Hi, this is actually Alanapapa, Caropooh's DH.
The "Removal" of cousins is how many generations different from you. Your 1st Cousin's child would be your 1st Cousin once removed. The numbering system of cousins is how many generations to a common ancestor. Your 1st cousins share a set of grandparents with you, 2nd cousins share great-grandparents. This sometimes gets confusing when you have a large span of years within a generation. My oldest half-sister just became a grandmother and her granddaughters are my DD's 1st cousin once removed, even though they are 5 years apart in age.
