General Star Wars Discussion

I do agree, but my larger point is if you watch even a few minutes of that example above- anyone can see how much better they are at for example Luke-than Disney has done.

I don't want the "live action" Maul to be an AI creation- but am afraid it will be since it will probably look more like the original (at least if Disney hires help from the internet folks) to help anyway.
Well Luke is now a character 42 years removed from the OT. The time to have continued the Luke story was in the late 80s and 90s. Now it's either deep fakes or AI. But frankly, I don't need fill in the blanks storytelling about Luke but if I did, the single best way to rehash Luke between the stories is like Maul, an animated version. I have no desire to watch AI generated fan fiction.

So, as someone who has written a lot of fan fiction in my life, I'll answer this. It's fun. It's a hobby. And for me, it was a way to practice writing with a story and characters I knew and loved. I loved to write and had these stories in my head and needed to get them out. It was fun writing and posting stories, and I met a lot of friends in the process. Eventually, I did write original fiction, but guess what? It wasn't nearly as fun as writing fanfic. :D

Also, count me in as someone against using generative AI in any kind of storytelling. The whole fun of creating is creating.

Well, fan fiction is one thing - it doesn't cost anything to produce. Elaborate fan productions in live action though surely take a lot of resources. I guess if that's what you want to spend your money on, but I don't really get it. I suppose this AI slop doesn't actually cost that much, but that's a different issue.

That is a subjective opinion and depending on how you see and feel about Luke Skywalker you might be somewhat biased that they are "better".

I am not a Luke fan.... I prefer other characters, but if you do love Luke then great for you. I am of the camp who believes that Star Wars and the 'Force' is bigger than one person, no matter how cool or awesome that person is... so I might be less impressed by someone's fan creation about Luke.. than someone else who really loves Luke and is getting a story they really wanted to see.

I would not go to see an AI live action... even about Maul.... because that is not live action. it is just animation in another form..... and if I wanted animation Maul I can watch CLone Wars/Rebels and happily go see ShadowLord.

I do not think Disney will throw away animation for AI completely. I do think they will find ways to use it... I just hope not at the expense of writers and artists and actors.

Can be any character, doesn't have to be Luke. I only used Luke because that's who is in this video.
But it would have to somebody that has passed, or is too old to play themselves younger.
The comparison of the AI of Luke to what Disney has done, and this is better by far.

Great... I am happy for you that you enjoy it.

Again, not the point in the least. It wasn’t meant to Luke only, hence the "ex" in my post, but how much better they are.

Any time any movie, SW or otherwise has even a flashback, my guess is the face will be AI, and done by the right people.

Agreed. That's what I've been wondering going forward.

Since live action already incorporates AI faces, my guess is it will be used more and more, esp for any flashbacks.

I've never really understood the "fan film" thing, AI or not. Some of them are really well done but I think, why put all that effort into creating something that you can't own or profit from?
As others have said, because it's fun. Not everything has to be about profit and making money. I've written fan-fiction (which is basically in the same category as a fan film). I've let friends and family read my stories. The copyright holders are not going to seize my computer and/or make me delete the stories, because I never try to make money from them. It's just something I do for fun.

It's fine if you don't understand why people want to spend money on something. There are plenty of things other people spend money on that I don't understand/get. To answer the question why people spend money on it; because it's fun, it's enjoyable, it brings them pleasure, and they aren't doing it to turn a profit.

I think we are talking about different things...or different levels of AI use.

Yep very happy to see the high quality, especially for future movies and D+ improvements.

it is one thing to de-age a face for a brief flashback... I do not care about that. it is another thing entirely in my view to allow a computer to create a total AI movie or show that do not use real actors, artists, and writers in any capacity, and instead allows the computer to create the content. I am not interested in that level of AI. Bad CGI is already painful to watch.... and I cannot imagine that bad AI is any different.

Essentially I do not support replacing human artistry with computer algorithms. I question the ethics especially when people's likeness or characters are used without their implicit consent, to me that is a form of plagiarism.

Agreed. There's currently an AI generated short showing what happened to Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen when the Empire came for the droids. It has both actors likenesses fully acting out a 3 minute scene. Are the estates of Phil Brown and Shelagh Fraser getting any sort of benefit for these works? Any of the ad revenue or revenue generation that YouTube or other platforms give the creators of these works? I highly doubt it.
