Okay,

DS is reading about that area.

I feel stupid but I'm having trouble with clarifying things for him.

Is London the capitol of England or the U.K.?

What things make up the UK?

Please don't laugh. I used to be quite good at geography and my DS is very interested in it.

Can you explain what is what?

I'm sorry, I can't be much help, but...I bet if you posted this over on the UK CB, they would be happy to help.

Debbie

From The Times Atlas of the World: (my copy is a few years old, BTW!) :-
The United Kingdom:
part of the British Isles, is situated off the northwest European coast, separated from France by the English Channel. it includes the countries of England (cap. London) and Scotland (cap. Edinburgh), the principality of Wales (cap. Cardiff), and the region of Northern Ireland (cap. Belfast) in the north of the island of Ireland.
Capital: London
Language: English, Welsh, Gaelic
Religion: Protestant majority, Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu minorities
Currency: pound sterling (GBP)
Hope this helps!

Thank you everyone for the info.

So, it sounds like London is the Capitol of England and the U.K.

Does that sound right?

Looks like Sandra M has answered the question. By the way just a little more info for interest Great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales.
Claire :D

You are always welcome to join us on the UK Community Board if you have any questions regarding UK ........... you are welcome to join us if you don't have any questions either :teeth:

UK Community Board

London is the capital of the United Kingdom - UK comprising of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and as Claire says, Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales ....... Britain being the island containing the three countries that comprise Gt Britain! And Sandra's Times Atlas has it right in all particulars regarding the capital of the four UK countries :) !!

My question is, what actually are Great Britain and the United Kingdom? They seem to be made up of several countries (not the same for each). Is there any similar grouping of countires similar in organization here in the America's (North and/or South) to help me more clearly understand the makeup of the UK and GB? Life can be so confusing at times, LOL.

I very embarrassingly don't know the answer to something I've always wondered:confused: I now know what the difference is in GB and the UK,GB doesn't include Ireland (Did NOT know this until this threda!!).But why UK and Great Britain and why have both names and when would you use one and not the other??

i'm not 100% precent sure but i think its that Great Britian is the name of the island and the UK is related to the ares the government control?

What exactly is England's relationship with the U.K.?

For example, Michigan is a state in the U.S.

How does this compare to what the U.K. is to England?

Does this make sense? I know what I am trying to say in my mind but it's not coming out right as I type.

I thought I learned somewhere that UK refers to all the territories that are governed by England. At one time that would have included Canada and Australia (among other places). Has anyone else ever heard of this, or am I way off?

i thought that was the Biritish Empire

England in a country in the UK

The Isle of Man is also part of the UK (although it has an indendant Government!!)

It is a small island in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland and is a very nice place to visit!!!

i got this from the british high commision web site....is it wrong??

The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not part of the United Kingdom. They are largely self-governing with their own legislative assemblies and systems of law. The British Government is, however, responsible for their defence and international relations.

added extra bit from the Isle of Man guide

Q. Is the Isle of Man part of the UK?
A. No, the Isle of Man is a crown dependency which has its own laws, courts, and government. The Government on the Isle of Man is a parliament called Tynwald. Government

I think the full name of the UK is.......The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (So that would put Great Britain within the UK)

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are countries in their own right, and often compete in sporting events separately eg football, rugby etc.

Within each country there are counties (a bit like states).

For example, I live in Bexleyheath, Kent, England. Bexleyheath is a town, Kent is a county and England a country.

So I guess I'm English and British and a UK'er!! :)

Yes you are correct. The full title for the U.K is The United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. London is therefore the capital of England, G.B and the UK.
As the previous poster said England, Scotland and Wales are seperate countries within their own right with counties much like states in the US. However in the UK the counties do not have their own laws etc.

I live in the Isle of Man and I have a British passport, issued from the passport office, Douglas, Isle of Man.

The IOM although has an independant Government (of sorts!!) but is Governed by the a representative of the Queen of England.

Makes me part of Great Britain and Northern Ireland but not strictly the United Kingdom.

It is a fantastic place

Well, now I am getting REALLY confused, LOL. I just tell people I live in Chicago. :teeth:
