General Star Wars Discussion

Honestly, Star Wars movies are basically live action cartoons anyway. As I often say, the movies are for 8 year olds!
I do think they are expanding on that a bit.... still making stuff towards kids (Skeleton Crew) but also more adult (Andor).

sometimes you see stuff on social media and you know it is so fake... then other times you see stuff and hope hope hope it is real

Speaking of projects geared to an older audience.. I have seen reference to a horror Star Wars series/project, now that would be fun.

I also am not a huge animation watcher, but I agree. These were top notch.
Saw your post this morning....and then spent next couple hours watching those 4 final episodes of Clone Wars, and the last 2 of Ahsoka's Jedi story....they are SO, so very good. Until Andor, the animated stories had some of the darkest, deadliest SW content.

I'm choosing to focus on the "definitely happening" category as I have had my fill of rumored movies that never come to fruition! I will probably go see Mando & Grogu and Starfighter.

What I'm most looking forward to, though, is the Rey & Leia novel coming out this summer!

So hard to know where its all headed. Folks on the internet are getting better than Disney at SW AI. Luke does entire short stories now.

I have to believe one of the things the new CEO will be pushing is AI content on D+. SW is good place to use AI, because you noted, fans are using AI to create content on the YouTube.

Star Wars has had artificial intelligence since the very beginning - R2-D2 & C-3PO! 😁

Yuck. I would not be excited for AI everything. That would be one way to turn me off new content. I also dont do You Tube really so not on my radar.

I would also expect those rogue SW content creators to be held to copyright eventually....

I've never really understood the "fan film" thing, AI or not. Some of them are really well done but I think, why put all that effort into creating something that you can't own or profit from? If some of them instead created something original, it could be very successful.

See article from The Wrap (which is a trade mag and something I would consider a better source than others -- although I believe Variety and Hollywood Reporter have better sourcing than The Wrap, IMO).

https://www.thewrap.com/dana-walden-disney-openai-deal-characters-creatives/

I watched the ABC interview with David Muir and Iger & D'Amaro and D'Amaro commented about people at TWDC and CMs are what is most important. Actually, as CEO and with Dana Walden as CCO, what is more important than people is AI.

Sad.

Not once in the ABC interview did I hear D'Amaro talk about the most important thing about TWDC, its movies, its parks, etc. . . . story telling.

Again, sad.

so if I understood the article correctly.... TWDC has partnered to provided some characters for people to be able to use in a limited capacity to create short content using some app called Sora?

That does not bother me. that random fans are using an APP to create shorts for Tik Tok (which I also do not use) as much as I do not want to see AI generated content replacing the artists and writers who are creating stories, movies or animation for TWDC and SW.

So, as someone who has written a lot of fan fiction in my life, I'll answer this. It's fun. It's a hobby. And for me, it was a way to practice writing with a story and characters I knew and loved. I loved to write and had these stories in my head and needed to get them out. It was fun writing and posting stories, and I met a lot of friends in the process. Eventually, I did write original fiction, but guess what? It wasn't nearly as fun as writing fanfic. :D

Also, count me in as someone against using generative AI in any kind of storytelling. The whole fun of creating is creating.

Where do you think stories come from?

I do agree, but my larger point is if you watch even a few minutes of that example above- anyone can see how much better they are at for example Luke-than Disney has done.

I don't want the "live action" Maul to be an AI creation- but am afraid it will be since it will probably look more like the original (at least if Disney hires help from the internet folks) to help anyway.

That is a subjective opinion and depending on how you see and feel about Luke Skywalker you might be somewhat biased that they are "better".

I am not a Luke fan.... I prefer other characters, but if you do love Luke then great for you. I am of the camp who believes that Star Wars and the 'Force' is bigger than one person, no matter how cool or awesome that person is... so I might be less impressed by someone's fan creation about Luke.. than someone else who really loves Luke and is getting a story they really wanted to see.

I would not go to see an AI live action... even about Maul.... because that is not live action. it is just animation in another form..... and if I wanted animation Maul I can watch CLone Wars/Rebels and happily go see ShadowLord.

I do not think Disney will throw away animation for AI completely. I do think they will find ways to use it... I just hope not at the expense of writers and artists and actors.
