General Ignorance UPDATE Post 41

i don't think that not knowing trivial facts that really aren't important is considered ignorance..

I think it depends on the kind of trivial fact. If it's something pretty basic like "Whats the capital of Germany" etc, then I think you should know that. But saying that I always get my capitals mixed up :)

i don't think that not knowing trivial facts that really aren't important is considered ignorance..

I called the thread General Ignorance because it's based off a part in a TV Show called QI plus i'm getting the questions from a book called the Book of General Ignorance which are questions from the show...

I'll get some new questions up tomorrow. Cinderella, Planets and others :-D

Here we go! I'm probably gonna post 1 or 2 every few days :)

11. What were Cinderella's slippers made from?

11.
WRONG ANSWER - Glass
RIGHT ANSWER - Squirrel Fur
REASON - Charles Perrault, who wrote the familiar version of the story in the 17th Century, misheard the word vair (squirrel fur) for the similar sounding verre (glass). There are over 340 other versions of the story. None of these versions mention glass slippers. In the 'original' Chinese story 'Yeh-Shen' they're made of gold thread with solid gold soles. In the Scottish version 'Rashie-Coat' they're made of rushes. In the medieval French tale that Perrault adapted, her shoes were described as pantoufles de vair - slippers of squirrel fur.As well as adding new things to the story (the mice, the pumpkin and the Fairy Godmother) he also reduced their peasant bloodthirstiness. In the original, the ugly sisters cut off their toes and bunions to try on the slipper, and after the Prince marries Cinderella, the King takes revenge on them and the Wicked Stepmother by forcing them to dance themselves to death wearing red hot iron boots. Much of this was later reinstated by the Brothers Grimm.

I just don't think 'squirrel fur slippers' have quite the same enchanted ring to it. ;)

NEW QUESTION! Made this one easier for you guys. If you get this wrong, SHUN!!!

12. How many planets are there in the solar system?

12.
WRONG ANSWER - 9
RIGHT ANSWER - 8 or 80,000
REASON - On 24th August 2006, the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union finally agreed it's definition of a planet. Planets must fulfil 3 criteria:
*They have to orbit the Sun.
*They must have enough mass to be spherical
* The have to of 'cleared the neighbourhood' around their orbit.
Pluto only managed the first 2 so was demoted to the status of 'dwarf planet'. some astronomers argue that Earth, Jupiter and Neptune haven't cleared their orbits either, but it does resolve the anomalous position of Pluto. Pluto is alot smaller then all the other planets, a 1/5 of the mass of the Moon and smaller then 7 of the moons of other planets. It's barely larger then it's own moon Charon. It's orbit is eccentric and on a different plane from other planets. It's even made from a completely different composition. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are medium sized and rocky. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gas giants. Pluto is a tiny ball of ice, one of at least 60,000 other comet-like objects forming the Kuiper belt right on the edge of the Solar System. All these planetoid objects are known collectively as minor planets. There are 361, 670 of them already registered, around 5000 new ones are discovered each month. One of them discovered in 2005 called Eris, is actaually larger then Pluto. Others such as Sedna, Orcus and Quaoar, aren't far off. Now Pluto, Eris and Ceres - the largest body in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter - have been officially adopted as the first 3 dwarf planets.

Is that really right though?
I could've SWORN I heard on the news the other day there were now 11 planets.
A girl came up with a new..uhm...brain fart I can't remember the word.

But ya know, My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto.

Now I cant sing the song D:

Mercury Venus Earth and Mars!
Jupiter, Saturn with its rings,
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto!!
These are all the plannettts

NOO
YOU CANT TAKE OUT PLUTO

Yes!
Techincally that's wrong because it doesn't state regular planets seperate from dwarf planets.

The solar system has 8 planets, but also includes the 3 dwarf planets Ceres,Pluto, and Eris.

haha i can honestly say i got all of the last one right...(im just going to leave out the fact that there was only one)

Interplanet Janet:

She's been to the sun, it's a lot of fun
it's a hot spot; it's a gas
Hydrogen and helium
in a big bright glowing mass

It's a star
It's a star
So Janet got an autograph
Uh-huh

Mercury was near the sun so Janet stopped by
but the mercury on Mercury was much too high
so, Janet split for Venus, but on Venus she found
She couldn't see a thing for all the clouds around

Earth looked exciting - kinda green and inviting
So Janet thought she'd give it a go
But the creatures on that planet looked so very weird to Janet
She didn't even dare to say hello

It's a bird
It's a plane
Why it must be a UFO
But it was...

[Chorus - ignore this :D]

Mars is red and Jupiter's big
and Saturn shows off it's rings
Uranus is built on a funny tilt
And Neptune is its twin

And pluto little pluto is the farthest planet from the sun.

[END SONG]

I thought of that when I saw this. Thought I'd share an easy way to remember the planets. If you want to listen to the song, click here

And by the way, I'm not a freak for knowing this song. I had to do it for the play. :D

NEW QUESTION!

13. Who invented champagne?

13.
WRONG ANSWER - The French
RIGHT ANSWER - The English
REASON - The English developed a taste for fizzy wine in the 16th century, importing barrels of green, flat wine from Champagne and adding sugar and molasses to start it fermenting. They also developed the strong coal-fired glass bottles and corks to contain it. As the records of the Royal Society show, what is now called méthode champenoise was first written down in England in 1662. The French were the ones who perfected the modern dry style in 1876 and even then, it was for export to England. The Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon did not invent champagne but spent most of his life trying to remove the bubbles.

Man.
I didn't get any of these right.
I'm stupid.
