General chit chat thread.

Oh I totally agree....it is being blown out of all proportion, newspapers aren't helping when printing stories like 65,000 will die of it.

Next thing you know the government will be putting taxes up because of it.

Getting fed up with all the doom and gloom in the papers & tv,
I for one would like to hear some happy news for a change:)

I couldn't agree more. I've read that ordinary flu kills 500.000 people worldwide every year and that TB killed 1.9 million people last year. The media is making us all feel very afraid. It may mutate, but I think all viruses have the potential to do that, don't they? I don't want to catch Swine Flu, but I'm sure that the majority of people who get it will make a full recovery.

Don't you feel that we only get fed one news item at a time and then every channel carries the same story?

We had weeks of "The Recession" and nothing else.
Followed by a few days of "Blizzards!"
Then a bit of "Swine Flu - kills millions in South America!"
Then weeks of "MP Expenses"
A couple of weeks of "Michael Jackson - death of a genius"
and now we're back to "Swine Flu killing masses in UK."

I get so cross that all other news stories get pushed to the last 5 minutes of the news programmes. I try to listen to Radio 4 news but that can be nearly as bad.

It gets me mad too because they sort of put a spin on it as well. Last night they shown some graph comparing Dec flu and July flu and the massive notification of reporting of having flu increase in July. Obviously everyone is worried about it and are off to the doctors or ringing NHS Direct, etc because of the media talking about it. Normally most people will just get on with it if they have flu and only go to the doctors if they have infections which the graph didn't take into account at all. It makes people more scared than they need to be.

That is a good point.:)

That is very true Bev, usually you'd just buy a box of flu tablets over the counter.

I have stopped watching the news lately it's just so depressing & I agree with Libby that they only seem to cover one story over & over again..... I am sure the government are quite relieved at the moment as it's certainly taken the spotlight off of them for the time being.

The media are making so much out of how many people have swine flu symptoms but it doesn't mean they have it, someone I know has been ill all week with very bad flu, she was given tamiflu and told it was most likely swine flu, well she just got the test results back and it wasn't. So I wonder how many of the people ringing the helplines etc actually have it :confused3

P.s still hiding under the bed just in case though

Evening everyone, I'm completely stuck over what to get Ebony for her birthday. she is going to be 5 in august, 2 days after we get back from our holidays, so i need to get something this weekend. I just don't know what. She would like a ds lite but thought I would give her that for xmas. Her brothers weren't allowed one till they were sick and Liam remembers that and thinks its unfair if she gets one at 5 :rotfl2:.

Anyone have any ideas

That's a tough one......has she got a bike?

Is she a performer? What about a microphone set or a little karaoke machine? One of our best buys was a pink cd player. The Best Disney Album in the World is the most played cd! Dressing up clothes? DVD's always go down well with mine. A cheap post office set went down well too. A play china tea-set or a hairdressing kit, complete with mini hair-dryer? Another huge hit with my 5 year old is her HSM dance mat.

She has a bike, she might like a dance mat. I asked her earlier what she might like and she said " a birthday pressent".

Have a fab day Claire. Can we see some piccies later?
