house. I have had long weekends though. But she will understand if I'm not feeling well. I think with work and the long hospital days, my immune system got worn down. I didn't even take my vitamins 3 times a day as I usually do. I did manage 2 times though.
Weird thing tonight. I decided to drink some ice water, and needed my night dose of D-Ribose. I'm only doing 1 tsp 3 times a day right now. I put it in my water, and it's completely clear! I always put it in my coffee or tea, never water LOL. I thought it would make it cloudy I guess. Just made me chuckle.

well, they are now changing our nasty weather to Friday afternoon, so doesnt look like Pony will have to work on Saturday! Yay! Nationwide is very concious of employees and the bad weather, so they usually close up shop when driving is bad...that will mean 2 days off in a row for me! As long as we have plenty of legal food I am fine...get ahead on my Bible reading program and do some gabbing here and Im a happy Pony! Not looking forward to hiking through a foot of snow to the barn again, but 12 inches cant be as bad as the 18 we had last time!

Natalie - hope you get here to post, nice chatting with you! Check out all these guys posts on the muffins, they have tons of good ideas for switching them up, and they are so quick and easy!

Kathy and Lisa - I made a couple more muffins, added vanilla and cinnamon to one, used 1/2 flax and 1/2 almond flour, then added the cocoa powder and almond extract to the other...YUM! Way Better than the bland first one I made.

Kathy - I have felt like I was fighting off some sort of cold or flu thing for a couple weeks now...never quite settles in, but kind of hovering there...occasional scratchy throat, bit of nasal congestion...I have been downing my green tea, upped the vit C, and so far so good...EVERYBODY is sick at work, with the weird cold/warm weather patterns and so many sick people in such close proximity. Take care of yourself!

Lisa - Im sure you are right on the small cheats...its not enough to make my L and P freak out, and the occasional changes keep my body guessing and I guess that seems to work for me. Im so determined to make this thing work, no WAY I would revert to donuts and pasta...I remember all too well how lousy that stuff makes me feel! Its great that you havent gained while you have been "down"...Im sure our metabolisms are so confused now, they are hanging out waiting to see what we will do next! LOL, you will be in those 12's in no time! Popcorn...hmmmm, that would be interesting too...maybe you can save that for your next mini-cheat!

Pan - so GREAT to see you back!! The fact that you hardly gained anything must mean that your L and P are functioning better overall now, so get back on the horse and kick it into gear again! Im pretty sure if you do step 1 with a few little cheats like I have been doing, it will probably work fine for you. Like Lisa says, Diane is very strict for the overall masses, but adjusting here and there for the individual seems to work ok, as long as you are in tune with anything that might send you into a craving, or a binge...For some reason, it seems that the winter has made it harder for EVERYONE to stay on plan...she has even addressed it on her blog...harder to get all the water in when its cold, hard to go months and months on plan...especially for those with so much to lose like some of us who want to lose 50 pounds and more...you just dont lose that kind of weight in 8 weeks of step 1 and another couple weeks on step 2...it takes AWHILE, and I think she is addressing that issue too...so many of us want to see QUICK results, that when we dont see big losses, we tend to get disgusted and go off plan....Im finding that a pound a week is the best I can manage, but Im planning on it staying off, so if it takes me another year to get it all off, then so be it! Nothing else ever stayed off before...I could lose 20 pounds quicker, but then it came right back...so its MM for me!

Hi Ladies! So good to be back on Step 1--3rd day today. Felt alittle cravy but I'm getting back in my groove.:cloud9:

Robin--great 'talking' to you over at fb! how much have you lost so far? I know how hard you've been working out which really helps. getting my butt to the gym 3x's a week. can't seem to motivate myself for any more days!

Kathy--so glad you didn't have an accident today. we had warmer weather this morning but tonight that bitter cold is back!

Lisa--you fell, right? that stinks. we have a couple of those arm pedal machines at the gym, Iwas told they're a good workout.

Hi Pam! I actually got Jorge Cruise's latest book and he's got alot of recipes that would be good for step 2. He wants you to eat 15 grams of sugar and 6 servings of carbs (5-20 grams) a day. I hate trying to figure out the perticulars--another reason I was afraid of step 2! (other than worried I was going to stop losing weight)

Gained 5 pounds since the beginning of November, so my 17 pound loss is now 12lbs. thank God I didn't gain it all back! I was telling Robin I need to start making my own lc bread--I bought from online and I was paying $10 a loaf (with shipping). too much money.

I'm still taking Energy Enfusion from Tietelbaum--I'm feeling better. still tired but I've got this motivation I haven['t had in a while. I feel like I'm at the beginning of something really good for me so yay!
Lisa--how did you measure the carbs of the multi with the d-ribose? together they're 8 grams of carbs--I don't know how to get 2 servings of ribose in plus the multi plus try to have alittle carbs throughout the day

I'm going to try to go back and read some old posts to catch up--

Robin, glad you enjoyed your muffins. I think just 1/2 flax makes all the difference. They are just soooo yummy!! I divide all the ingredients up in small snack sized zip lock bags, take my ramekin to work with me, and I have a legal snack!! It only takes a minute to put the stuff in the baggies. I do the butter in one, add the rest of the liquids in another (along with the egg) and dry ingredients in yet another. I mush all the liquid together really well in the zip lock bag while my butter melts in the microwave, then add the dry stuff. So easy!!
Hope your weather doesn't get too nasty. Just saw it a bit ago on the weather channel. Not sure if it's going to make it up here or not. I sure hope not!!
Lisa, I say go for the cheat! You have done so very well this whole time. You will enjoy it for sure. Savor it a bit for the rest of us.
I have decided if I want a cheat, it's going to be a healthy one. I put the rest of my pomegrante seeds in the freezer, and I'll pick up a few fruits. I'll munch on one of those if I feel the need to cheat. Maybe 1/4 of a mushed up banana in my muffin!!
Ok, off to bed everyone. Tomorrow is a new day. Have sweet dreams everyone and God Bless!!
:grouphug:

Natalie: I count my vitamins to be safe and it's a bit of a challenge on Step 1. I didn't take them together on Step 1. Even now, I put my ribose in my afternoon tea. I'm not taking it 3 times a day like I used to. Research Nell did said it doesn't spike our blood sugar, but I figured it was best to try to count it. I am a pretty much 0 carber on Step 1 anyway so I can work it in and then on Step 2 I stay at around 11 - 15 on meals so I can fit in my vitamins. Does that help??

I just did something I've never done before. I sent an email to CBS in support of their decision to run an add by Focus on the Family and featuring Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother. It seems the add is offending women's rights groups because it can be construed to oppose abortion. I guess the mother was advised to have an abortion when she was pregnant with Tim, chose not to, and is glad she didn't. They are very devout Christians and I'm sure will focus on the great blessing this decision was for their family.
I really can't understand why these women's groups would go to all this trouble to oppose something like this. It seems so ludicrous to me. Anyway, I wrote a letter in support of airing this commercial so I guess now I'll have to watch for it to come up on the internet after the game. I'm curious to see how "offensive" it is.

It's so good to hear everyone sharing! I found a nice step two snack this evening. Kashi multi grain crackers. 15 are exactly 22 carbs minus 2 grams of fiber. I had 14 just to be extra safe. I don't count my vitamins and have not had any problems so far, but I try to go slightly under 20 most of the time for an in case buffer.

I agree with your ideas of my friends. I truly think we've made those once in a lifetime kinds of friends locally. It's as if we've all known each other forever. (you guys are unlocally, lol) I call my my friend Brenda my Anam Cara, or spirit sister in old Celtic tradition. I truly think God put us all together.

Well, I'm back to the blackboard. That is actually the name of the online classroom that I have to go to in order to work on my classes. Love all of you! :grouphug:

Carol: I couldn't see why they would oppose it either so I did some reading. It seems that CBS has historically had a policy against running any ads that are called advocacy ads - ads that advocate one stand as opposed to any other. In the past they have denied ads for the ethical treatment of animals, for example. This ad is not likely to offend anyone that I can imagine because of its content. The only worry is that they will begin to pick and chose, running ads that polarize people rather than bringing them together. Personally, I would enjoy this ad more than a beer commercial and I wouldn't chose abortion as a personal choice. I can see where the argument is coming from though, because I also am for the ethical treatment of animals;) From what I am reading, it seems like the ad will air and it's not likely to really cause much of a backlash, which is good. Good for you for airing your views.

Good find, Nell! Kashi is nationally stocked so hopefully we can all find those crackers.

Your new friends are a living example of the adage that you reap what you sew! It was on my vision board for this past year to develop a strong circle of friends. I was concentrating on women friends and look what I got in all of you!

Happy studying, Grasshopper! (Are you old enough to know what that means??)

Good Evening

I am watching Biggest Looser as I type this during the ads. I tried recording it and found it harder to fast forward through the ads than to do something else while it was on!!! I wonder how much of it is choreographed and how much is just as it really happens. It is a bit motivating to see how much people can lose, even if it not the way we would eat. It does get me to the gym, though!!

Speaking of the gym – I have been to several doctors for the back the past couple of weeks and one suggested I go back to the chiropractor and try that again. It seems to be helping so I got carried away on the treadmill!!! I will learn one of these days…….maybe, but I do hate to be slowed down!!

No diet drinks for 3 days…

We are finally getting some rain tonight – we need it, but it is also quite windy and that can cause some problems. The windows are getting washed, though on one side of the building!!

I was given a 1974 Atkins cook book yesterday with a long introduction. The recipes were designed for a lifetime of low carbing as the original Atkins was basically zero carbs to begin with and then start adding in carbs. The insulin connection is the same mantra as MM. There really hasn’t been a lot of change in the thinking over all these years in the low carb world.

Natalie and Pam – nice to see you back.

Hope everyone is safe tomorrow weather-wise as everyone seems to be getting unusual weather. At least January is almost over with so Spring is a bit closer!!!

:grouphug:

Good morning. Well, it's official. I'm sick. Woke up with a sore throat, sneezing, and a huge stuffy head accompanied with a headache. At least I have my check up today at the doctor.
Melanie so good to see you. I have slowly been reading the Dr's book and I did slack off the D-Ribose. Lesson learnt ;) I am back on it, but only 1 tsp 3 times a day right now. My health food store was out of the big bottle and I refuse to buy a bunch of the smaller ones that end up costing much, much more than the bigger bottle will. I was thinking of trying the Energy formula, so I may have to order it now. I am glad you're feeling better.
Nell, good seeing you too. It's so nice when you find your soul sister. I actually have a couple of them. The one, I don't get to talk to much, but when we do call, it's like we talked just yesterday. It was so weird the way we met. She and I both worked at Lowes, and I was going on vacation. I didn't really know her as she was in a different department than me. Anyway, I needed someone to deposit my paycheck into my bank while we were gone. We had gone to CO to visit my sister for 2 weeks. I walked right up to her and asked her if she would do it for me. She said she would, I handed her a deposit slip for my bank, and the rest is history/ As I look back on it, seemed kind of stupid on my part. She could have forged my name and just cashed that check instead. I didn't even know her for heaven's sake! God will make you do things that we think are absolutely insane!! She is such a trust worthy kind person.
Ok, enough rambling for now. I'll catch up with you all later.
Hugs and Love to all of you!!:grouphug:

Thanks Lisa,

I read the same thing and still don't see where they can call this an advocacy add. It is in support of The Family. The fact that she refused an abortion is just part of the story. I know that my church has run adds for years that support the family....I think those women's groups have just gotten more and more self absorbed and self serving. It would be interesting if a vote could be taken by just the women in America and see how many share the values and views of these groups. I'm for equality, but don't feel that it needs to be obtained at the expense of family and the unborn.

Quick check in to let you know I'm still around. I've been somewhat self absorbed with work issues. My hours have been cut to only 24 a week. We're still waiting for the county to come through with some new work. My hard drive burned out so I'm working from another computer at the office that's reallly funky. Speaking of "cheats" :) I've decided, like Robin, that if I'm gonna be on step1 for awhile I'm going to make it more interesting. I've been adding good carbs like sweet potato a couple of times a week. No big junk food trips but a little variety. If it takes awhile to lose the weight, so be it.
The good news with the reduced hours at work is I get to do my water aerobics again two days a week :woohoo: That and gardening once the weather improves will help me get my exercise in. It's so depressing to sit on a recumbent bike in the spare bedroom all my myself. I know, boo-hoo
I'll try to get back more often. This weekend I hope to add some good lc recipes I've tried.

Hugs, Barb

I just found a recipe for nacho chips, or doritos, and have posted it in the recipe forum. I haven't tried them out yet, but plan to maybe later after my nap. Just wanted to let you all know.

Yay, Barb. I'm so glad you're getting to do your aquarobics again. :yay: Not yay about the cut in hours. I hope things will go okay financially without those added hours.

I hear you, Carol. CBS seems to be far behind other networks, which have run ads that could be said to have two sides, as you mention, for years. The good news is that the publicity will only serve to increase awareness so it's a blessing in disguise. I'm sure it is a tasteful and poignant ad. I'll be out that day, but I'm going to see if Tom can record it for me to see. Change is seldom achieved without resistance so perhaps your dreams will come true in this regard before long. I wish someone would try equally as hard to remove ads of a personal nature. I'm frankly sick of hearing all about people's periods and sex lives. I don't even think they had underwear ads when I was a kid, lol!

Barb, we can cheat two times in any week anyway so go for it if it makes it easier for you! The only reason I was so strict with myself is because I wanted to get results faster. I hope work becomes more interesting soon. We love your new recipes!:woohoo:
