I am hope to get some help from my fellow disboard members...

I am moving to PA next month and while visiting this area this weekend, was looking around for a grocery store. The nearest one to our new house is Genuardis. I have never heard of them and was wondering what others thought about them? Are prices good? What about quality?

Not as close but still around the area, I saw an Acme and Giant. I have not had experience with any of the these either. So, all feedback will be appreciated.

Genaurdis is the most expensive. Acme has a great selection, great produce, and they have a coupon book in their stores every month that has good deals. Giant is overall the cheapest but not the best in the produce department. I personally switch between Acme and Giant.

By the way, I live in Bucks County, Pa. Lived here most of my life. Im 30 minutes north of Philadelphia. Where are you moving to?

Genuardis has good loss leaders, but is expensive overall. Not a fan of Acme, try to never shop there b/c I don't like their games or prices. Giant is decent pricewise, and Redners is even cheaper, but without any frills. But Wegmans is my most fav, they are building a lot in SE PA.

Btw, Genuardis is a Safeway chain, it was local but they bought them out years ago.

Uhm...are you moving to my neighborhood? You just described my grocery store options exactly. PM me if you don't want to say exactly where...but I will give you the lowdown on each store.

I was gonna say this too! lol! Maybe we all live in the same neighborhood!

I lived in Chester County for a few years and still go there often. I wish it had a Wegmans... I hear such great things. I have to agree with everyone else. Genuardi's is expensive. Join the 'saver club' or whatever the deal is at each of stores. The produce and meats I found to be about the same as elsewhere. They usually tend to have a nice salad bar and sandwich area for lunch. Keeps me out of Mcdonalds or Wendys!

There is a genaurdis less than a mile from my work so me and my coworkers often go there for lunch. LOVE their salad bar but I HATE the price at $5.49/lb!

There are Wegmans in Downingtown and Malvern in Chester County, right off 202. There is also a Wegmans in Collegeville off 422 in Montgomery County and a new one is coming to King of Prussia soon.

We're moving to Bucks County. I believe the area is Buckingham?! I would love to hear about your opinions about the stores in the area.

To break it down...

Genaurdi's is part of the Safeway chain, and shares much in common with their corporate cousin

Acme is part of the nationwide Supervalu chain (think Albertson's), like Genaurdi's, Acme is a lot like other Supervalu markets

Giant (of Carlisle) is owned by Royal Ahold of the Netherlands, but shares very little in common with the similarly-named Giant chain operating around the D.C. area (which is also an Ahold store)

Chester Co chiming in. :) ITA, Genuardi's is the most expensive. They don't have a great selection. I'm a Giant shopper, I think their sales are the best, best selection, and all-around prices. Wegman's is a very nice store, but on some things their prices are pretty high, but you can find a lot of specialty items that you really can't get elsewhere like a whole entire cheese counter, an olive bar, and a vegan/vegetarian/health food section. Wegmans has the best fruit, and some (all?) Wegmans carry beer including a great selection of specialty beers. (I'm like a kid in a candy store in the beer section, lol.) Acme is almost as expensive as Genuardi's and has a slightly better selection.

I would say I do 90% of my shopping at Giant and 5% at Target and 5% at Wegmans.

Buckingham is ONE town over from us! We are in Doylestown! Hello neighbor! :cool1:

We have a Wegmans that is 10-15 minutes away. Its on 611 in Warrington. I like going there for the takeout imported beer :thumbsup2

Your closest store other than Genaurdis is the Acme in Doylestown. I LOVE that Acme! It has the best produce! But of course the BEST is Wegmans, but its just a little further.

ANY HELP YOU NEED with the area... please feel free to PM me! It is very cool to find someone in my town on such a public board!

I can literally walk to the Genuardi's but will drive 20 minutes to Wegmans because I find Genuardi so expensive and honestly I find a TON of expired food items in their dairy section. I will stop there but a 5 minute run in run out turns into half an hour because I have to inspect everything so much!
The Wegmans in Warrington (not far from where you will be) is fantastic. I only wish we had one closer to us!

Welcome to Bucks County!!! :goodvibes

Thank you for all of the feedback. We don't have any of these chains in South Florida, so I didn't have a clue what to think about any of them.

Genardis = Publix
Acme = Winn Dixie
Giant = Piggy Wiggly or Grand Union (the cheapest of the set and the only you want to visit the most.

Jump onto Walmarts website and see if there is a super walmart near to where you are moving. They will be the cheapest of the lot. Good luck with your move, bring a snow shovel...

LOL about the snow shovel comment! Yes, coming from Florida...! We are getting pounded right now and its expected to be over 14 inches of snow by 3 am!

I know many people say Wegmans is expensive, but honestly their store brands are cheaper than my previous cheapest (Redners). I've compared many items (oatmeal, cat food, bird seed, apple sauce, tomato sauce, spaghetti, butter, flour, etc.) and Wegmans usually comes out ahead. I recently stocked up at Target for infrequent stuff (bathroom paper cups, chocolate milk, just to name a few) and those things were also cheaper at Wegmans--found out after I had already shopped at Target.

Yes, their produce and meats can run a few bucks, but I usually buy their soon to expire meat and save that way. I've been doing the no-buy thread for months now, so you know I'm trying to save money. Just FYI in case anyone is on the fence about Wegmans. Plus, the atmosphere and customer service cannot be beat.We eat there for dinners out instead of restaurants, it's that nice!

I grew up around Buckingham. We now live about 20min away from there. Wegmans in Warrington is the best supermarket around! Worth the drive IMO. Genuari's used to be great before they were bought by Safeway. The used to be a family owned supermarket.

Enjoy your new home! Buckingham is a beautiful area. Be sure to check out Peddler's Village and Doylestown (they have a great farmer's market).

I totally agree! We live in Upper Bucks Co., so we use the Allentown Wegman's much more often, but the Warrington one is bigger and very nice.

Giant has 2 stores on either side of us that are less than 10 mins away, so I do shop there sometimes, but I travel an extra 10 mins. to shop Wegman's when I can.

I find Giant to be expensive for the quality. I do as well or better pricewise at Wegman's and the quality of produce and meat is much better.

OP, you may want to add Target to the mix, as I understand they remodeled all of their Philadelphia area stores to carry an expanded fresh grocery section (which would serve well for fill-in shopping trips).
