Aka, Star Wars's modus operandi.

The thing is, that groundwork has been around for a long, long time. The movies though didn't set it up nor explain it. All it needed were a couple of lines from Snoke or someone about "Project Necromancer" or something in VII or VIII. This is why I am a proponent of new Special Editions for all of the films. Just adding a tiny bit of gap-filler would smooth things out.

Now, personally, it doesn't bother me that much when Star Wars doesn't make sense - it never really has. Still, it would go a long way to quelling a lot of the complaints.
